So, this guy basically developed a software that taught itself how to play Super Mario. Again, he didn't develop an AI that plays Mario, but a software that LEARNED how to play it.

In essence it's a neural network, trained by a genetic algorithm (evolutionary learning). This is a classic form of AI.
