The much longer prison sentences and death sentences for killing cops has always annoyed me too. Their lives are not more valuable than anybody else and they get paid to confront potentially dangerous situations so they know the risks going in.

Civilization requires moral guidelines and justice to function. Murder is wrong. It makes no difference if its a cop or a citizen. The rule of law has been breaking down systemically in this country for years. Corporate raiders plunder the Citizens wealth and nothing happens. Politicians sell out the people and profit from the laws they create and nothing happens. Wars are no longer moral or Constitutional. They are just us using force to control resources. People abuse welfare and other social programs created to help societal cohesion. The police force no longer supports and protects Citizens. Everyone cheats on their taxes.
The rule of law has failed in this country from top to bottom. It's part of the cycle that all empires go through and it will get worse before it collapses and is reborn.

The reason cops and firefighters get mentioned when they get killed in the line of duty more so than the citizen (not in all cases) is because the public for the most part, by and large understand these men and women took a job that requires them to put themselves in danger more often than the citizen in order to provide a safer neighborhood. When they get killed doing that job, the average normal citizen feels a sense of loss as well because they know the officer(s) were there for them. They appreciate that. It's really something that cop haters will never understand. But that answers your question as to why they get an article in the paper when they are killed. Contact your local paper if you have an issue with it.

the reason.. cops are public servants and protectors of the innocent. They are required to go towards the danger and in doing so must venture into areas many would not go. The rational people understand this and so to afford police additional protection, they make it a severe crime to assault or kill a police officer. Makes perfect sense. They are the thin blue line :)

A good cop? This guy grew up in a sundown town in Long Island where people refused to sell a house to a person of color until recently.
He was part of a LOOOONG line of white NYPD pigs that refuse to live within the 5 boroughs because they do not want to live near a fucking single black family, and yet gets into a line of business that puts them right smack in the center of neighborhoods where African Americans are the majority or, at least, non-whites are a minority.

When I was in a life or death situation the cops took their little time to respond to my 911 calls. Not only did they show up late to the scene, they didn't even try to locate the people that pulled a gun out on me.
