Post by: Darren Avey on June 29, 2015, 04:24:47 PM
Apparently old timer boxer Jim Jefferies used to pick and and throw over his shoulder 500lb railway sleepers as part of his training!  ::)

of course he didn't, these claims are always exaggerated to the max...but he was a freak of nature athlete anyway. Most only really remember him for getting dragged back out of retirement as the "great white hope", only to get knocked the fuck out by Jack Johnson, but in his heyday he was an absolute beast for the era he was in.

X2

Jefferies was a beast. He was totally past it when he fought Johnson though. He didn't get knocked out but would have done had the fight gone on.
A prime Jefferies against Johnson would have been good to see.

Is a railway sleeper a vagrant taking a nap on the train?

Good point, I remembered it as a KO win for Johnson, but it was the corner that eventually pulled him out after two heavy knockdowns. Six years into retirement and over 100lbs to lose in weight...never really had much of a chance.  he'd have been KTFO if he got in the cage with Darren though  ;D

I think the oddest idea is that he gained over 100 pounds in retirement.  He fought at 220 retires to an alfalfa farm and gets his weight over 300 pounds.

I assumed the training of that era was a joke and the food being more nutritious  because it was home cooked and mostly because  "fast food" wasn't an option.

That's not even considering  he got back down to his fighting  weight within 7 months.
