It's amazing to see the listed body weights of most of the competitors in this show.
-
Amazing to see posing trunks not hiked up their asses too. BB was a bit less gay then.
-
Bodybuilding before massive amounts of HGH, insulin and synthol.
-
At least 2 of those "athletes" are dead already....and Momo was the only one with a gut back then...still 10X better than modern lineups....
-
bob paris looked like shit!
-
Just goes to show you all the extra "weight" these guys are carrying nowadays isn't doing them any good!
-
bob paris looks soft as shit, terrible.
-
So we have gym rats today that weigh 240 and fairly lean who are not nearly as "big" as these guys. ???

Bob had lost interest in the sport after 88 and he was just doing it for the paycheck from sponsors. Heck, he even states on the video that he was training at home. 91 was his last year he stepped onstage and at the time, drug testing was around and since he was the most vocal about it...I'm more than sure he did the event with no anabolics.
Funny thing is he's the one that lucked out. Rather than sloshing through Cali reliving his glory days like other bodybuilders selling fart powder, make-up, he's living in the woods on an island outside British, Columbia with his partner. He makes more money doing public speaking and writing than others doing guest poses and he doesn't really need the money as he saved very wisely.
If only other bodybuilders took his heed and did the same. They need to realize that careers are very short in bodybuilding and there's no retirement plan

I never followed the BB back then, to young and not gay enough yet.

you are among the most respected posters on here, why do you suppose that is? And what constitutes the "size" of these gym rats you are referring to vs the look of these guys from the early 90's

My hypothesis is that these competitors still had a "base" before they went the AAS route.

First of all thanks for the compliment. Take a look at these guys today. I don't mean just the competitors but all these guys who are weighing in excess of 240 plus. You would be hard pressed to find any of them who could stand next to the guys in this video and match them for size. Arms are bigger chest is bigger, back and legs. The one thing that you do see on the bigger guys today are huge guts. Years ago a buddy of mine who was not a lifter and never was wanted to lose some weight. He had a huge freakin gut from drinking beer. Surprisingly he was not all that fat I mean as far as subq fat. Legs were very lean, you couldn't pinch an ounce of fat on this guys stomach but he looked like he swallowed a watermelon. He was a huge beer drinker and had the tell tale beer gut but almost all of his fat was visceral meaning behind the abdominal wall. He cut back on beer no he didn't quit and went on a very strict diet. He lost 45 pounds and his stomach was all but gone. Now think about these guys today and try to imagine where all this extra weight is coming from. Now maybe you don't need to imagine anymore. So my question is what does a beer drinker have in common with todays current bodybuilder?

He looks a lot better than John Brown's torn right pec.

Its an interesting point, guys measurements haven't gone up just their waist lines.
I know guys that are now weighing in at 270lbs onstage and dont look anything like the pros of the 90s as far as size goes.
I know this guy was 270lbs in this pic, hes 6ft by the way

Good points.
So much extra added bodyweight in the stomach
Of so many nowadays.
Mainly down to the amounts of insulin used.
Not that it adds a lot of extra lbs to physique's today
Notice how much bigger delts are now.
Synthol.

Todays bodybuilders on the pro and sometimes at the amatuer level completely suck.
they used to be inspired to train hard, now it makes me want to quit altogether at times.

at one time every build looked unique today everyone has stuffed boulder delts, over filled arms, waddle, disproportioned top/bottom/or waists wider than shoulders/structure..

Are you trying to suggest that visceral fat is more dependent on insulin, thus those who drink beer, a high glucose beverage (liquid being the quickest medium aside from injecting) would increase insulin (akin to your friend), therefore the weight is from insulin and visceral adipose tissue?

Bingo! Welcome to the my world LOL.
The heaviest pro at the '91 IM was S. Cotrell from UK at 250 and he was 6' 3".
Benfatto looked incredible and he's listed at 5'6" and 178 lbs.
A young Vince Taylor around 5'9" ,competed at 210 here looking pretty massive on stage.
Adding sheer mass just for the sake of being bigger doesn't always = better.
Plus, you don't need to drug test, if the judges simply reward the best overall physiques .

No gut, no glory.

Truth its a terrible look the current look, is there anyway back for these guys disgusted, not on a competitive sense, just a physique sense, guy at my gym I see every morning looks huge in clothes compared to us 90s guys but on stage his gut kills everything, theres no illusion of size like we had back in the glory days.
Can these guys avoid the insulin, use some t3 to help shrink the visceral fat, maybe even some gh,along with just gear how do they lose this fat and bring their waists back, or is it permanent , this guys legs and back are huge but due to his waist, nothing pops, he's still placing well as the whole sport has the issue but he wants to try and reduce this as a priority rather than continue skin.

Until a good tall bodybuilder stood next to him.

never understood why the judges penalized him for being short.
he had good conditioning and one of the few people ever to have ZERO weak body parts, yet they always placed him below first because he was so short.
he won only 1 pro show if I recall. but was top 4 or 5 in almost everyone one he entered.

Pastel was shorter than Lee Priest. I think that bigger guys like Kevin Levrone, Flex Wheeler & Aaron Baker just made him disappear

guys are twinks compared to today's mass monsters... ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
