I used to train at a hardcore gym in Louisiana with plenty of competitive bodybuilders.
One laid back dude , never competed in contests, BUT did a basic contest prep each year.
As a veteran of several contests, I didn't understand why he never competed despite getting ripped.
One day he worked in with me doing cable crossovers, so I asked him.
His answer changed my thinking forever.
The conversation went like this:
Me- "Hey, you are really starting to get ripped."
Him - " Thanks, I'm doing my annual fat loss diet and routine."
Me- " I see that, and you should compete."
Him - " No, not me. I'm happy to just watch you other guys compete."
Me - " Ok, but why are dieting and trying to get ripped, if you aren't going to compete in a contest?"
Him - " Each year my wife and I go to a luxury resort in the Virgin Islands. I want to look good out on that beach and in the pictures we take on the trip. My wife is younger then me and I think she's pretty hot, so I need to keep up with her, if you know what I mean ( chuckles)"
Me - " Hmmm, that makes sense, BUT why don't you want to compete in a contest after getting ripped for the vacation ? "
Him - " I pay good $$$ to live nice when we stay at that luxury resort. No offense, but it never made sense to me to pay $$$ to put on a show for someone else. (big smile :D) That's like a hooker paying you , for letting her give you blowjob."
This conversation occurred in 1997, a couple years after my last contest. While I've toyed with the idea of competing again, I never did .
Within a couple years of this conversation, I started going on cruises and resorts for the first time. From that point on, paying to get wined and dined always made a lot more sense then spending $$$ to compete in contests.
While I personally understand the motivation to compete in bodybuilding, it stopped making sense after this conversation.
Far better to get in good condition, for your own personal satisfaction.

Never understood guys that do cycles for vacation trips. I guest the pictures preserve their image on social media so when they are out of shape the majority of the year their image is there to repeatedly show everyone. I remember a guy I worked with that had a crumbled up picture of himself he kept in his wallet to show people of him competing. The problem was he was fat and pudgy as he whipped out the picture. He always says to everyone I was natural for that contest. Bull, I've been in the gym with many a day and he cannot improve his horrible body. I bet a cycle or two he would make drastic changes.

Huge difference in being lean or comp lean. I hear it often I should compete but fuck all that shit man. Being depleted and feeling flat sucks ass for the "reward" at steak.
Then the whole rebound thing after, meh... Also would never see myself in a posing suite. The last 2 weeks, it's best to not even work, just be on lock down.
It's just too much. And having done 3 shows is not a Vet of competing Howard, it's starting to get to know your body I'd say.

Good post and you're 100% right, the last, extra 10% for contest prep is where you get 90% of suck.
I did a lot more then 3 shows myself, but I honestly wish I had done fewer.
The feeling on having your "life" on hold until after the contest was a waste .
I wasted a lot of time and energy doing too many shows back in the day.
I wished I had competed less, and enjoyed life more.
Oh well, live and learn. ::)
Whenever I get the "urge" to compete, will re read this, lol... Seems most say what you're saying here. If I knew I could move onto higher levels and clean house, would be an option. But I'd just be one of those guys spending everything he has to be "in the mix"
Fuck, just looked outside and it's f'in snowing hard fuckk....

Everyday 10%: look good, feel good, pull pussy
Contest 5%: look emaciated, feel like shit, couldn't get an erection if you life depended on it.
But the rewards! Oh yes, who can forget the plastic trophy and the accolades from the...uhhh...women. Scratch that last part. The trophy, the plastic trophy. Yeah.

What I see from guys who do shows is they kinda become local hero's if you will, people flock to them for advice and gear, last word of most importance as we all know this shit ain't cheap and you need guys as customers to support the bill.
NO other way...

That used to happen, but now pure hardcore bodybuilding is not that popular.
Far better to be some Cross fit trainer or MMA fighter, etc.
The cross fit, gym trainer types are the more frequent now and tend to interact with more pussy in the gym.
I need to work on that aspect, lol...
I just can't undo myself from how I am though, it's super serious game/asshole face and hard to change, lol...

1st Place!!!! Nothing beats winning. All the suffering and sacrifice you do for this shit, all the cardio, shots, posinig.....to hear your name called as the winner makes it all worth it

I competed quite a few times when I was younger and while I don't regret it those were different times. No one spent thousands of dollars on drugs. Today with all the drugs, you're spending thousands of dollars to literally step on stage for less than five minutes.

when I saw my buddy's posing routine (45 seconds) I could not believe that's all they get for the crazy sacrifice.

Some people enjoy being competitive, some people enjoy a challenge..probably stems from childhood athletics, why do people run marathons?? Its satisfying and rewarding to set a goal and accomplish it, by testing yourself and seeing what you're really made of. You should definitely not do it to impress anyone, if you enjoy training and seeing your body transform..to me is exciting.

Good post.
I've gotten a lot of great memories and enjoyed contest prep when other guys in the gym were doing the same thing.

Absolutely! I enjoyed the training and hardship more that the day of the actual show.

People do run marathons to be competitive and the challenge. They also do it for health and maybe a spin off of childhood athletics. Drug bodybuilding has nothing to do with that. It has to do with someone who is insecure who will risk health to get compliments on being a man because of his cosmetic temporary muscles.
