Title: The term African American is outdated and demeaning.
Post by: King Shizzo on February 04, 2015, 05:51:13 AM
We dont refer to white people as European Americans or oriental people as Asian Americans, so why are black people ok with being labeled as basically a sub-standard American?

Everyone else are just Americans, but that black fella over there is an African American  ???

Blatant racism right under everyone's noses.

I see your point, but I am more in line with what someone like Morgan Freeman thinks.

"Im not an African American, I am an American. We dont need a single month set aside for us".

Not a direct quote, but the jist of what he was saying.

We cant make progress by living in the past.

What's funny is that in South Texas in particular those folks with Mexican roots can be very particular about it.   Some label them Mexican-Americans, some Hispanics (which some folks with Mexican roots despise), some Latino, some Chicano, etc.....

Most of the time it's the folks that insist upon being referred to as Mexican or Mexican-American that are the most outspoken.  I'll ask what city in Mexico they were born?  Their answer, "I was born in Texas".  I'll ask what city in Mexico their parents were born in.  Their answer, "They were born in Texas."  I'll ask what city in Mexico their grandparents were born in?  Their answer, "They were born in Texas."  I'll ask what city in Mexico their great grandparents were born in?  Their answer will either be,"My great grandparents were both in [random city in Mexico]," or "my great grandparents were born in Texas, but my great, great grandparents were born in [random city in Mexico]."

Summary, aside from their great, great grandparents everyone else is an American.  Not a Mexican.  Not a Mexican-American.  Just an American.  I've never filled out a job application with "German/Irish-American" because my great, great, great grandparents were born in Germany and Ireland LOL.

Basically, the term "African-American" is meaningless for the vast majority of blacks unless they themselves were born in Africa.  And even if they were born in Africa and became American citizens they are now Americans.  Enough of this hyphenated "[blank]-American" stuff.  If someone is born in another country and has dual citizenship in the country of their birth and America and maintains a permanent residence in both countries then use the hyphenated name thing  ::).  From what I understand though, the laws of dual citizenship in most countries are very restrictive and selective (I can't speak to it in any depth).

For me the issue is borderline pretentious nonsense.

I agree there's nothing wrong with being proud of your heritage and knowing your roots.

I'm proud of mine and I've learned about them, but because I have roots in Ireland and Germany yet born in the US doesn't mean I should label myself a German/Irish-American LOL.

I've never been to Germany or Ireland.  I'm just an average, stoopid, fat American with first world problems.

It's simple do I call my self British American because my family came here from there 300 years ago? No. I'm American and if you where born in Africa and moved here and are now a U.S. citizen then you are a African American

My ex wife was white and born in South Africa 7 generationa of her family was from tgere. She was a African American and some black guy got into it with her because he said he was African American and she wasn't.

Your not African American if your born in the U.S. your American.

I wouldn't move to Mexico and say I'm a American mexican it's a stupid concept. But some want to be proud of there home and I get it

Hey, I never said I was the only person to contemplate such an issue.

What I will say, is that I did not get my idea for this thred from another thread on another forum. If I make a thread about a news story, then I give a link to the source article.

Then we have aj who will believe what anyone says, and even though I just fuck around with him, his hatred for me is obvious.

I dont steal direct threads from other websites. This is the only forum I read.

Army of Cum is the guy who rips off threads from other forums.

Was it white guilt who came up with "African American"?  It might have been a better alternative than the other "horrible" ways people used to describe black people, but it sounds like another way to divide us.

Who decided on the term African American? Was it not African Americans themselves? Interestingly enough, some of the African Americans I've met call each other n i g g a, which is about as politically incorrect and demeaning at one can get.

We all know where the term negro came from. It's the Spanish/Portuguese word for "black".

I still say that the N-word may have originated from the original slave owners describing where they got some of the slaves from.

How long has N i g e r  been the name of a city in Africa?
