Title: Any Metal Guitarists in here?
Post by: Thong Maniac on January 07, 2015, 06:32:53 AM
Im pretty new to playing, but i think I need an upgrade on my electric guitar. The lower strings rattle and sound pretty cheap

I still have an old Samick junker from when i was like 13. Want to upgrade but not sure what i should be spending? I want to get a good one for metal type playing, something i can palm mute on easily, etc. Do i need to concern myself with active vs passive pick ups?

Been looking at Ibanez guitars in the 200-400 dollar range

Experience level : i can play power chords and basic chord change ups, still learning strumming techniques as i think this is actually the hardest.

An ibanez in the price range you mentioned or a little more would be a good fit for what you describe.

Ibanez are decent in that range like you mentioned. (I have a Ibanez bass and guitar, both around 300.00 and very good instruments).
For any tips, please PM YngwieRhoades or Marty Champions... Both epic players...

the metal phase will give him a nice foundation in theory.   If he eventually ends up playing Tom Petty songs in a biker bar for $135 a night, being able to move from major to minor and doing some decent little guitar runs will serve him well.  I grew up with Vinnie Moore tab videos, I still use it all the time while playing Natalie Imbruglia, acoustic looping with leads, in the naples marriott lobby.

Ibanez is fine for those goals... but make your 2nd guitar a Parker Fly.

1. All guitars under 600$ are crap in different ways, so try to find used one which fit in your price range. I have never seen guitar which is a. cheap b. good c. stays in tune d. playable.

2. Upgrading is for those who know what they are doing, because you need to know what parts to change, how and WHY. Furthermore, if you want to change pickups, you need to know how to install them and how to use soldering tools.

So, if you want a guitar which is good and easy to play, which have killer sound and which you don't need tune every fucking minute, you need to use little more money. Everything else is a waste of time and energy, because with crappy guitars training is tiresome. Go for the Japanese Ibanez, not Korean build one, those have very good price/quality- ratio.

For example: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sop=12&_nkw=ibanez+555&_frs=1 (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sop=12&_nkw=ibanez+555&_frs=1)

I played a solo gig last night...  it was 8:55pm, last song of the night, tiki hut gig, and this older couple was there.   I was killing time with the 4 chords from "Fade to Black" by Metallica, on loop with some pretty leads.  You know, sneaking in stuff I love, making it sound pretty for background dining.  They jumped up and had a slow dance to it.  I ended up faking the entire song then playing that Bm solo outro as they slow danced away.  They were so happy, slow dancing to Metallica.   They looked like every other older couple in a restaurant... they heard chord #1 of the song and jumped up "Metallica!"   LOL

Metal is the only genre where a $199 ibanez, stacked with enough crap distortion and overdrive, can be "good enough" for learning and playing at home.  I have an Ibanex RGB? series from back in 7th grade, still plays perfect for that purpose.

You can't play LIVE with it, just too tinny, but nobody is going to go out and see a metal band anyway, until you're big enough to afford a nicer axe.

Little secret for you to know: Active takes batteries only if you keep cord plugged all the time, because the plug is the power switch. I replace the battery to my active bass not more than yearly ;D

Schecter makes some nice stuff. Look into the c1-classic (if they still make them), beautiful guitars, play great. $700 in 2007. Two humbuckers with coil splits so when you get over the metal shit you'll have single coil like sounds. String through body with through body neck, great sustain. Grover tuners.

That is true if you only want make some noise. If you really want to learn how to play, it is futile to buy crappy instrument, because training will be even harder. It will never be on tune, it will never sound right, the neck is too thick to handle and if you try to do a setup for that darn thing it will go to pieces  ;D

true.  After years of buying ibanez, then washburn, then ephphone les paul knockoff, then actual les paul studio... I finally graduated to Parker Fly.  Now it's the only guitar i ever want to play.  If he's a beginner though, not sure if he'll stick with it, a $199 ibanez works.  By the time he's good enough to appreciate the flaws in his instrument, he's commited enough to buy a $1500 instrument.

Something like the new Ibanez RG421EX would be good:

http://www.gear4music.es/en/Guitar-and-Bass/Ibanez-RG421EX-Electric-Guitar-Black-Flat/15Y2

The fixed bridge is good for palm muted playing and also means the guitar should stay in tune better than some others. Also, this guitar has a fast neck and high output humbuckers.

I wouldn't bother with active pickups in the $200-400 range. A good EMG-81 and EMG-60 would cost about $200 on their own.

TBM.

I started playing guitar in 7th grade.  By 9th grade i was playing with little garage bands.  I only moved to bass at age 18 because I wanted to gig.  Everyone played guitar, nobody played bass. So I could pick and choose bands and gig nonstop, even though I usually pwned the lead guitarist of the band I was in, on guitar.

These days, it's corporate gigs at wedding, ritz on bass/vocals, and solo/duo work at nicer clubs on acoustic guitar.   I flirt with electric lead guitar again, but late nights, ugh.

I'd recommend guitarists learn bass too.  Opens up plenty of work and you can always push out the existing guitarist from a band when you feel like it ;)

Back in the day I had a Charvel, Guild, Strat and an Ibanez.

Out  of all of them the Ibanez had the best action and the
Floyd Rose never went out of tune..

This I got three active bass's( I think) and haven't changed the batteries in them in quite a while. Granted I play mostly unplugged(semi acoustics etc)

I  sorta play both, would play guitar more however I have little interest in most rock music these days, much rather play katy perry songs on bass or any other shit, than to pretend to care about most rock music.

Jazz classical, fusion and experimental shit got my interest right now. I think Im gonna start playing upright, once I find a place where Ican actually practice it.

those old wireless units said they would reach 250 feet, by samson, I think.  They never did.  150 feet at best.  Less reliable than a Ferguson PD's sense of distance.

Most musicians just need to decide on their goals as early as possible.  I wanted to be a guitarist in hottest band around, did that for a few years.  I wanted to 'go corporate', did that.  I wanted to do duos and solos, did that.  But I wasted too much time along the way being indecisive.

Yawn this broscience on guitars is almost bad as the bro science on working out.
Things that matter on a guitar. Is the intonation proper. Does the neck fit to the shape of your hands(huge deal for most people I think matters more than almost anything else).
Are the tuners and action properly set up. The guitar should stay in tune unless the tuners are shit, or the neck is a piece of shit.
Keep up on replacing the strings. And pay attention to what kind of pic you use, and where you play from.

Learn something about acoustics, and understand what an eq is. Don't assume that a good tone by yourself, works well with a band it almost never does. Realize must guitarists are fucking clueless about tone.

To me there is nothing worst than a musicians that can only play one song(one genre).

Buy a guitar that fits your hands and your body - looks are important... buy a used one of higher quality.
When you have more money buy a custom made guitar... if you love playing, custom made may provide THE guitar for you.
Be very careful about technique... alternate picking done the wrong way in the long run may seriously harm your elbow.
Be patient and let your own take on things develop.
And....

squat and oatz!

I just meant if a person wants to be a working musician.  They should say "I want to do XYZ" and study, work, practice and attain that.  It's not too hard.  Then decide if they like that world/role/situation, then move on to the next goal.

personally, I spent too much time waffling between the two to really become amazing at either.  Once I committed to guitar, I quickly became very strong and my band rose.

For just learning purposes, you're totally right... jam with R&B, bluegrass, zeppelin and mozart daily for ultimate skill set development.

Got an LTD MH-350FR STBLK which comes standard with EMG pickups, neckthrubody, plays well, probably as a beginner you don't want to have a guitar with a floating bridge though, since they're a bit of a hassle to tune and keep in tune (or atleast that's always been my experience). For that reason I've always prefered to play and practice on my Ibanez ART-320TGB, goodlooking and relatively cheap guitar, had mine for 7 years now, and still looks/plays well. (If I still played I would be able to go into more detail haha). Should be able to buy around the $300 mark, probably cheaper, has active pickups.

I got an old Ibanez "Joe Satriani" model from the late 90s..... I'm not any better than 20 years ago (sad) when I was in high school.  And I was pretty decent back then, being able to play most rhythm sections of Metallica (fairly easy) to Megadeth and Pantera....a few slower solos, but not much else :(   Life took over.  Just bought an amp a few months ago to try to get back into it.

go on craigslist or ebay and pick up an LTD mh350nt, I had one for a while and it was great. Theyre about 5-600 bucks new, which puts them in your budget if you buy used.

x2 on schecters, I've had 2 schecter 7 strings and I love my current one, a c7 hellraier hybrid. it has the new 57/66 active EMG pickups which I really like, slim satin finish neck and ebony fretboard.

I'd stay away from the active pickups until you get more proficient, and by that point you may find you like the passives more. the LTD I mentioned before had the 81/85 EMG combo in, but I swapped the 85 to the bridge and it chunked up my sound a lot without sounding muddy. I was playing that thru a laney ironheart head in C standard and my god it was a brutal combo. I just dont get on with 6s anymore I have to play 7 string guitars because the neck is just so comfortable width wise for my hands.

Ibanez is solid I suppose but I've heard nothing but good about the Jackson JS series of guitars. I had a Jackson at one point too, a made in japan pro series dinky that I really liked. I hated the bolt on construction though it was the only caveat I had with it.

Go fixed bridge for sure, trems are useless on guitars in your budget. a basic tune o matic string thru body set up is ideal for metal playing.

overall id grab a used LTD 300 or 400 series guitar, make sure its made in indonesia not china. The neck will be comfy- slim but not overly thin, it will be finished nicely and feel rock solid. Good pickups too, usually EMG or seymour duncans depending on the model. I like the horizon shape the most, but the eclipse is a fantastic guitar too, and EC401 is a solid guitar for the money. if you can find a good deal on a korean made schecter thats also a great choice. I like the banshee series and the hellraiser series a lot. the banshees come with active or passive pickups,, your choice, and locking tuners and low profile hipshot bridges (GREAT BRIDGE take it from a guy who loved his tunomatics for years).
Dont buy from guitar center either. That place sells used guitars as new. Ive seen off the shelf fenders with scratches all over the pickguard cus some kid came in and played green day and metallica for 2 hours with a crappy pick. speaking of picks, try the jazz 3's. great pick for metal.

Thanks bro for writing this. I am glad you said the JS line from jackson because thats exactly what I got. V shaped JS32T. Sounded soooo much better at GC than the 200 dollar ibanez ones. I do notice the V shape makes it semi difficult to play while sitting but its super fun. Your post was like spot on to everything the sales rep at GC told me about the bridges, active pick ups, etc

Ah so that's where your political craftiness comes into play 8)

lol oh i'm such a dick.  i've joined bands, with my sole plan being to wait til this entitled d-bag screws up, and having a trained bassist ready, and me scooting into guitarist's role.

many guitarists really are pricks.   "Nobody can do what I do, so I can be late, play out drama, etc".

And that's when the "quiet new guy" bassist who he never paid much attention to and whose name he never gave the respect of learning steps in, sticks a dagger through his heart and takes away his job.

Checkmate.

dude, when the guitarist doesn't know how to play a major scale... and you're a bassist, playing a nice D Bm G A progression with nice major note runs... and this fat-faced obama voting weakling is playing everything in minor blues pentatonic... I get angry.

I'm a total prick to work with, if the player is a hack.  Pros, they love me, and I love them.  The problem isn't the hacks, it's me agreeing to play with them.  Luckily I'm in a spot now where it's corporate stuff with high end players, fill-ins when I don't give a shit how the band sounds cause I'm just covering a spot, duos where I control all the music with a hot chick singer, or solos where I ask the crowd to log in to getbig.com during the breaks.

I saw a Youtube clip of Terry Kath playing on 25 or 5 to 4.  I don't think there is a metal guitarist who can better that. Even
Hendrix said Kath was better than him. High praise.

Do you ever quickly check your phone for getbig threads on stage while the singer is up there bullshitting with the audience in between songs??

Probably with the pros it would be tough to get away with but the hacks in some lower rent night club I'm sure you could pull it off.  :)

These days, everyone has an ipad clipped to their mic stand, so they can use OnSong to read lyrics.  So I can sneak a peak with the hotspot web surfing.   especially on songs I dont play on.

There's a whole generation of kids that can't play a show without their ipads.  I had one singer almost cancel a show because he forgot his charger and didn't know the words to Sweet HOme Alabama or Folsom Prison.   I ended up singing most of that show.

back in the day, i'd have a cheat sheet with the first line of each verse, and cheat from that.  Or write out the song lyrics over and over until it was in memory.  Today, everyone just blasts out the OnSong set list for the night and voila, it's 4 faces glued to little glow screens, 18 inches below their mic.  takes a lot away from the live show.

Big dude has some very impressive arms.

As far as his playing, it's simple midrange rhythm guitar playing.  Nothing outstanding, pretty much what anyone could do with 2 years of casual jamming with his favorite record.  He did have to focus hard and look at hands for a lot of 3-fret moves, something that a ten-year player woudln't need to do.

I'd rate him a solid enough rhythm guitar for heavy heavy stuff.  Not going to get much work playing publicly for cash, but if the only goal is fun jamming in garage with buddies for fun.

Most of the original bands in the clubs here play death metal or something extremely heavy. Huge metal scene here. Not as much money as playing top-40, but not as much of a snore-fest either. My buddie's Maiden Tribute band is actually beginning to score some A-circuit clubs tho, so maybe there's hope after all.

That article is hilarious but not in the way intended. GQ acts like Biden is some hip cool dude, new on the scene when in reality he’s been in the Washington swamp for 50 years.
