Massively overrated, IMO.   It was a good story, but definitely not anything insanely special.  It was all about the the time it took to make the movie - neat, but didn't make a ground breaking story or anything.

Birdman is nothing special either.

Follow the Oscars for enough years you begin to realise what a circle jerk they are, rarely are the films nominated the best films of the year for ENTERTAINMENT, and are largely forgotten about with a year or two.

Anne Thompson's review for American Sniper said it was a movie made for weak minded steak eaters.

I guess being a fake intellect includes being an America hating liberal douchenozzle.

Ideally the films are nominated for their artistic merit rather than popular acclaim.

Academy Award nominations and winners are voted on by the members of the Academy. In other words, it is an award voted on by movie industry peers. With an Oscar, a box office flop can end up wining best picture. It is not the People's Choice Awards.

Having said this, there is some who feel the voting is convoluted and does not always lend itself to awarding the best of the best.

Wasn't all that thrilled with it, either. Zero interest in seeing Birdman, so can't comment. Foxcatcher was my favorite this year; but from the nominees, I'd pick Whiplash.

It couldn't possibly be him, no one invented Dbol until the mid 50s.  It sprang like Athena from the skull of a doctor in York, Pa.  No one had ever heard of any drug that could help build muscle before that exact moment.

Birdman was perfect, featured some stunning dialogue scenes, but it's definitely not for everyone.

My top picks for 2014 are Interstellar, Gone girl and Birdman.
Guardians of the Galaxy and Kingsman are a must-see if you are more into easy-going movies.

Gonegirl was ok.  The chick was spot on but Affleck was totally overshadowed.  His range of emotions are 'I have to take a shit' to 'I just took a shit'

Awards have changed recently.  Before when you had a best actor and best director that meant best movie.  not anymore.  They are trying to spread the awards to promote more films.  The movie industry is lagging and the Oscars are nothing more than a way to promote the films for more money.
How does Dallas Buyer's club, have best screenplay, best actor and best supporting actor but doesn't get best movie?  Doesn't make fucking sense.
