Remember when an IFBB Pro Card was something very rare? Where each class winner of the NPC Nationals would be offered one, but only the overall winner of the NPC USA?

There is no prestige in bodybuilding anymore. It's just another revenue stream.

Business-wise .... the "issuance" of more IFBB Pro Cards was a very wise decision.
And the initiation of Physique competition opened the 'flood-gates' for thousands of new NPC members .
It appears to be a win/win situation for one and all I can't see how it will have any adverse effect on the present 'caliber' of the Olympia contenders providing that the qualifying standards are maintained.
But I will agree that the 'prestige' of winning a Pro Card has been a bit diluted, which I'm sure is not obvious to those on stage who win one.

I remember debating Bob Chick when the NPC decided to award pro cards to the winners of the Masters Nationals and North America. He was against it back then and said it diluted the prestige of IFBB pro status.
I believe his view has changed?
Now, they award several pro cards in bikini at the Jr USA. Don't even get me started on MPD. :-[
I remember how it was an honor to make the top 15 in your class at the NPC Nationals.
Things have changed and not for the better when it comes to the status of BB.

Girls that got 3rd in some bikini classes got cards because the girls already won one in a master class. Yeah going to do really well as a pro if you place 3rd at a show like this.

I hate all the bikini, physique stuff.....bodybuilding is all I ever care about. So many pros today I have no idea who anyone is and I don't care either.
In the past I get excited with the new North American champ that earned their pro card or the USA champ that earned their pro card made their pro debut...it was a big deal in the sport.
Today there is no hype because local farmer Billy Bob got his pro card in the master's Mr. Turdville show.

And even the six pro bb cards....should be 1 for the best overall.
New, "progressive" era and all that......no thanks.
It's like modern pro wrasslin.....over hyped, wide open views behind the curtains, no complete talent, no bigger than life personalities.....just 500 ppvs a year and all garbage....internet ruined pro wrasslin.

what is the point of some of these guys becoming pros
they have spent tons of money on drugs food, etc, taken a few cocks up the ass to get the funds for these things. they do not have the genetics and shape to be a top pro
or even remotely make any money of a pro. im all for working out getting in shape, looking good and feeling good about yourself, but there has to be a point in your life
when you realize this is a pursuit that will not end well financially or health wise.

And furthermore, the NPC has been short-sighted in this....because the increased entries (hugely increased revenue) they have now are still people that remember how special it was to have a IFBB Pro card a decade ago. But 2-5 years from now when everybody and their aunt, sister and retarded nephew own a Pro card the entries will dwindle down greatly.
Having a IFBB Pro card means nothing now.

And even if the physique, fitness and bikini sticks around that's fine....just limit the pro cards handed out. So many cards are given out like you said that it means nothing. The amateur show just suddenly becomes the pro show. The pro shows used to represent the elite physiques in the world going to head to head.
It's like how Arnold described the O in Pumping Iron, "Each year all the previous Mr. Universes come together and compete on one stage to see who is the best....this is the Mr. Olympia contest."
It used to be that one year "bb Dave and bb Mike" became the new pros and joined the elite. They'd enter their pro show and it was clear they weren't Haneys, Rays, Levrones, Cormiers, etc....yet. Today all the guys look the same from "pro debut" to their last "pro show"....that aint' good either. A 90s show like the Iron Man (which was considered "3rd tier" back then) would rival or surpass the Arnold today....IMHO.

Presenting something on stage that obviously a helluva lotta other people have for a $2 plastic trophy is stupid since the only one who wins are the promoters. Pro bodybuilding is as dead as Lee Harvey Oswald. BB'ing peaked w/ Coleman, Ruhl, Preist, Wheeler, etc., no one gives a shit anymore. People should work on they're minds now not they're appearance. But since the vast majority of people are stupid as shit thats not gonna happen & there always will be predators (promoters) who find a human vanity (weakness) & do everything they can to profit as much as they can from it.

Beating a dead horse but yes, they are handing out IFBB pro cards like candy now, all in the name of $$$$$$$$. If I had a nickel for every time I see "IFBBPRO [insert random name here]" on idiots' Instagrams/Facebook/Twitter, then I'd be a rich man.

In part I think this is because an avg IFBB competitor today would be a standout in the late 70's/early 80's.
