There was a documentary about this a few months back. Worth watching:

Her size and athleticism probably became exaggerated as her legend grew. The very poor people of a small Eastern European village 100 years ago obviously knew nothing of black people so it's obvious their reaction to seeing one for the first time would be tragic.
