Beat a 50 year old out of shape Holmes. Prime Holmes would've exposed Mike worse than Buster Douglas ever did.

Agreed....one of the best HW jabs ever.

amazing jab, , super fast, accurate and punishing
and underrated hard right cross/uppercut, and combination puncher
tremendous chin, recuperative ability and HEART, to hit back when hurt
great figher

Holmes was 38 years old and only 3 years removed from being the heavyweight champion. He was not 50 years old. Tyson was in his late 30's, fat, and only fighting to pay his tax bills when he fought Lennox Lewis in 2002. Nobody gave a shit about excuses then so I don't give a shit about Larry Holmes's excuses now. I have no doubt that the 1988 Tyson would have demolished any version of Larry Holmes.

Larry:
"You can all kiss me where the sun don't shine...and since we are on HBO...that would be my big black behind!"

Holmes was still good when he fought Tyson but clearly past his best.

Tyson was on prescription drugs and drinking living the party life by the time he fought Buster. I will give Buster this. He fought the fight of his life. Remember his mother died right before the fight. Buster gave it his all. Regarding Larry Holmes being 38 in boxing is really old. It's not bodybuilding.

Larry Holmes was 127 years old when they fought.
He was Cuban. So, like, that's 151, give or take?
-
Larry Holmes was 127 years old when they fought.
Exactly, In his prime Tyson would have had his hands full with Holmes.

holmes still lives in easton pa, see him at sporting events around the area often, always seems like a friendly guy...always remember the first time he actually got knocked down in a fight, didn't know how to react .... got up too quick and went flying into the ropes... recovered at the count of 7 and went on to win the fight. in his prime no one could get through his jab best in boxing history...

except lewis was 37..less than a year 'younger' than tyson.
and holyfield was 34 when he fought a 30 year old tyson.
tyson was only fat when he fought douglas.

Tyson was in much better condition when he fought Douglas than when he fought Lewis. Get your eyes checked.

FFS, athletes will peak and decline at different ages. Tyson was a shot fighter by the time he fought Lewis.
Lewis peaked late in his career.

One of the greatest press conferences in boxing -
.
Also Larry was quite the pitch man -

and singer -

Larry was really feeling that last one.

Not a great fight, but one of my favorites, this was the one that drove Howard Cosell out of boxing. Gosh, Cobb could take a beating -

Lead to a pretty funny roast, you can see genuine affection there -

Lewis and Holyfield were both late bloomers. Nowhere around when Tyson unified the Heavyweight title. Neither of them spent 3 plus years in prison away from boxing either.

Lewis definitely was a late bloomer.
Tyson's peaked in the mid to late 80's, Holyfield in the early to mid 90's and Lewis in the late 90's.
This is why I don't understand when some morons bring up the similar ages of Lewis and Tyson when they fought. Their ages are irrelevant.
Lewis was in and around his boxing prime at the time of the fight while Tyson was well over a decade past his.

Word.
Also, Holyfield was a fucking cruiserweight when Tyson won the belt. He was small as fuck. Later he roided up and became a headbutting-ass heavyweight.
Fuck both of those nikkas.
-
In my opinion, Larry had the greatest jab of all time!
-
Quick, name one good prime heavyweight fighter Tyson ever beat.

Why wasn't the May/Pac fight 15 rounds?

Championship fights haven't been 15 rounds since the 80s bro.
-
Why wasn't the May/Pac fight 15 rounds?
The change to 12 rounds being the longest a fight could last came in 1983 - 1988 or so. It was long supposed that the majority of nasty permanent damages to a boxer came about in those last 3 rounds mostly, and after the Mancini / Kim fight the push got stronger to stop them at 10 or 12. There was also support for this from the Tv channels, as it was easier to program around a 12 rounder.

i agree with you. and a prime time holmes would have beaten tyson at his best.
holmes was used to getting in the ring with greatness all time sparring with Ali, he wouldn't have been intimidated by tyson at all and he learned from a master how to plan for an opponent. by the time he got in the ring with tyson it was just for a payday.
