do these work for the traps? seeing guys doing them, anyone tried them. trying to get my traps bigger.
-
I do them on the smith machine. I tried to do them with a free weight barbell but it was too awkward.
-
It feels like something that puts your shoulder in an awkward position and could have injury potential at higher weights. Try using slightly lighter DBs and instead of pulling your shoulders up to your ears, try to pull your shoulders up while pulling your scapulae together in the upper back. Squeeze and hold at the top.
-
Made famous by Lee Haney in one of his old videos. We all tried them and none of us developed Lee Haney like traps. End story.
-
Worked for Haney.
Tried them for a bit, but my ass always impeded the peak contraction.
-
put this is the training section dude...

Yeh, unless you have no ass they are very awkward...
B/bell shrugs to the front, d/bell seated or standing... Deadlifts and rack pulls, all better options

hang cleans i feel are the best for traps, or at least they get my traps pumped the best

they work....do them...do all sorts of shrugs....stop being guys guys

Your trap bar makes the behind the back shrug exercise with the Olympic bar obsolete

This lol!

I've hung out and trained with Lee quite a few times when I was in school in Atlanta. He really did do these exclusively for traps. He once said "what works doesn't really make for a pretty picture". Meaning that the photos in the magazines often showed him doing exercises just for that occasion and that he normally did not do. Like dumb bell shrugs and upright rows.
-
Curls, do you do them?

On his tv show he also performed cable upright rows with the EZ attachment.

Ronnie did the behind the back barb shrugs....pretty short ROM
-
No. I did them once on the smith machine (behind the back) and tweaked my neck real bad.

:'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Try behind the back upright rows on the Smith Machine instead.....far far better.
Just pull up as far as you can and squeeze the upper back/traps area.
You`ll have to go with a slightly wider than shoulder width grip and avoid your butt by thrusting hips a bit forward.
NO HOMO

Yeah he did a lot on tv and in the magazines that he never did in real life.
-
All shrugs are good :)
-
Trained traps heavy early on, with regular grip and behind back grip, today i still have big developed traps even with much less training and just maintenance work, they worked for me.
-
Upright rows are all you need to do for traps
-
They're good too, found shrugs really develop the full width better though.

I'd say non-existent. Horrid form with way too much weight. But, has the audacity to proclaim that it was light. Get real, Ronnie.
-
When I do them, I try not to go too heavy like we would normally do with regular shrugs, but go for more reps. You'll feel them all over the traps rather than just at the top of the traps.
-
Really can't beat dumbbell shrugs, though. Up/rearward, hold for a beat. Repeat.
Also find it best to hold them to the side, lengthwise (mimicking barbell), inner end against outer quad; rather than in front riding up on thighs, or to the side, perpendicular, like Dorian.
Not sure why, just discovered a better peak contraction this way through trial and error.

Do them just like that then as soon as you finish a set grab light db's {around 40-45lbs}
then bang out reps where you start at the top of the contraction then only lower 1-2 inches and go back up for 10-12 reps...its killer :)

Ya know, don't think I've ever applied drop sets here. Never needed to, I guess, usually struggling with last reps anyway. Love them with laterals, though.

Hmm, I've never even thought of them as a drop set, it's not even half a rep more like a quarter rep.
but you really feel it when you do them.

Ok, appreciate the tip, whatever they're called.

Another good one is "armpit rows"...hold 2 bells at outer quads and pull up as far as you can endeavoring to pull into your armpits.
Killer pump.
-
Never heard of these before, are they your invention?

Nope.read about them in an article by Ron Harris and gave them a shot............hold in top position for peak contraction.

I think it's only good for destroying your rotator cuff.
Do reg shurgs with an explosive up move and brief hold on top for better trap stimulation.

Exactly what i started doing a few months ago and it made a big difference.

Not sure anyone got huge from doing them. Bah!
