The story I've heard for years is that Shatner is very afraid of dying.
He supposedly doesn't attend funerals for this reason.
I think I remember reading about this in the unauthorized biography about his life some years ago.

He saw himself, Nimoy (Spock) and Kelly (McCoy) as the three stars and the other four as supporting players.
The other four (Nichols, Takei, Koenig and Doohan) wanted to be elevated to equal status in everyway (storylines, press and salary) with the other three.
