Post by: thegamechanger on June 29, 2015, 01:00:54 AM

I dont feel I get any kind of benefit other than a good stretch for the core, which I like to feel sometimes.

maybe that all it does. and people confuse that with gains.
i dont see how you could add resistance to it for example.

Some people swear by Ab Wheels and others hate them. If you feel a benefit use it. A fellow trainer uses an ez bar for these and i have never seen him doing a crunch/sit up.I personally use crunches and reverse crunches which fully fullfill the function of the Abs with the correct breathing. the Abs get enough "Core" training from normal weight training.

By the way.. Planks are way over rated too in my opinion. Still people do them. If you are going to do Planks do them at the end of your programme and your ab training should be a well thought out routine like any muscle group. After all do you think you will fully develop any Muscle group with one movement?

Yes Donny, hit them from all angles and switch up your routine to keep those abs guessing.

good to hear about planks though, not a fan of them. theyre a pain in the ass and i try to avoid exercises that are for the most part.

I once watched a video (no homo) of Greg Plitt (no homo) using a barbell with 45's on it to do ab rollouts (no homo). I actually tried it (NO HOMO) and it was pretty intense, so I might halfheartedly endorse the idea of the ab wheel.

yeah i mean if you like it do it. I have sometimes just done Hanging knee raises for Abs, however i throw in a set or two twisting. i knew a guy years ago ( circa 87) who just did old school slant Board twisting sit ups, had great Abs. diet was not great either. Some people are like that but for most parts the Abs should be given serious training like BigCyp wrote... at least before a contest. Guys like Frank Zane and even Big Guys like Pearl hit abs with variety and Hard.

I'm not going to vote because I'm not sure. I RECENTLY BOUGHT AN AB WHEEL BECAUSE A STUDY HAS SHOWN IT TO BE THE MOST EFFECTIVE FOR YOUR ABS. BUT I'M NOT SURE.  I'M NOT FEELING IT. I THINK I MIGHT BE DOING IT WRONG. (SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS).

i think there's a difference between dieted abs and chiseled out abs also difference between visible abs and abs that are strengthen, can take a punch etc
so when some people say you dont need to train abs just diet thats not really telling the whole story

agree with you on this. boxing training is the first thing to mention. The next question is reps and using external poundages.. The machine crunch i do sometimes but i just donīt feel my abs working like i do with bodyweight and higher reps. I try to work my midsection with my mind and concentration. I sometimes use a programme that is just going from one ex to the other, crunches,twisting..etc. just working till i feel itīs enough. I know some people say train with weight/reps like other muscle groups but i think differently.

Do you guys have any good routines for me to try? Mine are always the worst, just junk. I've only really gotten diet abs (breifly) and have neglected working them over the years.

Crunches twisting SS reverse crunches. Work up to Hanging reverse crunches. when you can do hanging reverse crunches you have a strong midsection. Can be done old school from a bar or from a hanging leg raise bench with a pad for your back. itīs more advanced than a hanging knee raise, rolling your knees upwards. The starting point is Key. Thighs parallel and not hanging straight down. Roll your abs.

Thanks man! Reps/sets? I never know what ranges to do when it comes to abs.

Don't start counting until it hurts, then do 25

If u can do standing ab wheel rollouts for reps u r probably in great shape. Few gym rats can do this

Quoted for truth. I do them from my knees and try to roll out far. No other exercise from hanging leg raises, weighted crunches, or sit ups has made my abs feel more sore. On the negative it can be really hard on the shoulder joint.

I haven't 'trained abs' in probably five years... If they've 'deteriorated' at all its like... 5%, at most

I wonder if an training is pointless.  I've never seen a well developed bber with 'weak abs'.  Maybe unattractive shape, but never have I thought, 'that guy could benefit from some more crunches'.

Voted gay shit

I rarely "train abs" directly, or arms for that matter.

I train abs daily, if getting out of bed and up off of benches between sets counts..
