Guns N' Roses will forever be remembered for "The Spaghetti Incident?". Three studio albums and one covers album makes them the greatest rock band of all time. LOL

Well, if Gun N' Roses' "Appetite For Destruction" is so much better than Def Leppard's "Hysteria" album why hasn't it outsold it? I think you'll find the worldwide sales figures for both albums are roughly the same.

I would like to see the original line-up of Guns N' Roses try do a live performance of "Appetite For Destruction" as good as Def Leppard's live performance of "Hysteria" 26 years on. I've been told that Slash is a bit of a shit guitarist nowadays.

Didn't appetite sell like 30 million and hysteria 20 mil?

I love both bands!

Saw both of those album tours in concert. Both bands kicked ass and I actually like GnR album much more - but DL concert was the best I ever saw other than KISS

Who makes music like this now?

The best I've found is The Union but only a handful of their tracks really smash it (Burning Daylight is one).

A little off topic - but imo the greatest single is Powerstation - Get It On (Bang A Gong).  Incredible vocalist, guitarist, drummer.  Tony Thompson was one of THE best drummers ever IMO!  He was to be Led Zepplin's drummer in they're 1986 reunion but was injured & the plans were cancelled.

I'm serious.  They each were at the top of they're game.  Great pop/rock.  Mutt Lange whored DL out after Pyro.  They peaked then.

Saw Slash in December, his playing was as good as ever IMO. Best gig i've been to hands down.

Appetite & Somewhere in Time (Maiden) are my favourites, but that doesn't mean that it makes them everyone's. Just because you dont agree with someone's opinion doesn't give you the right to make a poor effort to dissect it and establish yours as the true consensus.

I like both Def Leppard and GnR but it's hard to compare them - two different sounds.

There is no question whatsoever though that Appetite for Destruction is the best debut rock/metal album of all time.

Def Leppard uses tons of added vocal loops and special effects during their live shows.  99% of all "live" recordings are doctored in the studio prior to their release.

Outsold it? That's weak argument when we talk about music.
But still, Deaf Leopard haven't cracked the top 10 of all time. It's AC/DC, GnR debut, Metallica self-titled, Eagles, Bon Jovi, etc.

Def Leppard - Hysteria (Full Album):

Absolutely, love that album. "pour some sugar on me" still gets me going, lol! Had no idea how much I missed this shit until I heard it recently by random. (also getting old...)

But STP is my favorite, listening to the purple album in the moment. The song "meatplow" is epic. If I were to go to the strippers and a chick appeared on stage on that song, I'd fall in love immediately (she must move properly to it, I have a vision of how this must happen)

Don't know, never a huge fan. That said, LOVED Pyromania. High and Dry, good too, probably more pure. And they kicked ass at the LA Forum in '83 (w/ Uriah Heep), my second show ever.

But I was 14. And even then I knew the latter stuff was over-processed pop.

Certainly a Zeppelin or Stones record should be on top, ain't guessing which. And, against all my gritty, blues-based sensibilities, Joshua Tree isn't far below.

SO many others to consider, though.

According to the biography I got, "None of Scott's writings were used for the album's lyrics, as the group felt it would seemingly profit from his passing. Instead, Johnson penned the album's lyrics and melodies, while the Young brothers composed the music."

From a creditable source >
"Its my opinion that the vast majority (if not all) of the albums lyrics were penned by Bon, its painfully obvious how the song writing changed after BIB , no more catchy ditties about the ups and downs of a rock n roll singers life and observations, just repetitive nonsensical blathering on, even the basic structure and sound of the band changed .Indeed I feel the heart and soul of the band died that cold Feb day in 1980 with Bon.
The ever present notebook that Bon carried with him was not found among his belongings in his ransacked flat, and even Bons mother was quoted as saying "those were Rons words" on BIB (she didn't call him Bon) , the Young brothers claim to have enclosed his lyric note book in his belongings returned to Australia which his mom said didn't happen.... I have discovered over the last 20 yrs or so that a lot of older fans of the Bon era AC-DC share my thoughts about Bons work being stolen , Brian got writing credits on BIB and the next few albums until the Youngs decided to take that over as well (he never wrote a song before AC_DC), not that either one of them can write decent lyrics! My feeling are that he was given the writing credits to keep his mouth shut..." sing this and keep your mouth shut" and you will become rich. When it became apparent that he was not a writer or musician( like Bon) the paranoid Youngs took away his writing credits. I has been speculated many times that Malcolm wanted to fire Brian in the late 80's early 90's, my guess is it didn't happen because Brian would spill the beans on the theft of Bons work. Even the record company brass in the US wanted Bon gone before the HTH album, he didn't live up to their "standards" somehow and they felt the band had more earning potential with a new lad up front. A lot of this background info as well as the list of unknowns surrounding Bon's death has really caused me to rethink his demise and question if his death was really a death by his own misadventure ...at the very least the Young's are guilty of the theft of Bon's material and future royalty earnings from his family and a fraud on all of their fans ....if his death was not completely accidental then they are certainly involved in that to some degree as well..."

IOW - How many of AC/DC's subsequenct albums came close to BIB's success?  None as we all know.  In all the songs they've recorded don't you think (1) one would at least approach YOU SHOOK ME ALL NIGHT LONG?  Of course.  Again none have.  ^That should tell you all you need to know.  Bon was known to keep a notebook w/ him at all times (unless he was drinking) & he told his mother a few days before his death in a phone call "I have at least 10 great songs ready to be recorded".  His infamous notebook was never found.  Case closed.

And contrary to legend Bon did not freeze to death.  It was very cold that night but his friend who put him in the car gave him a pillow & 2 blankets in addition to putting the safety belt on him.  He threw up during the night & being unable to move choked on his own vomit and died much like Jim Morrison.

Bon, despite his appearance & stage persona was incredibely talented, hell he played the freakin' bagpipes on ITS A LONG WAY TO THE TOP (IF YOU WANNA ROCK'N ROLL).  He excelled in other genres besides hard rock.

But why would you limit yourself to pure rock music? Things sound so much cooler when you throw electronics in the mix.
Some fossils might argue that electronic music is made by computers instead of instruments, which is utter BS. It always takes a human being to create things...

I did, kinda commercial for me. Used to kinda like the song with the pinball sounds, but the local station here played it 5x's a day for months on end.

I hate when they do that.  Why I rarely listen to the radio.  Still, when I finally do hear his stuff it always impresses me.  First non-jazz man to imbue his riffs with a sense of humor... that I know of, anyway.

Indeed. And Rival Sons. And The Temperance Movement.

And, stop.

Don't know 'em.  You sure didn't steer me wrong about Bill Burr tho so will investigate!

He excelled in other genres besides hard rock.

http://greatwen.com/2013/10/31/the-many-voices-of-bon-scott/

Was it even his vomit, though? How can we be sure that Johnson and the Young bros didn't, with malice aforethought, suffocate him in, say, Rudd's vomit?

Only album that has the Band, Album and hit song of the same name.

One of my favorite classic rock bands.

Too many great albums and varying tastes to name one. Depends on my mood as well. Maybe I could cull them down to 20 if I had to but that would be tough.

Def Leppard - Hysteria (Full Album):

I see you are a big Leppard fan.  Yes great album.  Maiden, GnR are also great.  Pearl Jam 10 is also one of the best albums ever but can't put them in classic rock league

Might have to put Metallica ...and justice for all near the top.

In subsequent press interviews, Page had indicated that the band was never meant to last more than two albums. After the band split, Page and Rodgers returned to solo work while Chris Slade joined AC/DC and Franklin teamed up with guitarist John Sykes in Blue Murder.

Bon Scott is one of rock's most under rated artists.  They guy was a musical genius.  We wouldn't  know who Angus is/was had Bon not joined the band.

Toward the end, there was D.A.D. (Danish) and LSD (Life, Sex, and Death - the best 80s sounding 90s band no one's ever heard of); both underrated, if rated at all.

75 bucks??? A complete rip off. I bought the 2008 remastered version the day it came out for like Ł9.00 (15 bucks approx.) on Amazon. It's a good album and track two was written by none other than Phil Collen. Def Leppard had a hit with their own version of the song around three years later.

I bet all the Def Leppard haters wish they could have houses like these:
