I've trained maybe a total of 3 weeks this year - I'm going crazy.
Hurt my back just before Christmas - couldn't move, couldn't train.
Finally get some mobility back, head back to the gym, the flu hits Germany and every second person is in bed. I teach 14 different groups of people each week which puts me right in the firing line if there's a virus going around. I usually manage to avoid these things but I got hit badly this year.
It's now coming up to 4 weeks since I contracted the flu. I'm back at work but even walking the stairs is leaving me out of breath. I need to do something.
Anyone else been sick and found a workaround? I'm a little hesitant to push it too quickly because I lost a friend in my 20's whose heart gave out on him when he went back to training just after an illness.
I can't just sit on my arse eating chips though.

Everyone and their cousin is getting a stomach virus in SoCal. I'm expecting it to hit me any day now. Hoping for Epic Leans from the runny shits.
-
Some guy in my area at work is hacking up chunks of lung butter all day long.
I expect to get his F'in germs any day now... Stay the feck home if sick...
-
Tired of people with colds saying they have the flu. If you have the flu you will be in bed completely shot for 10 to 14 days. After that it will take the same amount of time to regain your strength. That's why so many people die from the flu. Sounds like you had the flu.
Best thing you can do is to get the flu shot. It isn't a cure all but they load that syringe up with a couple of the strains they predict will hit that year. Also wash you hands carefully every time you hit the bathroom to wash bacteria and viruses off your hands and if you can't alcohol them.

You need to eat a high saturated fat diet, from animal sources, to maintain a powerful immune system. Take plenty of lecithin and Vitamin C, too, and you won't get colds and flu.
-
Yep - I ignored the flu shot because I rarely catch it. Once every 5 years or so I get hit. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!
Powerlifter66 - it pisses me off when people come to work when they're sick. That's how I got it. Fuck - if you're sick, stay home. I've had about 5 students reappear after being sick, only to disappear again because they came back to work too early (and probably because someone else coughed and spit on them when they came back).
I haven't been this skinny fat in years. It's getting me down. At least my back is better.

You forgot b12 injections and casein before bed to stay in an anabolic state.

@_aj_: High saturated fat diet is great for brain function too. You really should try it, because you desperately need help in that department.

Same in NY. Everyone was getting it. I got it a few weeks ago. Spent 2 days on the toilet with explosive butt piss,, plus I threw up 3x's. First time I've ever thrown up sober.

Sublingual B12 works for me. Casein is awful stuff that no one should ever use, unless you are stranded somewhere, and starving.

interesting, wonder why there is no report about this in ny and socal?

Most of my HS athletes and their parents and my son. My wife and I haven't had anything.....yet..

I was sick like a month ago for the first time in 2 years almost. I can't think of any reason for the lack of flu/fever until now than the fact that I started to consume more meat and onions. Prior to that I was sick at least 3 times a year any time my training started to feel really smooth. Even my girlfriend got all sorts of flus and whatever, I never got it from her.

the jewish god is punishing you for not following the torah ;D ;D

Gyms are among the worst places for contracting sickness...
-
I rarely drink these days. Until I get sick. Then I just sip bourbon for those 2 days while I'm sick. Passes the time, feels awesome. Just one glass can last a whole day when you're not eating from illness.
-
I have been sick at the beginning of the year and it costs me alot. I wanted to go pass a test, miles away from where I live but couldn't and felt like a weak shit, puking. I was tied to bed, nearly cried because of what I missed. It feels terrible when you have all the time to get sick but only get sick when YOU DONT NEED TO.
As absurd life is, two days after I felt a bit good.
-
Yeah a few times the last few months. finally broke down and went to the doc and been fine since.
-
The last time I had the flu was a couple of years ago. I just wanted a bullet in the head I hurt so much. I remember it would take me hours to get up to get to the toilet, then when I was stood in there I had no fucking idea where I was or what I was doing there.
If I could never have the flu again that would be great thanks.

Yea do this is you want to clog your arteries and put yourself into an early grave you dumb fucker. I guess every first world nation's doctors are all wrong with their warnings.
-
I'm sick all the time... 1 kid in daycare, 1 kid in school, wife works in a hospital, and I work outside all year round. It's like the perfect storm of germs.

Yes, every first world doctor is wrong if they warn against high fat diet, and latest research proves that it is healthy, and that warnings against it were all incorrect from the get go.

It's the Nano's in the air their spraying...Respiratory problems all over the country in America...

I work on a ship with 2500 passengers and 900 crew..people constantly coughing/sneezing germs everywhere. .the only thing that saves me is the fact that I work outside all day..breathing in that fresh ocean air and taking in that warm Hawaiian sun does wonders for general health and wellnes.

A while ago I read about some new research according to which getting sick is actually a sign of a good immune system.
Anyone know what I'm talking about? Can't find the article.
I haven't been sick in like 15 years and I don't take care of my health, eat like shit etc.
-
I feel bad for you all. I never get the flu. -Never had a flu shot either. It's been a long time since I've been sick. What I am most susceptible to if bronchial pneumonia. I've had it many times throughout my life. It knocks you out for quite awhile.
I generally don't worry about germs. The main preventative measure I take to not catch something is to wash my hands very often. I am convinced that too much germ aversion actually is not a good thing. It is better to let our bodies build up an immunity to germs. Too sterile an environment doesn't allow for this to happen.

Do you still train? If so, how? It's been 4 weeks now and my cat can knock me over I'm so weak. Haven't felt like this in years.
-
I was sick the whole month of January. Caught a cold, got over it, caught another cold.
Three colds I caught. Then I was left with a nasty cought. Had that fucker for over two
Months. Finally after three doctor visits, he gave me a inhaler that finnaly knocked out
The cough. I lost 15 pounds, a lot of muscle.
Can't seem to be moviated lately. Life sucks!!

If it's just coming on... Sore throat, stuffiness... Yes I still train and then see how I feel the next morning. If better, I don't miss. If it gets worse or I am full blown sick, I don't train. I can usually just miss a day or two. The days you are borderline and still train can suck sometimes, but a lot of times a good sweat actually helps.
Good luck.

You may be doing this backward. It might be more productive to take break as soon as you feel something coming on and knock it out before it takes hold. Resting gives your body the opportunity to put up a fight.
-
This thing helps if you keep it up and do it everyday. Use it while taking a hot shower. Also don't waste your money on the salt packets...Just use regular Kosher salt...

Nah this works for me...

Nah this works for me...
Well, I am not an expert (doctor) but as i mentioned earlier, I almost never get sick. If I feel something coming on, I medicate with some alcohol and rest. So far, this has worked well for me. I do have a certain level of experience since I am approaching 71 years of age this year and surprisingly have maintained a fairly high level of fitness....could just be good genetics though.
-
Everyone is different. Of course rest helps best... But that means longer times without workouts. So my system keeps me working out even if just slightly under the weather... Your advice is sound but his question was basically can you train if getting sick. Different interpretations.
