Title: anyone play the lotto?
Post by: El Diablo Blanco on January 15, 2015, 08:07:09 AM
I've been playing for a long while now.  play anywhere from $1 to $20 or more a week on scratchers and the lotto.  Never win shit.  I know going in that I won't win but I still play.  That hope you get when you're drowing that God would save you but never does.  I'd estimate that if I just deposited the money I spent on tickets into a money market account I probably would easily have $100K+ dollars today at my disposal.

Some fat slob in my area won a million dollars from a scratcher last year.  I don't play.

Hell no.
Known too many people with gambling issues and don't want to go there...

Scratchers suck... it's like playing slot machines in a casino... you may win a couple bucks here and there, but you never win the jackpot.

Best to forget about the Powerball and Mega Millions games.  Someone could play the Powerball (odds 1:175,000,000) or  Mega Millions (1:270,000,000) everyday for the next 5000 years and never win.  Cash 5 games have much better odds.  I only play them when they roll up to $1,000,000, which is rare.

You'd think the lotto corp would have had mathematicians draw out these odds before they create these games.

Scratch off lottery is the definition of white trash. "Oh somebody I know won $2000" yeah and they spent $4000 over the years playing it.

Slot machines too, these fucked up people sitting there until they shit themselves because it's too addicting and they can't walk away. Why would a casino put machines on the floor that are gonna give away their own money?Again, I know you know someone who "won 80 grand" but think of all the soiled underwear it took to get there. What respectable human spends their hard earned (or otherwise) money on a game called "jaguar princess" or "eagle dynasty II"?

-may be missing a few teeth/poor dental hygiene

there have been multiple people who have won large sums (5-6-7 figures) 2 or even 3 times. same person. the odds are so astronomical and the unfairness so stupendous it makes you wonder about the universe.

I owned a gas station/store in Texas and sold millions of them over the years and no one hit a jackpot. Kinda puts it in perspective for me. But.. when the jackpot gets really high, I might buy a quick pick for fun. We had regulars that would spend their paychecks on scratch offs while they were in the parking lot. Buy $40 worth, go out to their cars, scratch them off, bring in the $5 they might have won, buy $40 more and repeat the process until they were out of money. People spending over $3 or $4 a week on lotto tickets in my opinion are making a bad financial decision. It goes past a fun game/gamble to wasting money that could have been invested or used elsewhere. I think people who try and justify spending more than that likely have an addiction to it.

Everyone has these stories but in my case it is true.  My dad used to play the smaller lotto that had 5 numbers, odds aren't as bad as the bigger ones and the payoff was in the couple hundred thousand dollar range.  He'd play the same numbers weekly for years.  The one week he didn't play his numbers came up.  What are the fucking odds of that?

sure odds are against you hitting the big jackpot but what are the odds you become rich if you dont play? A heck of a lot less..

The guy who won had just as much of a chance as you did so whats the problem.

For 99.9% of people the only way to EVER have ANY chance at complete financial freedom is via the lottery if you are not born into a rich family.

Your statement does not make sense.

What are the odds of you losing your money? 99.9%. How many people become broke and homeless from gambling? A LOT more than actually win it big.

Moral of the story: Keep your money in your pocket.

3 years later, the money ran out, and she left.

I bet the minimum per game on Megabucks ($1) and Powerball ($2) for a total of $5 a week. It only takes one ticket to win. The most I ever won so far is about $60. Clearly it is a financially losing proposition. Still $5 so you can legitimately dream about winning the "big one" is small potatoes. At my age, I'd probably not have time to spend it if I won anyway.

Just so you know, I don't enjoy gambling per se. When in Vegas, I go to the shows and spend a lot of time people watching. I am the opposite of Uncle Junior. No poker games for me.

Truly $1 to win.  With odds of 1/175 million, spending 1 dollar or even $1000 on tickets won't affect the odds.

The only criteria I meet is being elderly.
I don't smoke
Rarely, do I drink beer
I shower often
My beard is trimmed daily
It is unusual for me to be grumpy
Neither am I skinny nor am I overweight
I look very healthy
There are 30 of my own pearly white teeth in my mouth (two were removed for orthodontic reasons when I was a kid).

I don't play, because if I had a dream to own millions I wouldn't go about it like this.

My dreams are more structured and I have tangible plans to achieve them step by step....started out my career wearing a an Armani watch and driving a second hand Renault megane, worked my way bit by bit to reach Rolex and new Merc level, 3 holidays instead of one...etc. The dream is continuing and I keep working at it, but I set realistic dreams...I don't unfortunately have a formula yet to make 5 million pounds yet, but a lottery ticket is not my answer.

Sad story was some broken down waitress in Vegas who on her off hour played the megabucks and won something like $20 million.  She went out and bought herself a dream sports car and crashed it that day ending up paralyzed from the waist down for life.

Vegas called her and said "The house always wins"

In other words, if you were to play the lottery into infinity, you would never turn a profit because the true odds exceed the potential winnings.

I've heard that many times...However there are many dreamers in the world that just like to be in the game. They know the odds are retarded(after all it's really just a form of entertainment) but in the end, all it takes is one ticket. When one of these stupid people hit a massive jackpot of over 100million, there are tons of very smart lawyers and finance people lining up trying to get a piece of the dummies pie who played the lottery...

We have great tellers at my bank. I go to the teller for pretty much everything. I occasionally take money out at the ATM. I do find it interesting when people like yourself act like you own the ATM and can therefore dictate to others when to and when not to use it. Some banks in Europe have no tellers, just ATM's.

I remember a group of people developing an LLC to do this. They would tie up lottery machines for hours with their people playing the combinations at different locations before the drawing. Texas Lottery changed the rules to limit how many tickets at a time a person could buy to break up the team. They were unable to buy all the combinations between drawings

I buy the scratchers as gifts during the holidays for fun never seen more than $50 even asking people in the 7-11 that scratch them all the time or sell them very rarely does anyone ever win more than few hundred on scratchers and I'm sure they are in way deeper. Many Chinese migrate to the US with a LOT of cash.  The person you saw was probably accessing different family members accounts and taking out the max each time.  Many wealthy Chinese bought their way into the US.  If they spent a certain $ amount on real estate, they were given a free green card... it's true.

I was so excited last night because I found out I won $4 on Powerball. Next up, $400,000,000 which I am probably too old to spend before I die. Ever wonder why we old folks flock to buy lottery tickets? It really doesn't make a bunch of sense.
