Use to do them a lot but now that I don't my elbow pain has gone away and I'm a lot stronger in my other tricep exercises.

Just started doing them. people who complain about elbow pain are ego lifters. WAAAHHH i dont wanna look like a pussy so lemme bust my elbows up by loading plates on a bar.

What I do is start with 5 lbs on each side and increase by 5 lbs for 4-5 sets. I alternate these with over head cable extensions each week.

ahh yes cause your elbows get weaker as you get stronger...makes so much sense.

your joints hurt when they assist in the load moving...plain and simple. Most 'vets" are plain retard ego lifters. How many gym "Vets" are really just gym rat ego lifters id say 90% of them.

I prefer lying tricep extensions myself.

I do them from time to time leaning against a scott pad like some of the pictures shown. I go all the way down and I use between 85lbs and 100lbs. I could use a lot more if I short stroked the movement but I try to do exercises in the hardest way so the muscles get hit and not a prop to my ego. Never said I was the strongest guy. Great movement. I alternate using a single dumbbell with two hands and the ez bar.

IMO, this is the best exercise for developing the tris near the elbow. Definitely don't want to use a lot of weight as this is strictly an isolation movement.

so many other ways to target the muscle why do something that ups the chances of injury?

Nothing has really changed in the last 40 years. You just have to re-teach these types of exercises to the newer (younger) "machine" generation so they know what it's like to actually train with weights.

Just an honest question??  How can you do these without a training partner?
When you hit muscle failure and can't re-rack, you end up dropping the bar behind your back...

Aren't these just tri extensions (or skullcrushers as some call them) or is there a difference? Thought a lot of people do them. I do them with either straight bar or hold farther out on a cambered/ez bar (a la Jeff Rodriguez). Puts less stress on elbows/wrists, IMO.

Gotcha, I've always done my "skulls" behind the head (at least since JRod used to post on here if not before). Just assumed that most were shortchanging themselves by only going to head. I guess I just had them confused a bit in that I didn't know there were specific names for both. Thanks!

Pretty damn strong, but I believe it's key to keep your elbow close to your head. I also pause at the bottom for a second.

My fave tricep movement by a mile, done seated... It is a movement that can realy hit the long head and add a lot of size and volume to your arms, will also stress your elbows big time... Your triceps can push heavy weight, for me doing these too light and your missing out.

I use a cable version now, if you have an adjustable hight pulley, I set it just below shoulder hight and step out  it, great stretch and pump, not as good as heavy ez bar, but as close as you can safely get.

When my left shoulder went dodgy on me, tricep movements where my elbow was above my shoulder were very painful. It's getting better, and I am adding more of these types of movements back. But I am very cautious.

AJ, same here... My right shoulder, elbow, knee and lower back are totally fecked up all of a sudden.
for 3+ weeks, I'm a limping/gimping old fuck.
Getting better and putting some exercises back into play, just very light and cautious.

Try them with a freight strap between your arms, less stress for your elbows and way harder for your tris.

Yup.  I think it was Birdsong that trashed the stuffing out of Gold's one morning when someone (Waller?  ;D) put a picture of the Bird having his feathers "ruffled" by another
(p)Ornithologist "enthusiast".   ;D ;D

Or something to that effect.  I think he was banned from Gold's for a while.  ;D
Regardless, handsome young man and a great physique.  If he found God in earnest, I am happy for him and his family.

Back on topic.  I will give these another try next arm day.
