Slowdown has cost city over $46M in lost revenue
The New York Post ^  | January 12, 2015 | Michael Gartland and Leonard Greene

Posted on ‎1‎/‎12‎/‎2015‎ ‎8‎:‎37‎:‎37‎ ‎AM by Timber Rattler

It’s the high price of the NYPD slowdown. Feuding between cops and City Hall has already cost the city more than $46 million in lost parking-ticket revenue — staggering losses that could take a bite out of critical programs and services, critics charged Sunday.

“It’s not a natural disaster — this is man made,” said Glen Bolofsky, president of Parkingticket.com, a ticket-fighting service which crunched the numbers.

Because ticket revenue is accounted for in the city’s budget — $518 million a year, according to a November 2014 Office of Management and Budget report — the spectrum of a budgetary shortfall has become real.

“There obviously are some financial ramifications,” said Councilman Brad Lander (D-Brooklyn).

The drain amounts to more dough than the city lost in ticket revenue to Superstorm Sandy — because the feds eventually reimbursed those millions.

I love how they say there is no quota by cops to issue summons and then freak out at the loss of revenue from it.  Total BS

One of the biggest issues I have had w cops - in NY at least - is that their primary role is revenue generation more than anything else.   They say there are no quotas etc etc - but this sort of explodes that myth doesn't it?

I can't speak for New York, but Austin, like every mid to large city factors in annual revenue from enforcement into their budget. It's based on historical data and is not an absolute. I can imagine it bugs the city managers when revenue drops from enforcement. I know there have been times in my lifetime here where the city managers have voiced their concern over lack of revenue from tickets. When that happens, the police managers will ask their subordinates to review their officers activity. If there is an explaination for the change, i.e. weather disasters, special events or other things that impacted enforcement then that is reported back. If the review shows officers are simply not choosing to enforce traffic laws then that gets addressed. We don't have qoutas here, I don't think qoutas exist these days however we do have historical data and experience. A patrol officer here can manage to write an average of say 1 ticket in a 10 hr shift in between calls. If officers are going several days without writing some kind of ticket, the Sergeant will remind them traffic enforcement is part of their job. Cops generally don't like writing tickets and would rather respond to calls and try and catch the "bad guys". Some officers don't realize the value of enforcing traffic laws and look at it as an unpleasant chore.

THIS.

When police shifts are cut and crime goes up..
When NY taxes go up like crazy...
When NY teachers are laid off...

then we'll see this for what it is... a lazy political stunt.  There are SO MANY great ways to undermine a mayor and embarass him.  You don't need to disrupt funerals and do the "We'll collect our paychecks, but let people do crimes now" bullshit.

Are the detectives chasing rape and murder cases also "taking it easy" to make the mayor look bad?  Maybe after a few serial killers or rapists make their mark, with minimal police intereference, people will think different

"LMFAO" at police killing the city budget and making the city less safe"?   LOL WTF, dude?

I'd say reduced police force numbers and purposefully "not doing their police duties" is worse for the people that live there too.

Yall can't carry guns, you need the police, no matter how crooked, to keep yall safe.  That "delay" they're all taking in responding to calls might cost you or a loved one your life.

I'm all for the police protesting, but just call in and say "let someone do my police work, I want to be political".   Their on-duty protest is going to cost lives, and then it won't be funny anymore.

"New York Doctors protesting obamacare promise to only give 50% of their effort during heart surgeries"

"New York Firefighters protesting diBlasio vow to leave 1/3 of fires to burn"

"New York Teachers vow to teach profanity and show porn to protest the mayor"

"New York Senators promise to vote to declare war on China to protest 20 ounce coffees"

At some point, these political stunts affect people.  When you vow not to do your job - and part of your job is saving lives of those who trust you - that's not really "LMFAO" material.

I guess we can wait until some gangrape and maybe some increases in murder rate, then we can really draw some ROFLOCOPTERS in celebration.

Actually thats because I don't mind paying for free college or Obamacare.....amnesty will actually cost less money due to not looking for, and deporting all those persons who have jobs and are law abiding.

I don't know if you live in NY, but New York City has a history of supporting its government through nonsense tickets on drivers and businesses. which is why I made that comment....NY has turned its police force into revunue-generating taxmen.......and often blacks andf the little guy are the targets of such through nuisance tickets

DiBlasio was right.....and even he admit to having talks with his son concerning interaction with police..as a matter of fact, many whites with black sons have admitted through social media that they have had this talk.....so its not just black paranoia...the mayor was acknowledging a fact...cops are supported the vast majority of time when they shoot someone.....

I'm white.  My kid is white.  Most police around here are white.

I tell my kid "Dude, cops have a stressful-ass job.  They never know when the person they stop for running a red light happens to have murder warrants or a dead body in the trunk.  They are prepared all day to be in a life-or-death gun battle.  So you have to work with them, go above and beyond to BE CAREFUL around them.  Move slow, double check if you're reaching for anything, offer to let them grab stuff, and agree within reason with requests to diffuse situations"

The day after 4 cops were wasted in a diner in seattle, i was pulled over.  Amber alert for a kidnapped 3 year old blond boy by a scruffy white dude.  I was a scruffy white dude with a blond 3 year old.  They were on edge and thought they had a kidnapper on their hands.  I happily kept hands on wheel and agreed to be cuffed while they removed my gun from pocket and made sure kid wasn't kidnapped.

I didn't like it, but I know they're stressed out and only human.

I think most parents take steps to make sure their kids stay safe when not around them. Do you think he and those white parents also talked to their children about being careful around blacks as they are much more likely to be assaulted or killed by them?

BS.  Law-abiding citizens, regardless of color, are not being gunned down by the police.  The mayor's son will not have a problem unless he beats the crap out of a stranger (Martin), gets stoned, robs a store, assaults and then charges a cop (Brown), or gets arrested 31 times, is on parole for violent crime, and resists arrest (Garner).  So unless his son is going to be a thug, what he hold him is unmitigated BS.

sometimes they are.  not often.  usually the person shot has it coming.  But sometimes, no.  sometimes, people that don't break the law are gunned down.

they move too fast for their wallet, for example, like the gas station shooting we saw recently.   cop screamed "give me your wallet" and the dude quickly obeyed.  Too quickly lol... cop shot him.  dude didn't break a law to get shot.

Naw. These cops aren't ignoring crime. They're ignoring the primary job of the NYPD... collecting money from citizens. The sole purpose of this "protest" is to hit DiBlasio's administration in the pockets.

Naw. These cops aren't ignoring crime.

LOL!   yes, they are, and they're bragging about it.  Maybe not "big" crimes, but lots of little ones.  Stop-and-frisk is 99% done.  They're letting people pee on the curb.

Arrests are down HUGE in 2015:
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/06/nyregion/decrease-in-new-york-police-arrests-continues-for-a-second-week.html?_r=0

Now, either criminals in NY suddenly magically turned into non-scumbags....
OR...
They stopped getting arrested for it ;)

I highly doubt morality was just discovered as the ball dropped this year.  But they're not going to jail for it as much, not my a huge margin.  And traffic offenses down 90%... does that make the roads SAFER?   Will these unsafe drivers mean Jan 2015 accident deaths will be higher than 2014?   Probably.

Critics will say "just a coincidence that as police slack off, criminals suddenly start being good and traffic deaths rise!"  But IMO, criminals are still being bad, they're jsut not getting busted for it.  And ignoring traffic crimes?  You're missing a lot of bad guys, and you're making roads more dangerous.

Stats will NOT be pretty for this one  :(

Just too funny.

I hope the mayor himself needs the police and they tell him to go get fucked. That would be the icing on the cake.

Why?  from what we are hearing, "arrests are down"!

people are suddenly sweethearts.  Lower arrest numbers have nothing to do with police slacking.  Why would people beg for police to... um... "stop slacking"?

they're gambling with public safety.  And eventually, some NYC citizen will suffer because of their selfish actions.

it's true tho.   The funeral thing was classless, but only hurt feelings.

The Jan 2015 accidents/casualties from traffic are going to be way worse than 2014.  Even though "useless tickets" are down.  Many of these tickets are for things that keep people safe.  I bet people in NY are parking anywhere, shifting lanes without giving a shit, then double parking to get out and urinate on a bus stop bench.

No, they won't.  Basically, 95% of what NYPD officers do is bullshit to generate revenue. You could fire half of the department and actual crime would probably stay level. The only thing that would change is $$$ for city.

I think its even more rare, certainly in my experience, when a cop knows another cop is breaking the law, certainly committing a felony offense, and they don't say something. Even if just for the sake of keeping their jobs. Again, let me say I am naive about NYPD and LAPD. My experience in a Dept that considered large but pales in comparison to those two departments is that "bad" cops are outed by cops. It's not a made up number that the vast majority of our Internal Affairs complaints originate from inside the department. Corrupt cops don't last long here. No doubt some exist as I type this and tomorrow we may all read about a local cop who was robbing banks on the side..but there won't be any cops covering up for him. With recordings it's almost impossible for cops to get away with anything anymore. Yeah, there are bad cops, and its my job and every other person wearing a badge to get them off the force. Back to your example of the firefighters..yeah, there have been fire fighters that have set fires in the past, but I doubt any of his coworkers knew about it. If they did and didn't report it, their dirt bags. Same with cops. This blue wall isn't that high these days.. at least not in my experience
