I'm looking to start a home gym. I got a pair of ironmasters, next up is a squat stand, barbell, and a few plates ( preferably bumper).
Anyone have recommendations? I'm not looking to break the bank (new eleiko everything, eg), but I'm not cheap either (doesnt need to be used).

Super happy with my Rogue monster-lite rack.

thanks for the advice.
i was looking at rogue's echo squat stand (http://www.roguefitness.com/echo-squat-stand), economy bar (http://www.roguefitness.com/mens-economy-bar), and a 165 lb set of the hi-temp plates (http://www.roguefitness.com/rogue-hi-temp-bumper-plates). Not sure if I'll be able to fit a full rack in my garage -- I'll have to measure.
That would run me $951:
199 (bar)
373 (plates, + 50 for grey zone shipping)
275 (rack)
104 (shipping)
Seems reasonable.

oh damn, the monster lite does look super nice... pullup bar + arms. might have to get that: http://www.roguefitness.com/sml-2-rogue-90-monster-lite-squat-stand
too bad the safety arms are extra. I'd like those for straight-leg dls. Still, $1200 isn't bad.

Rogue would be my choice for new equipment too -
I'd swap the bar to one of these though - http://www.roguefitness.com/the-ohio-bar or http://www.roguefitness.com/burgener-rippetoe-men-s-bar . You'll feel a difference, and the money involved is minuscule given the lifespan of a good bar.

I have the original Ohio. It's very nice and the knurling is the best I've ever felt.

$373 is only for 160lbs of Rogue Bumpers.
Craigslist is your friend here - no reason to spend $ when you don't have to - I got my squat rack, Pendlay bar, cambered bar, and hex bar all off craigslist for a fraction of the cost.

Spring for the safety arms. I've never regretted it; I use them in a lot of ways.

Given the way my trainings been going lately, it's all I need. I'm the kind of sucker who will always pay a premium in lieu of hunting for a deal. That said, im trying to break out of my mold... Still, given I'm only looking at roughly a grand and a half for equipment that, as BB said, will last a lifetime, I'm not too keen on trawling around much.
I'll give craigslist another look for the weights, but these racks look perfect. Not sure about the bar.

Get a local fabricator to knock up a basic squat rack, steel box section is rediculously cheap and a squat rack could easily be knocked up in a few hours for less than half the price of a brand name item and will be better made.

Go for the safety arms. Going into a deep squat without spotters is dangerous. I know Olympic squatters know how to dump a squat when stuck but I have never been able to do it. My safety bars have saved me many a day. They are also good to hold the bar for such things as curls and shrugs. Here's a picture of my squat racks.

looks great..saves space too. would love a rack at home but because of space i have squat racks. can you bench between them ?

I can't the squat safety catch is too high. When I bench I use the adjustable blue safety rack in the picture. I can adjust it so I can bench to the chest but if I get stuck I can sink it lower and they will be on this rack. It has saved me many a day.

x2.

I actually have a new calf machine out of the picture but truth be told the old one gets the job done. I can load up over 300lbs pounds of plates and it feels perfect. I don't know why I wasted my money getting the shiny new thing. It doesn't even feel as good as this old school one.

sell the new one... i just do one legged calf raises/ Barbell seated calf raises at home. donkey calf raises now and again with my son on my back.

The rogue safety arms are adjustable up and down. I use them for safety, pin-presses, and for hand-offs for curls, shrugs, etc.
