Title: 'American Sniper': Chris Kyle's Widow at Center of Quiet Furor Over Profits

What is your take on this?  Who should get the money?

'American Sniper': Chris Kyle's Widow at Center of Quiet Furor Over Profits
By Alex Ben Block

When he was alive, Chris Kyle told friends and business associates that he viewed any profits from his memoir American Sniper as “blood money.” The legendary Navy SEAL, whose account of his four tours of duty in Iraq was adapted into the Clint Eastwood movie that is now up for six Oscars including best picture, maintained that he wanted the money to go to support struggling military families. After Kyle and a friend were shot and killed in 2013 by a veteran Kyle was helping, The New York Times retold this widely known point of view: “Though his book became a best-seller, he never collected money from it, friends said, donating the proceeds to the families of two friends and fallen SEAL members, Ryan Job and Marc Lee.”

Yet today, with more than $6 million banked from the American Sniper franchise (boosted by the sale of more than 2 million books) and millions more on the way as the Warner Bros. film nears $400 million worldwide, a quiet dispute festers over who is entitled to that windfall. At the center of the discord is Kyle’s widow, Taya, 40, who is alleged to have ignored her late husband’s wishes and withheld money from the bereaved families he publicly had promised to support.

Neither Lee’s family nor Kelly Job, the widow of Ryan Job, have filed lawsuits, and none is expected. Legal experts say that because Kyle’s promise was verbal and he died without a will, prevailing in a court case would be unlikely. Sources also say Kelly Job, who lives in California with a daughter, and Lee’s mother and two siblings are unwilling to be seen taking legal action against a celebrated widow. (Both families declined comment.)

But the Lees and Jobs are said to be upset that they haven’t received even a small share of the proceeds from Sniper after Kyle died. They maintain, according to sources close to the families, that Kyle’s wishes are not being fulfilled. In fact, just days before he was killed (and less than a week after the official publication of American Sniper), Kyle donated about $56,000 to the Lee and Job families as well as to a charity supporting veterans. At a memorial service for Kyle in Dallas footage of which is shown at the end of Sniper), Lee’s mother, Debbie, president of the nonprofit America’s Mighty Warriors — whom Kyle describes in the book as “almost a surrogate mother to the other members of our platoon”— recalled the moment she learned of Kyle’s largesse. “I was speechless, overwhelmed and in tears,” Lee told the audience of 7,000 mourners. “Chris didn’t publish that book for an income or to be famous. He hated the spotlight. Chris did that for his teammates.”

Taya Kyle hasn’t spoken publicly about proceeds from the book and movie, but she was pressed about her willingness to pay the Jobs and Lees in a separate business dispute. In August, Taya sued Christopher Kirkpatrick, a Dallas lawyer who had represented both her and her husband in connection with several business deals, including a company called Craft International that Chris Kyle had co-founded.

Did they "allegedly" get a lawyer?   lol

So to be clear - who are you calling a liar in this case?  veteran?  family of a veteran?

I'm beginning to think Chris Kyle wasn't that bright

Quote
“Chris Kyle was sitting in the driver’s seat on his telephone and he texted Chad Littlefield, sitting right next to him, he texted him, ‘This dude is straight up nuts,’” Moore told jurors.

Littlefield reportedly responded, “He’s right behind me, watch my six,” using the military slang for “cover me from behind.”

If you thought a guy was "straight up nuts" would you give him access to a loaded gun and turn your back on him

I sure as shit wouldn't

WTF ?

Taya Kyle, widow of 'American Sniper' Chris Kyle, attends Oscars
‘I didn’t think I had the energy to show up ... let alone be presentable,’ she writes
by Dylan Stableford

The widow of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle walked the red carpet Sunday night to attend the Academy Awards, where "American Sniper," the film about her late husband, is nominated for several awards, including Best Picture.

Kyle posted an emotional note on Facebook ahead of the ceremony.

"I didn’t think I had the energy to show up at the Oscars, let alone be presentable,” Taya Kyle wrote on Facebook Sunday afternoon. "I don’t like whining and I believe in the power of recognizing blessings even when the chips are down. I wanted to support everyone who made this movie representing real veteran families."

She thanked Warner Brothers, a studio she called "exceptional to work with in every aspect" and a "fairy [godmother] for a regular woman who has kids [and] a murder trial for her beloved and dear friend" to handle at once, adding that she has been "honestly exhausted."

Chris Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield were killed on Feb. 2, 2013, at a Texas shooting range.

Bradley Cooper, who portrays Chris Kyle in the film, is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.

"He absolutely got it right," Taya Kyle said of Cooper in a red carpet interview. "I'm so grateful for everything that went into this movie. ... This is something [Chris] would be proud of."

"My kids love Bradley," she recently told NPR. "It is a very deep experience, and we have a tremendous amount of gratitude. And my kids ... don't even truly understand, I think, all of this, or the magnitude of this. They know him as the guy that played soccer with them, or the guy that has them laughing hysterically."

Earlier this month, Taya Kyle testified at the trial of her husband's accused killer, Eddie Ray Routh, in Stephenville, Texas.

Last week, the judge in Routh's trial reminded jurors to avoid any media coverage but did not ban them from watching the Oscars. Closing arguments are scheduled to begin Monday.

"I find myself in a surreal position," Taya Kyle continued. "Like Cinderella who scrubs the floors but has a fairy Godmother (Warner Brothers) who got me on a plane and had a dress and jewelry and even the shoes and Spanx waiting for me.

"And so it is," she added. "I am here. To represent my husband, military families and the beautiful people who put more than they had to to make this movie happen. I have a red eye flight scheduled to get me back for the trial on Monday morning. I am praying the impending ice storm in Texas doesn’t inhibit a safe trip home."

The US TV broadcast of this year's Oscars ceremony on Sunday scored the event's lowest ratings in six years, averaging 36.6 million.

They were down by 16% on last year's ratings, according to Nielsen figures published by Variety.

First-time host Neil Patrick Harris received lukewarm reviews, while some have blamed the drop on a lack of nominations for films with mass appeal.

Two-time Oscar-nominee and French speaker Bradley Cooper was at the White House for a February 11 state dinner with French President François Hollande. Cooper met with Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett to discuss ways he could help promote Obamacare sign-ups.

It goes on to break down the numbers as the hits skyrocketed thanks to his efforts.

This was pretty much a no brainer of a verdict.

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — The next batch of Chris Kyle memorial ball caps won’t arrive at the Grand Entry Western Store here until mid-March, but a prepaid waitlist for them already has close to 100 names.

“We have people calling every day or coming in the store,” said Sierra Jones, an employee of the clothing store.

They expect the demand to increase after a jury here found an ex-Marine guilty late Tuesday in the shooting deaths of Kyle, the legendary Navy SEAL “American Sniper,” and his best friend, Chad Littlefield, two years ago.

Lana Karlberg, a store manager, said she wasn’t surprised that it only took the jury a little more than two hours to reject Eddie Ray Routh’s insanity defense and return a verdict.

“Most people around here, if you talk to them, would say that they think he's guilty,” Karlberg said. “He had bragged to people about shooting them and killing them. It's all there.”

The trial was closely followed in this rural town of 19,000, but also drew international attention in part because of the Oscar-winning blockbuster film based on Kyle’s memoir of his four tours in Iraq.

A cold front arrived overnight, blanketing the area’s pastures and historic streets in a scenic snow. Kyle’s widow found it the perfect time to thank the community on her husband’s Facebook page.

“What a poetic morning when the snow is melting and the winter is thawing out promising a new day,” Taya Kyle wrote. “God Bless the Jury And good people of Stephenville, Texas!!”

Texas politicians also pounced on the opportunity to applaud the verdict.

“JUSTICE!” newly elected Republican Gov. Greg Abbott tweeted within minutes of the decision.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, also took to Twitter, saying “Hope & pray this verdict brings some peace & closure to friends, family & loved ones of Chris Kyle & Chad Littlefield.”

The Kyle memorial caps ordered by Grand Entry come from Hooey Brands, an Austin-based clothing line popular with the rodeo crowd. Fifteen percent of sales are donated to support veteran’s organizations. The custom hats, which Hooey sells through a number of outlets, raised $30,000 in 2014, according to its website.

An American flag and the Kyle quote “It’s our duty to serve those who serve us” cover the bottom of the cap’s bill. Kyle, who recorded the most kills of any U.S. sniper, had retired from the military and had been helping other veterans deal with combat-related stress and mental health issues.

“A lot of people around here support the military,” Karlberg said. “So it hit close to home for people. A small-town pride thing, I guess. Not just because he was in the military, but he was a war hero, he had the most sniper kills and he had written a book about his experiences. He went out and he helped people that were having trouble coming back from war.”

Five hours after publishing it on Wednesday, Taya Kyle’s Facebook post had received more than 80,000 likes and shares and 2,600 comments. In the third paragraph, she speaks directly to her late husband.

“Chris, you are the love of my life,” she writes. “You live on in my heart. You always will. I hope we all live lives that make you proud.”

Routh, a Marine corporal who specialized as a small-arms technician and repairman, served in Haiti cleaning up bodies after the earthquake and in Iraq but never saw combat. Since leaving the service, Routh had been hospitalized for what was described in court as post traumatic stress disorder and psychosis. Kyle and Littlefield, who didn’t know Routh, had taken him to the remote gun range near Stephenville as a kind of therapy, the jury was told.

For 752 days Routh has been locked away at the small county jail on the northeast edge of town. That will change in the coming days when deputies transfer him to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, where he will serve life in prison without parole.

Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant said he’s ready for Routh to have a new home.

“Once they are sentenced, sometimes they feel they have nothing else to live for, and there’s always the possibility that they could not only hurt themselves but even a guard,” Bryant told Yahoo News, adding that the jail had no problems with Routh after the verdict.

Retired Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, a friend of Kyle's and subject of the film “Lone Survivor,” attended Tuesday's hearing as a show of support. Luttrell, also a Texan, reveled in the thought of Routh’s reception in prison.

“Justice served for Chris and the Littlefield family,” Luttrell posted to Facebook after the verdict. “To Eddie Ray Routh, you thought you had PTSD before .?? Wait till the boys in TDC Find out you killed a TX hero.”
