Title: Tinkerers/electronic guys/ audio geeks.....need some advice.
Post by: Palpatine Q on February 07, 2015, 10:51:05 PM
I have this Divinci home theater in one thing just kicking around.  the connectors are broken off the back, the display doesn't work so I can't change the input or anything like that... but it turns on and it powers up, and the sub is pretty righteous, it pounds and its tight.

what I want to know is if I can just bastardize this thing and make it power up and use it as a sub, I'm thinking all of the resistors and shit for a crossover should be right there.

I've disassembled it and these are the pictures of the components

Sub.

Yes I know...I can go to Fry's Electronics, on go on Craigslist and buy one for $200, but I feel like fixing this one .   no disrespect but please don't tell me what I'm doing wrong, or 17 different ways you can make a home thater .

If I I have to go out and buy a proper crossover for 50-75 bucks, and run my bookshelf speakers and the sub feed thru it...that's fine. But if I have to go out and spend hundreds of dollars ,fuck it I'll just go buy a dedicated subwoofer/amp

can I do it or not, lol. Thanks in advance

Johnny Falcon is the expert on electricity here. Should have directly addressed the question to him.

His knowledge of electricity is extensive, yet he will have no idea how to help you with this, or any other electrical issue.

Why did you cut the transformer wires from the amp board (they plug in with a connector)?

Was this amp board inside the sub?

Also you said "but it turns on and it powers up, and the sub is pretty righteous, it pounds and its tight.", so whats the problem?

It used to.  Its been through the wringer, friends borrowed it....one was a dj who tried to hook turntables up to it.  I forgot I even had it...figured it was thrown out.  The problem being all the input wires were cut and not labeled, and the display no longer works.  so I don't know what the fuck is what.  but it turns on and when you hit the input button you hear the hiss  of the speaker switching sources.

I can easily put it back together I just wanted to kind of explode, the view so people here can see what they are looking at.   the black wires to the left of the picture of the board were the speaker inputs..I've tried them all and I can't get any sound to pass through the subwoofer

You can put it back together by resoldering the cut wires?

In my experience it's probably not worth attempting to fix if you have no electronics experience. For a start you would need a multimeter.

I'm assuming that the big chip in the middle (controller chip) is not working based on you saying the screen etc doesn't work.

What I would do is make sure the power supply works (bottom right quadrant of board) by measuring voltages in the appropriate places using a multimeter.

The sub amp is the top right quadrant, assuming it is working, I would tap into the audio input of it. Then run an external crossover.

Basically it's not worth the trouble.

I would scrap the lot and buy a cheap "plate amp" off the internet and fit it to the sub box.

e.g.  http://www.parts-express.com/cat/subwoofer-plate-amplifiers/332

Thanks...that's exactly what I wanted to know.  I'm a tinkerer, I felt like fucking with it....what if it's going to get all involved and turn into a giant pain in my ass, I'll just do exactly what you said and just go buy what I need for 100-bucks...

Again, thanks....been perusing that website, that's exactly what I was looking for
