I've been on getbig for a month or so and I can't believe what people say about bodybuilding and this is a bodybuilding site. I'd hate to see how your everyday people view this SPORT. The people that don't think it's a SPORT are probably the guys that didn't make it or cant make it as a successful bodybuilder or their girls left them for a bodybuilder.

Well I would say it is a sport. The "beauty contest part" isn't but the training and preparation for the show could be called a sport. IMO
-
No, I think that we (on the board) know what bodybuiding is an have come to grips with what it is. I mean it is what it is... You cant get a bunch of muscle guys in thongs , put them up on a stage and tell me its not a bunch of muscled up guys in thongs on a stage...
-
First and foremost it is a lifestyle cult, that is something the federations need to get a grasp on , secondly it could be classed as a form of sport due to its competitive side, but because there is no definitive way of winning in this sport as it is reliant on opinion it is generaly not seen as a "true"sport by the onlooking public !!! Much the same as Figure skateing or Rythem gymnastics are veiwed!
-
When the day ends and I'm out and about, people know what I do. Can you say the same thing about someone that bowls or runs track? It's a bodybuilding competition, not a bodybuilding display.
-

Bingo!, the contest part is more on a "pageant" and the training is the real sport.

If Poker is considered a sport than so should bodybuilding.
-
it's a lifestyle
-
it's a lifestyle
Exactly... it's not a sport, it's something you live and breathe, 24 hours a day.. it changes the way you eat, sleep, prioritize your day and so on. Besides it can't be classified a sport, according to the dictionary, a sport is:
a) Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
bodybuilding while it may be competitive, is not a physical activity... standing oiled up on a stage, flexing is not a physical activity.
-

I WOULD HAVE TO AGREE HERE MAYNE! AND A VERY ADDICTING ONE AT THAT.

So it's easy, and anyone can do it successfully?
-
weight lifting is a liftstyle.
Bodybuilding is not a sport, it's a show for fags. Natural or not, if you compete on a stage to show off your muscles, you re either just gay or too stupid to do anything else to earn money.

Yes...anyone can be a "bodybuilder" and be successful at it. Can anyone COMPETE and be successful...no!

So you turn gay once you get big and compete?

the shows almost have a dog-show feel. they should add in the lifting itself . how correctly it's done and such. that could be like compulsories.
just think it would sure weed out the fake oil guys

as usual, i have the same answer to this:
to laugh at people. insecure retarded losers like some members (robert ziruolo, double xl, adonis, arvilla)
or insecure and "too stupid to get a job" "pro" gays juicers.

I don't know any bitch ready to leave her man for a "bodybuilder" lmao.
what an old and tired myth "look i have muscles so every girl wants to f**k me and being muscular, it MUST mean i"m rich and famous"
please give me a break.
People cares about money, security and not about insecure losers who injects drugs into their body to balance their insecurity, related to dick size or lack of intelligence .

So basicly what you are saying is that you can not stand the person you are as you are a nastie son of a bitch , a person whom emulates there father ,a man whom you hated but have grown up to be exactly like , and it is because of this and the fact you are to pussy to address the insecuritys you have in your self that you take it upon your self to put any one down that may pose as a threat to you or whom you deem to be of a better standing than your self , ------ boy you must have lots of friends and realy enjoy life !!!
-
rofl erm yeah..whatever
for sure everyone has insecurities, lets just say some have more than others ;D
people like arvilla and robert ziruolo obviously have BIG insecurities to live through the internet, post their pics everydays and being permanently worshipping themselves.
Most weight lifters started due to small man syndrome, but some are just taking that shit too far, and it ends with freaks like bodybuilders who are lifetime juicers , doing nothing but training, eating and sleeping , people like gregg valentino and derek anthony, etc
bodybuilding is by definition an extremism, caused by a mental disorder.
Weight lifting and powerlifting are, in my book, different. You do it for health and pride, but showing off on a stage with oil getting cheered by fagots in the audience is just, simply gay.
there are rules when you do powerlifting, so it's a sport.
But when you are judged subjectively by people on your physique, it has nothing to do with a sport, it's pure gayness.
especially when the results are already written.
I still didnt manage to understand how people can "follow" pro bodybuilding contests, because everything is staged and people are not even really judged : you really have to be incredibly stupid to still compete knowing the fact that you don't have a fuckign chance to place anywhere near the top.

When Boats started having engines, sailing became a "sport".

-
Holy shit you're a bunch of morons...Stop the damn insults and actually have an intelligent discussion!
Is bodybuilding a sport? Well let's see....
Sport-Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
-An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Sport
Bodybuilding competitions...I.E. Posing onstage infront of judges is not a physical competition. It isn't physical at all but aesthetic. The TRAINING for this contest is physical But the training isn't the actuall competition, Competitors aren't judged on how they have trained but on how they look.
Making posing part of the competition might make it a "sport" simply because the posing itself is physical and is a competition so it would then therefor be a "sport". However Modern bodybuilding competions aren't judged on posing. A guy who's much larger than another guy doesn't get points taken away because he can't pose worth a damn.
Therefor no..Bodybuilding is NOT a "sport". So what? Who cares if it's not a "sport"? It doesn't make a difference. I still enjoy lifting weights and might someday compete. There's nothing wrong with it not being a "Sport".
-

True...bu the difference between those "sports and bodybuilding is that those "sports" take skill and bodybuilding doesn't!

Bodybuilding is a sport but Bodybuilding contest i dont believe is a sporting event but rather a figure contest/beauty pagent, having said that though todays bodybuilding has lost much of the beauty and is at times more like a freak show with these synthol assholes and gh gut clowns.

What if there was a bodybuilder with lots of money, really smart, monster penis and straight. Can this ever happen?

Surely you cant group all into this catagorie by the stupids acts of a mere few, most bodybuilders whom compete and use gear do so for a reason that is perfectly ok by them , you must reside to the fact that weightlifters and powerlifters also use gear , and the use of it is perfectly ok by there own reasonings, but does this make you hate them as much as a bodybuilder !!!???--NO-- but in your reasoning it should !!
Just about every powerlifter I have meet as been extreme in their approach to the sport ,but not extreme in their eyes only extreme to the uneducated looking in !!!

Bodybuilding contests aren't sport and neither is bodybuilding as a hobby. Bodybuilding as a Hobby I.E. lifting weights to build your body is not a sport because 1.It is not a competition and 2.It does not have rules governing it. These two things are required for it to be a sport.

Because it is a competition.
Haha. Your reasoning skills are shit. "Competition" doesn't always imply "Sport".
Chess for instance is a competition yet it is not a "sport".
Poker is a competition yet is not a "sport".
Playing video games is a competition yet not a "sport".
Shit...AMERICAN IDOL is a competition but that damn sure isn't a "sport".

there is no competitive physical exertion involved in pageants
flex every single muscle simultaneously for long periods of time
that is physical exertion

"there is no competitive physical exertion involved in pageants"......the talent round comes to mind!
"flex every single muscle simultaneously for long periods of time, that is physical exertion"....dude, their flexing for about 10seconds, I'm on toilet for a 20-25min with my laptop doing the same thing!!
"being a good poser takes athletic ability" that quote just takes the cake!!

Of course bodybuilding is a sport. How else can you explain why it's in the Olympics every year. Or why ESPN spent half a SportsCenter covering the Ironman. Or why Branch Warren was on the cover of Sports Illustrated last year. Or why CourtTV is devoting so much time to the Titus-Ryan case.

I never said Bodybuilding competitions aren't competition,I said lifting weights for bodybuilding competition or as a hobby isn't competition. When you compete in a bodybuilding show you aren't judged on your weight lifting ability but on your looks. When you're in the gym lifting weights that's not a sport because simply lifting weights by yourself is not a competition and it has no rules governing it.
A bodybuilding show IS a competition but it's not a sport because the competitors are not judged on their atheletic ability but on looks.
Flexing isn't physical competition because they aren't judged on how well they can flex either,They're judged purely on looks.
Perhaps the challenge round in posing could be considered a sport but as we all know that was a flop.
Bodybuilding being on ESPN as rare as that may be doesn't make it a sport. If it does I suppose poker and spelling bees are also a sport. ::)
-
Weightlfiting and bodybuilding both come from the same foundations, you go to a gym you lift weights you either go one way and weightlift or you go the other and bodybuild. Both are sports requiring heavy commitment but bodybuilding for the elite has to be come a way of life. Ahmen :)

You have to "weight lift" to bodybuild. You go into a gym and if you choose powerlifting or bodybuilding you're going to be lifting weights regardless.

I am a bodybuilder in the sense I lift weights to build my body. However being a bodybuilder i'm not hesitant to admit that Bodybuilding is not a sport.
Now try to compose a logical argument and don't throw petty insults at me.
-
Fact is, bodybuilding is the hardest SPORT today. Only few in the world will make it to the top.
-
J. Apollo is correct in my opinion and if you ask most logical people who aren't one sided then they would agree with the fact that Bodybuilding is an art more then a sport and a Bodybuilding Contest is just a competition based solely on looks and overall presentation of ones self to fit the judging "criteria" of symetry, muscle hardness, vasculartity, conditioning and posing. But as i said before Bodybuilding as we know it today loosely follows its roots and well basically lost its "beauty".
-
Sport..... and one that requires a fucking lot of dedication and hard work at that!
to say it aint a sport is an insult to the athletes that bust their balls to compete.
-
Skating is not considered a sport. therefore bodybuilding is not a sport. a sport is not to be decided by a judge base on preferences. Keep in mind that a judge is different from a referee. Referees enforce the rules of the game. they dont pick or decide the outcome. By general rule, most sports have a game clock. where there is a judge, anything cannot always be considered as a sport.
-
It's NOT A SPORT people..Get over it. ::)
-
A sport requires talent, bodybuilding requires none. It's only about genetics, consitency with training and diet, on a pro level it's the right blend of drugs. This is why I could never sweat a pro bodybuilder. Great musicians have more talent at the age of 5, then Ronnie Coleman in a lifetime. Nothing against bodybuilding, there is just zero talent in it.
-
What is sport.
Gymnastics is a sport and what are they trying to do. Carry out moves and get them as close to perfect as possible in bodybuilding you carry out particular moves and try and get them as close to perfect as possible. Neither a gymnast or bodybuilder could carry out the moves without training and practice. Holding poses for long periods of time is definately physical. the training is very physical and done in order to try and achieve as close possible to what is considered perfect.
On the other hand you could consider it art as you take your body and try and sculp it into a work of art. then you display your work of art against others to see who is closest to perfect.

Does Shaquille O'Neal have talent or just have genetics to play basketball?

Fact is, bodybuilding is the hardest SPORT today. Only few in the world will make it to the top.
The hardest part of bodybuilding is dieting, not training. You got people getting ready for shows doing 2 hours of cardio and 45min to an hour of actual weights and thats done half assed! And like in ANY sport, only a few will make it to the top!

Of course they are judged on posing ability. So many good bodybuilders lose out because they cant pose well enough. A bodybuilder who can pose well can move ahead because of thier presentation.
It is no good having a good physique if you cant pose and the posing routine is judged in our federation so you need to be able to do a good routine as well.
Croach every sport is reliant on genetics to get to the top so your argument is wrong.
Armz not if you are natural couldnt do all that cardio and maintain muscle. Need to train no drugs to help growth. Also the amount of cardio might indcrease before a show but it takes years of training to achieve any muscle mass. Most top naturals have been training for years

Sorry dude but 5 secs that would be a joy. I have been on stage for an hour posing. Hey and a bit training maybe I could do a ironcross. How many gymnasts can squat 140kg for reps at a bodyweight of 60kg it is all relative.
Jonny I have judged a lot of competitions including our British championships and I could see that a competitor had a good physique when they walked on stage but when they started posing they lost out because they did not show what they have got. I can only comment on competitions I have judged or competed in. I even know that when I did my first pro show I was lacking expercience and some of my poses where not as good as some of the more experienced pros and yes i think it held me back.

Bodybuilding is the process of developing muscle fibers through the combination of weight training, increased caloric intake, and rest. Someone who engages in this activity is referred to as a bodybuilder. As a sport, called competitive bodybuilding, bodybuilders display their physiques to a panel of judges, who assign points based on their aesthetic appearance.

Yes. There is competition, winners and losers. Judges act like referees. Just cause there ain't no ball, doesn't mean it's not a sport.
-
That such a question is asked and debated endlessly proves it is not a sport.

It's not a sport. It does not fit the definition of a sport. Stop refering to it as a sport you fool.
I KNOW IT'S NOT A SPORT, what the hell do you think Earl and I have been arguing about for the last 2 freaking years. And here's another one......BODYBUILDERS ARE NOT ATHLETES EITHER. What part of my post did you not comprehend??

Bowlers are athletes, golfers are athletes but bodybuilders don't look very athletic at all, so maybe you're right..

Going by dictionary definitions, bodybuilding fits the label of athletic sport. It just sucks that it has to be judged. Look at boxing.

First, if it was a sport there would be no point of this thread. What does Ronnie Coleman physically do that warrants him being "Mr. Olympia"?? What can he DO that I cannott???

Wikipedia is not an authority. It's edited by everyday people.
The fact of the matter is simple,I posted the dictionary definition of "Sport" and Bodybuilding does NOT fit that definition for many reasons.
End of debate.

In the early 2000's, the IFBB was attempting to make bodybuilding an Olympic sport. It obtained full IOC membership in 2000 and was attempting to get approved as a demonstration event at the Olympics which would hopefully lead to it being added as a full contest. This did not happen. Olympic recognition for bodybuilding remains controversial since some argue that bodybuilding is not a sport because the actual contest does not involve athletic effort. Also, some still have the misperception that bodybuilding necessarily involves the use of anabolic steroids, which are prohibited in Olympic competitions. Proponents argue that the posing routine requires skill and preparation, and bodybuilding should therefore be considered a sport.
E, it seems this is not a simple closed argument and still a very much live debate. Personally, I have a hard time arguing something is a true sport where judges determine the outcome of the event based on their perceptions of perfection. However, there is no argument that there is a physical component to competing. Regardless of the drug use in bodybuilding getting on stage and posing is hard fvcking work and unless anyone has seriously tried they have no idea what they're talking about.
So, is bodybuilding a true sport? IMO, it's not but the men and women that do compete are certainly athletes.

None of the competitions judge posing ability, Just looks. That's why arnold wanted to include the "challenge round" but as we all know as i've said numerous times that was a failure. None of the Pro's want to be judged on posing ability.

i still dont' know if i like the challange round or not. Its something different to bring to teh show though.
