Title: Vacation and not working out...
Post by: Dr Dutch on June 19, 2015, 01:30:04 PM
In the past there have been summer holidays when I was frightened to shrink away because I could not train with weights for the 2 or 3 weeks duration of the vacation. I wasted lost of time and fun doing push-ups and pull-ups and all kinda shit stuff.

Question: if you just don't do any bodybuilding training, how long will it take to see yourself shrinking ?
And what is a good preparation for that 2-3 weeks ?

All bodybuilders know with a 100% certainty that you begin shrinking immediately after leaving the gym for your last workout pre-vacation. The atrophy accelerates on the plane, in the hotel, in the pool, eating shit food, drinking, fucking your wife.

Face it, you'll be a 140 ib. twink with 14" arms when you return no matter what you do. So enjoy.

Or not.

That's a typical "it all depends" question. You won't lose that much when you eat, drink & sleep well and stay physically active.

I notice a difference when not going to the gym for just a week.

In strength Maybe, but in volume too?

If you shrink after one or two weeks of a break you simply weren't meant to have any muscles.

When you mean volume, do you mean muscle size?

The first thing to go is the fullness. It's probably minimal but whenever I've had to miss a few days on the trot it feels monumental. Full blown mental illness.

Shrinking is one thing, but I suspect if you don't go to the gym for 2 weeks, you will lose some muscle, though its probably negligible.

Anyway.
I think a good way to prepare for a 2-3 weeks break is to really workout hard the weeks before vacation, plus to keep your calories up (doesn't matter if you gain 1-2 pounds of fat).
That way I do not believe you will lose an ounce of muscle in that period.

Where are you going on vacation that you have no access to a gym?  At the very least do body weight exercises and pack a TRX in your suit case.

If you are training hard then one week off will make you stronger and recuperated. Second and third could be a problem if you are doing nothing but eating like a pig and drinking alcohol every day.

To reiterate work out on vacation. Run both distance and sprints.  Find a gym and get a vacation membership. If you're vacationing in North Korea and you can't find a gym do body weight and TRX until you come back. The three weeks off from weights could be a blessing in letting hurting joints recuperate and you find if you do it right you lost fat by changing up your training routine to body weight stuff.

I hear ya and been there/done that.
I suggest you relax and enjoy it BUT don't take a 100% off exercise break.
Jog, do abs, push ups, pull ups, etc.
Plenty of basic body wt type work outs you can do with very little equipment.

Good luck.

Brought tears to my eyes. Very funny.

OP, to answer your question, enjoy your vacation. If you want to work out, then do so. If not, I don't think it will matter too much as long as you're active.

Typically, most of the hotels I stay at (not all of course) have a gym that is open 24 hours. What I like to do is wake up very early (say 5am) and go to the gym for about 45 minutes every morning, followed by a nice jump in the pool, to a shower in the room, which leads me on time to breakfast.

If I don't have a gym at the hotel, I like to swim in their pool or at the beach and just do enough laps to get a decent workout in.

anything over a week is long. I lose 7lbs easy in a week. 3 weeks is not gonna be good. That is way too long. Hotel gyms suck ass you may as well not even train. Plus your food won't be on point, so why bother. You're only as good as your last meal.

You have to be creative & flexible, there are always multiple ways to maintain what you've got. You can buy chicken and perform body weight movements everywhere, so it mainly depends on your priorities.

But if I just sit on my ass doing nothing than tan (eating enough protein will be no problem) for let's say 2,5 weeks, will I visibly atrophy you think ?

You might be a bit less fuller, but not that much. It's esp the loss of strength/stamina that sucks once you start to workout again.
Make sure you have water with you all the time.

Psychologically, you'll be a mess. The first week, you'll convince yourself that your "CNS needed a break" and that the time off is good for you. After that wears off, you'll start looking the other way when you pass a mirror. At week 3 you'll look down and no-shit see a 12 year old girl's arm hanging off your shoulder.

You've been warned.

But then I remember Mike Mentzer, and by the time I get home I'll be 10 pounds of lean muscl le heavier. Then I will consider Arthur Jones my only God, and Mike his profet.....

Have fun and forget about the gym for those couple of weeks. It's a good idea to take a week off every few months and 2-4 weeks off once a year.

And dead around the age of 50

But on a serious note, that's only when your CNS begs for mercy after taking the HIT train for a long time, and -tadaaa...- the use of PEDs..
