Title: Has anyone actually met Phil Heath?
Post by: Coffeed on July 23, 2015, 08:25:25 AM
I met him about a couple years ago. It was a totally random occurrence but he was the most genuine, nicest fellow. Stopped to talk to me for a while, got a picture, etc. Totally down to Earth.

I realize reigning champs always receive the most e-hate, but Phil Heath in person was one of the friendlist "athletes" I ever met.

Have seen him a million times. Talked to him though ? Not really. More of just a nod or hello in passing.

I did. He happened to train at my gym while in town. We worked arms together. He congratulated me on my physique. Then, I woke up.

I know someone who went to dinner with him after a guest appearance over here, they liked him too.

It's odd, in person everyone says the same. But over social media we can all see him being a complete douche.

Not recently but I did talk to him for a few minutes in the lobby at the NPC nationals back in 2008.
Seemed like a laid back dude and had a real sense of what he wanted to do in bodybuilding.

Met him years ago when he did the guest spot in the ukbff  Portsmouth qualifier.
Really personable guy and very chilled out. This was before he was MrO. At the end when most had left he hung around and took photos with people and didn't have any kind of attitude.

I had the misfortune of bumping into him at the deli counter at walmart. He was purchasing 5kgs of coleslaw, and 2 extra large bratwurst. Guess he was off to do some G4P. I called him out on this, he started calling me a "hater" and began running toward an aisle where two trolleys were parallel. Needless to say, he didn't even have to turn sideways to navigate this obstacle.

Most of you will probably not like hearing this.....

I know him really well and can vouch for him as a good guy. Most of you here would find him hilarious if you had the chance to hang with him.

We usually get talking about cars, fast cars, exotic cars and classic cars. Unlike a lot of bodybuilders, Phil has interests in lots of things that are not bodybuilding. cars, sport, business, travel etc.

As for arrogant, you are all fucking sheep that jump on any bandwagon you can.

I have had him in my gyms many times and he has time for everyone. I have never seen him disrespect a fan or promoter anywhere. I have worked with him in Australia, USA, Germany, India, UK, Brazil and Spain (probably more). Never once have I seen him act like a dick, not to any fan or supporter. I have seen him interrupted in airports, clubs and restaurants and still keep his cool.

So there it is. Big shout out to Phil. Proud to be his friend.

What's your opinion on how he conducts himself via social media? And how he acts in his training videos?

Cheers for the post.

I think people read too much in to it. He has a bit of fun at the expense of a few idiots that for the most part deserve every thing they get.
I don't really watch training videos but would suggest that the best workouts never get filmed.

Phil either does not understand the golden rule of being a public figure on the internet or he does not care.

As a public figure, you absolutely cannot respond to criticism unless it is with some charm, humour or another innovative way.

The response is exactly what has happened with him - a lot of people on the internet have this strange perception that a public figure must never respond negatively to negativity.  If the person does, the person is cocky, arrogant and an asshole.

He seems like a smart enough fella, so I'm not sure why he doesn't just exploit it with some innovation.

Yeah, that is another good example of Phil kind of sucks at social media  :-\

I watched I think the "phil trains legs" video yesterday and he came off as excellently well spoken and it was worth watching.  The speaking bit, at least.

That vid you link, though - it's just such a faux pas to talk for 7 minutes about your own success.  It really does annoy the shit out of unsuccessful people.  People hate that shit.  Obviously because it exposes their own misgivings about their performance in whatever it is they would like to succeed at.

Again, if it is done in a charming way.. ie, the way Arnold did - then all is forgiven.  Chances are, a lot of people around Arnold probably didn't like the guy, either though.

Not saying the Phil is an asshole - just saying - rules of the internet: if you respond to negativity with negativity and you talk a lot about your own success - you just need to live with the fact that the swarm will not like you.  You're going against the grain.  The swarm want you to deal with hate with style and they want you to be "humble" (ie, not talk about your own success).  You do that and you win more fans and Phil quite obviously has the intelligence to do this (but he chooses not to).

He's very blessed to have a good friend like u to help us understand all the facts

Going on what Tony says, I would guess that Phil's online image is just a persona like a lot of people online. The fact that he is routinely abused and discredited on various platforms (including here) only stirs him up to keep up the persona. Face to face I can believe he would be a nice guy, and probably flattered to get recognised anywhere - its not like BB in 2015 is the NBA.

I disagree

I think most public figures are actually irritated as fuck by negativity and quite fucking proud of themselves and it's them who put on the public persona.

In my opinion, it's more like Phil isn't putting on a persona :)

Phil pretty much admitted this when he posted here.

C'mon now Wiggs. You know we are cool when we met. But seriously, I can always take a good laugh, which in fact happens here on GetBig. It reminds me of the good ol' days I used to post here while on the come up and people being nicer on here. I do recognize that when you're on top that you will have people that wanna see someone else succeed, so I do get it as its human nature. As far as the social media stuff. I'm just having fun just like you guys on here do at the athlete's expense so we kind of have it in common right?! I mean c'mon, I should be able to laugh at funny stuff too. Anyway, I'd like to thank everyone here for being cool, even when they say funny negative stuff. If people can understand that most basketball guys like me grew up talking smack they'd quickly understand where I'm coming from. Its never personal really, well sometimes as people do kind of take it there, so why not clap back on em and make them meltdown like you guys do here to each other. Seriously though, its been fun to now come one here, so Imma leave my account on for awhile and see how the interaction goes.
