I'm watching it right now.... Post-workout. This movie might not be quite as highly rated as Goodfellas; it is very entertaining.
-
Top 5. I'd go Godfather 1-2, then Goodfellas, then you can lump Brasco and Casino to round it out. I'm drawing a blank on any more. Not sure if True Romance counts or not.
-
Definitely top 5.
-
prefer Carlito's way over it
-
It's a must watch, not even debatable...
-
It sucks. Depp is a no talent.
-
highly,,,awesome movie..sonnyred/sonny black,,madsen was great in it ,,,
-
Lets see -
1) Godfather 1
2) Goodfellas
3) Casino (I like Casino more than Goodfellas, but Goodfellas is the better pure Mafia film).
4) Godfather II
5) Donnie Brasco
That's how I rank the major Italian Mob films. Where the family structure, etc.... of the mob is a major theme, not just a plot device.

GODFATHER 2 SHOULD RISE ABOVE A FEW OR ALL...A MASTERPIECE...
-
Brosco's book is great. You really see the struggle he's having befriending these guys. He genuinely like them.
-
Godfather II is a pretty film, but it just doesn't have the rewatchablity to me that the two Scorsese films have to me. I'll plop my ass down and watch from any starting point the first 3 films on that list, but with Godfather II, I just don't get that.

i'm surprised,,i find the old school street 'festa'and killing of don finucci'black hand'compelling/operatic.

Like others said, top 5, top 10 at worst... Pacino was great in it...
-
The Untouchables was better...
-
Brasco is weird. It just doesn't flow. Doesn't quite work. Pacino as the dunce gangster doesn't work. Not even top-10 gangster stuff.
-
I can't and will never understand the love for the movie, Donnie Brasco.
The movie is pure shit. From the lousy acting and the guiney mafia accents and stereotype slogans(Fahget aboutit!) ::) None of the actors seemed believable as real gangsters and the movie dialogue was terrible.
Go watch Once upon a Time in America or the Godfather 1 & 2 if you want to see real gangster movies.

I THOUGHT LEFTY RUGGEIRO WAS POTRAYED GREAT BY PACINO..LOW LEVEL HOOD WHO WASN'T SMART ENOUGHTN TO BECOME CAPTAIN/SKIP..SCENES IN MIAMI/BRUNO KIRBY RATTING/THE BASEMENT SCENE ..MOVIE IS GREAT...
-
The Untouchables was better...
So was Road to Perdition.

WELL THEN IF BRASCO WAS LOUSY ACTING,,,WHAT ABOUT MICKEY BLUE EYES/ANALYZE THIS/THAT WHICH WERE COMEDIC THEY WERE STEREOTYPICAL IF ANYTHING,,ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA WAS GOOD..
-
So was Road to Perdition.
X2 proof of why tom hanks is hyper underrated dude. Proof no one likes beta males.

I think it works with the idea that these people really aren't what they're cracked up to be. They're imitation gangster from the get go. The larger than life characters you get in typical films is the complete opposite of the point of the movie. IT was based on a true story and had a lot to do with how human these people really were.

The acting was still horrible along with the dialogue. The movie sucks, period.

Watch "Godfather: A Novel For Television". I've only seen it on tv twice ND it's great. It is broken down chronologically, where it begins with the scenes of Part II and goes from there. It's cool to see it without the flashbacks and in order.
I made a thread about it here before, but cant ever find the movie on dvd.

We agree to disagree. I do find myself watching Brasco if I'm flipping channels but it just falls flat for me.
-
Mean Streets should be in the Top 5.
1) Godfather 2
2) Goodfellas
3) Godfather
4) Mean Streets
5) Donnie Brasco (I place this possibly higher than I should because I have met Pistone and have a signed copy of his book)
6) Casino (I think this is actually an over-rated film, even though I am a confirmed Scorsese nut).

Njflex, I becoming slightly concerned about your sticky Caps lock button. Should I send over The Geek Squad?

AGREED ITS A MATTER OF TASTE SO TO SPEAK,,,
-
HOW ABOUT 'THE FRESHMAN'ITS A COMEDY BUT ITS GREAT,,
-
Don Corleone predicted it properly.
Drugs would be the ultimate downfall of that "thing of theirs".
-
On a scale of 1-10,I give it a 7 ..........good flick for sure.
-
So was Road to Perdition.
One of my favorite "modern" gangster flicks.
-
Mean Streets should be in the Top 5.
4) Mean Streets
Mean Streets and A Bronx Tale give me pause, I tend to think of them as coming of age films, than traditional Mafia films.
-
I actually like Pacino in Brasco. It's a tiny bit over acted, but it's rather faithful to the real guy in tone and style -
.

sorry....lol..cured ;D,, :-*

king of new York...
-
Donnie Brasco is a great film, Depp's hair in that movie is impeccable ;D. Another really great mafia movie that is awesome and doesn't really get mentioned is Gotti, its an HBO Original film, starring Armond Assante as Gotti, he won a Golden Globe or something for it, I highly recommend it.
-
Gotti is very good...King of New York another one. I think all the top ones have been mentioned.....but another is Sean Penn in State of Grace. Its the closest they've gotten to take on the Westies...irish mob in New York.

Yeah, that was a good film, I don't think it gets as much attention because it was an early HBO film -
.
I saw this a bit ago, not a great film (6-7/10), but a fun sunday afternoon watch -
.
The true story is a bit darker and more interesting -

Kill the Irishman is a a solid Irish mob film, Not in the same league as State of Grace, but much stronger than the trailer shows -
.
-
I liked that one a lot....but its Cleveland right? I need to watch that again. Copland....not mob so much but all the same type of actors
-
Just an average movie or a bit better since "average" movie nowadays is terrible. It was watcheable but nothing great about it. Seen it once and no desire to see it again.
-

Yep, that's it.
Another good one is the Italian film, Gomorrah. You just need to like subtitles, it's more of a street to mid level mob film -
.
-
So was Road to Perdition.
Hell yeah it was. So were State of Grace and Miller's Crossing, among others.
-
It's great both Johnny Depp and Pal Pacino are real talent.
-
they should have done a donnie brasco PREQUEL.
Those characters were all funny and likeable and awesome (except depp, he was a pouty bitch and DB should have been cast to someone cooler).
Show us the adventures of them in the 5 years before douchebag Brasco showed up.
-
Once Upon A Time in America, another good underrated Mob movie.
-
The Departed is better than Road to Perdition.
-
Top ten for sure.
-
I can't and will never understand the love for the movie, Donnie Brasco.

I agree with a lot of this. The book was very good though. Interesting to capture the lives of ordinary gangsters. Most mob movies are about the top guys who guys who make a big score. Brasco was more about the regular everyday guys
-
American Me about the dude who started the Mexican Mafia is a really good gangster movie. Dudes got killed for cooperating with the movie
-
Hoffa is a good semi-mafia movie
-
"Brotherhood" Showtime series is not bad. A Bronx Tale is a decent flick. Bar scene is pimp. " Now you'se can't leave".
-
Don't like it, like someone else said it doesn't flow, like a mish mash of scenes thrown together.
-
The Departed is better than Road to Perdition.
I'd give 'em both tens, but I'm pretty liberal with my tens.
(Easy, Coach, it don't mean what you think here.)
