Title: working outside?
Post by: Howard on April 03, 2015, 07:03:42 AM
I've worked out with plenty of guys that often said this;
" I'd hate to work behind a desk and  glad I get to work outside/ outdoors?"

Ok, I understand wanting to be outside on a nice day, but what about all the cold, hot , rainy days?
Plus, what makes working at a desk so terrible and manual labor so enjoyable? ???

I work outside every day... All day. For 15 years now. It's awesome in the spring, summer, and fall. Not so much in the dead of winter. BUT you do get immunity to the weather as it goes on... I call it winter skin. I. The first week of winter you freeze, but then unless it is 0, 20 or 30 is like nothing. Windy days suck though.

I worked in a paint store for ten years prior... Being outside is better.

Thanks for the reply.
My bro-in-law has  a degree in chemistry but owns this huge tree farm and landscape business.
He loves doing outside work with  back hoe and shovel.

From a young age, I always thought inside " book/desk work" was easy and outside chores were hard and tedious.

Not sure there is a simple answer on this?

Usually if you are outside you are more independent and do not have to answer to anyone.

I stare to my monitor (actually three) for the most of the day. I love it, no way in hell I'd like to go work outside.

Thats because you are lazy and weak and would not know what to do when you go outside.  Plus, you probably live on postage sized land and in some sort of block apartment.  Why would you go outside when all you would find is a parking lot?

you get much more exercise outside though.. i saw a Documentary on TV about it and they said if you work in an office every hour you should walk up and down some stairs for 5 mins non stop...seriously  :) because they said just doing say 1 hour of exercise in the evening like most do has not got the same benefits to your health and in particular your intern organs. was intresting.

That's because I have brains and don't have to work a manual labour. No, I don't have a personal lawn near my home (but there's a very nice shared yard and very cozy place in general). I don't need a house with a big land around it now at all.

I work at home, I leave my place whenever I need, for some shopping, working out, etc... Spending a whole day in office wothout moving much is generally a very bad practice regarding health, I agree.

I worked outside for years when I was a self employed builder and it was great, especially through the summer and if you were on a job near a busy street or a university To watch the young whores going by, (most) customers will try and keep you happy and make you cups of tea all day and bring you food, sluts will break their neck to crack on with you as they assume own business = loaded, on rainy days you don't even bother leaving the house. It was absolute heaven when times were good and if it was guaranteed income if do it again in an instant

There was a study a few years ago that said basically if you spend all day sitting (regardless of whether you exercise or not) - your life expectancy will be shorter, compared to these who stand more. They couldn't really figure out why it is like that.

No need to read the study, I know it's right. This is common sense. When you sit, you slowly go into "off" mode. From there, you slouch and so on. Not as sharp mentally either, it all follows...

The one group that lived a good long life in the past were monks, royals and scholars. 100% truth.
Every notice that guys like Issac Newton lived much longer then the avg hard working slob in the 1600's-1800's.

The avg pyramid builder-worker died from exhaustion from working long hours OUTSIDE before age 30.

You make a good point we call all relate to! Slow down the pyramid building to prolong one's life. I'll try, as pyramid building is one of my favorite things to do as I also get to play dress up! Just kinda unfair I've been on the receiving end of all the bad possible scenario's but sure as shit, I know my day is coming!

For centuries working outside or manual labor was considered undesirable because it often exposed one to injury, illness, and premature death; the pay was also correspondingly low.  That is less true today, but the legacy of that association is all around us.  Different strokes for different folks obviously, but I work in a corner office with two widows and love it.  If I were parked in a cubicle that might not be so much fun, but my office is about the size of a small two car garage.  I get outside plenty after work and on the weekends: working on my yard, riding my bike, walking the dog, etc.  When I want to be outside during the work day, I can walk across the way to a cafeteria, a restaurant, the library or any other building on campus.  As you get older, you may conclude that working outside is overrated.  Sun exposure, precipitation, and temperature extremes can get old real fast! 8)

They say "sitting is the new cancer."  Workday sitting should be balanced with a lot of physical activity.

Prefer to work inside a warm nice office just sitting on my ass. In fact I wouldn't even want to work outside with manual labour on nice sunny days. White skin under long sun exposure ages your skin prematurely. Also manual Labour generally is just a pain in the ass especially if you have to do it over 8 hours every day. I would have no desire to go to the gym after work.

I agree that being outside is fun when the weather is nice and you're doing something fun.

Working outside make u tired as fuck! Sun kill you! Wind kill you! Cold kill you! Rain kill u!

Then u have this noisy fucking sound all the time if your into contruction or infrastructure shit...

And u will look 10 years older than you actually are!

Doing WORKOUT/CARDIO outside is heaven! Fresh air!

I'm an adrenaline junkie, I know I could never work indoors at an office job, or going to work to the same place for 20-30 years ,it would drive me nuts.

Pros

Weather.
Working  on different projects (job sites)   every 3 -4 months.
Trash talk without fear of repercussion .
Decent pay

Cons

Weather
Hard work

There are exceptions, of course, but in my experience the people who say this the loudest tend to be guys who could never get or keep the kind of office/desk job they would enjoy.  Here is a perfect example:

i'm going to be 45 and i still don't have a real career?!
http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=281208.0

He held "peon jobs as production assistants and office assistants working my ass off 12 hour days dealing with 99 percent assholes..."  He got fired and became so bitter on the office experience that he "could not imagine being an office worker, cubicle, wearing a suit everyday kind of guy, how horrible is that..."  yet he is "tired of being poor and struggling and now with the economy the way it is nationwide, i'm searching for answers!!!!!!!!!!"

He should be working outside. ::)
