MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - Something many of us have been trying to avoid is now okay to eat.
The nation’s top nutrition panel is dropping its guidelines about avoiding foods that are high in cholesterol.
The new finding by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee means that cholesterol is no longer listed as a “nutrient of concern.”
It’s a move that reverses nearly 40 years of government warnings about cholesterol-rich foods.
Researchers now believe that eating foods like eggs, butter, steaks, shrimp and lobster may not significantly impact the level of cholesterol in the blood or increase the risk of heart disease.
They reviewed the clinical trials that were used in the 1970s and 80s as the basis for warnings about cholesterol and found that the evidence just didn’t add up.
Cholesterol is coming off the naughty list when it comes to nutrients in foods.
Katie Vigessa is a registered dietitian with Nutritional Weight and Wellness.
“They are starting to recognize this ban we’ve had on cholesterol for 40 to 50 years really wasn’t as necessary as we thought it once was,” Vigessa said.
She said the government report falls in line with what many dietitians already believed to be true based on other studies over the years.
“So we are starting to make this shift toward, ‘It is okay to have eggs,'” she said. “You don’t have to only eat the whites. You can eat the egg yolk. It’s a fantastic, beautiful thing.”
Nutritionists who’ve weighed in on the new report say the health warnings about cholesterol all these years caused people to shift to foods high in carbohydrates and sugar.
“So what happened was we got inundated with all this high sugar, high carbohydrate eating and, really, that’s created a lot of the inflammation and heart disease [and obesity] in our system,” Vigessa said.
Doctors say that people with diabetes and other health problems should still be careful about consuming too much cholesterol, and all of us should be wary of foods high in trans fats.
“We are finally realizing that it’s not the cholesterol in our food that’s the problem,” Vigessa said. “It’s really the trans fats, the refined oils that are at the root of a lot of the heart problems.”
So what should we eat? Lots of vegetables and fruits and lean meats, like chicken and fish, and whole grains.
Vigessa said to keep in mind that it’s your liver that produces the largest level of cholesterol in the blood, and this new report indicates that may be a bigger factor in maintaining a healthy cholesterol level than the foods you eat.
As for those trans fats, she said they are in foods like those flavored coffee creamers many of us love, in commercial baked goods like muffins and doughnuts, and in chips and crackers.
This report is great news for people who love eggs.
There are lots of benefits in egg yolks. Vigessa said they’re considered liquid gold. Full of nutrients that are good for our brain and something called choline which is great for our memory.

I remember reading a study where they tried to raise a person's cholesterol by feeding them a lot of eggs a high cholesterol food. It didn't make a difference in blood cholesterol levels.
As they say the liver is the biggest producer of cholesterol. The amount is due to genetics, visceral fat that creates metabolic problems and fitness level. The twist on this with clogged heart attacks as opposed to electrical heart attacks many times the victim has normal or low cholesterol levels. Some might say it's the HDL to LDL ratios but there is something more going on. Many say it's inflammation that is the predictor of risk of a artery clog. Many doctors do C-reactive protein test to measure that risk.
Heart attacks are the number one killer of man. I gave up egg whites a decade ago.

Ironically a few days ago, I overheard some doofus who was doing his entire chest workout on the smith machine preach to this two twink training partners to stay away from cholesterol and how he only uses one yolk with 4 whites in his omelette in the morning. Had a brutally gay tribal tattoo as well. He was a real dickhead
On a side note, this is a victory for hummingbird cake bakers everywhere

I've proved it with my own body and blood tests. I've been eating whole eggs for 30 years, 5-6 days wk... I never had any problems. Besides, who says high blood cholesterol is bad?... pharmaceutical companies, that's who. Most doctors I've seen are ill-educated drug pimps.

What? Collapsing of the arteries?
An arterial blockage is caused by plaque consisting of cholesterol, lipids, calcium and other debris building up to the point that it blocks the arteries.
A stroke typically occurs when there is blood clot, blockage or plaque build up is torn off the side of the blood vessel, allowing blood to flow out into the surrounding areas.
I would agree that refined sugars definately are an integral part of heart disease, but its not the only cause. Excess amounts of protein, fats, including cholesterol and a lack of fiber are all factors.
If you have inflammation and damage in your blood vessels and you have large amounts of cholesterol particles floating around, they are bedding down into the endothelium along with white blood cells to create big mess. There is no point when it is ok to have vast amounts of cholesterol and or fat in your blood (high tryglycerides).
Excess and incorrect food types is the cause of the problem(plus other fators, stress, lack of exercise etc) but cholesterol is one of the building blocks of the symptom. Yes we absolutely need cholesterol for various functions, but thinking hey its ok to having large amounts of it kicking around in your blood is simply a flawed concept.

Industrial seed oils are fats, these fats as you say cause inflammation which set the foundation for cholesterol in the blood to bed down into the endothelium.
If you didnt have any inflammation in your arteries, then perhaps there would be no issue with consuming large amounts of cholesterol.
But its highly unlikely that nobody has any damage or inflammation in their arteries at any time in their life. Sure some people will be less prone, either genetically or through their lifestyle, but either way there will be times when you do, and at those times you dont want to have an excess of one of the building blocks that form arterial plaque.
