Title: Favorite/Scariest Horror Villain
Post by: SF1900 on August 06, 2015, 08:42:10 PM
I am watching Nightmare on Elm Street now, which inspired this thread.

The two that freaked me out the most were Pennywise and Candyman. Basile is a close 3rd.

Yes, good choice. That grain bag made him look super creepy. It was better than the mask.

As a kid Pinhead had me all sorts of fucked up. I'm 31 now and I still refuse to watch any of the Hellraiser series.

Myers, Candyman, and Joe Spinell  as Frank Zito / Maniac for me. Also the voice work in the Exorcist creeped me out as a kid.

For whatever reason, individual scenes affect me more than characters in horror films -

For instance, any eyeball violence -

.

The train scene in Maniac screwed me up for a lot of years. I saw it when I was young, and my mom worked nights, so if she was ever late, my mind would flash on that scene -

.

Scroll to 38:00 - 44:00. Still creeps me out sometimes :).

Also the pull apart scene in Day of The Dead, but I got over it quick though. -

.

A senile 1st grade teacher at my elementary school played a movie that one of her students brought from home, but it just so happens that the movie was called "Child's Play". She wasn't fired, even reprimanded for all I know, but ended up retiring a few years later.  This was in the early 90's/late 80's, but could you imagine the outrage it would have caused today?

JWG is a nonfiction character. I guess I was talking about fictional villians.

But, yes JWG is not someone you'd want to be in the same room with.  :-\

Lol, half the reason we shouldn't have watched shit like this at a young age, is that you actually can't discern 100% between fiction and reality. After watching Nightmare on Elm Street when I was 7 or 8 (ffs) I layed in bed and it felt like the probablity of Freddy coming for me that night was like 95% hahaha ;D

In contrast, watched the Babadook recently which is a pretty creepy film and every now and then I remind myself that in every scene there are about 50 people hiding in the background with cameras/films/props etc, kinda takes the edge off  ;D

As a bairn I was scared shitless of the puppets from the first two puppet master films, particularly the one with the drill on his head when he drilled into the sleeping blokes forehead. My sister let me watch it when I was 8 or so.
Pinhead and the coenobites in the first hellraiser was a good character, he was garbage in the rest

Original Leatherface was the best of the masked of the masked horror villains. Something very real about him and the way he just fits in with the rest of his family as if the fact that he is wearing mask made of human flesh is no big deal or mystery.

An honourable mention goes to Cropsey from The Burning and the cenobites from Hellraiser are up there.

Not the scariest but you've gotta love it when actors who are normally loveable characters play the bad guy

While not one particular villain in the movie, the entire concept of Children Of The Corn was creepy as fuck.   Abandoned town, huge cornfield, murderous kids...

That concept could have delivered so much more than what the movie did.

I'm frustrated that no horror movie in many years has given me the chills anymore, everything is a cliche and predictable.
Not villain type horror movies but in concept Hostel I and Hostel II were good.

I grew up during the era of all these fuckers.

I gotta rank Pinhead 1. I'm not to fond of beings from hell. 2. Candyman, creepy ass Hebrew character but a good idea, Chucky made me laugh as a kid and I've never seen a Jason or Freddie movie even though I know who they are. I'm a SAW guy.

I was part of the original slasher era of the late 70s/early 80s. 'Halloween' got the ball rolling, and I still think Myers did it better than the rest. For that genre, the film just got everything right the first time out.

Agreed... From the horrors cited, early Halloween and Michael Myers were the best, truly scary, Krueger and Voorhees looked over the top jokes to me, for example... Don't care much for horrors today, all my favorites are still from back in the days, with Argento and Romero stuff included...

Best part was the 'born evil' motive. No psychobabble, revenge, crime spree, or restless ghost, just a soulless monster who enjoyed himself some killing.

Rob Zombie totally undermined that part in the ridiculously unnecessary "reimagining."

Agreed... Rob Zombie should stop directing, in the same league as Uwe Boll, awful remake, just awful... Like Andreisdaman said, music is extremely important, a good soundtrack can literally make a movie, or everything else, just look at those games in the 90s with masterpiece soundtracks... The first Halloween is still king of the hill for that genre and period...

Disagree. I've come to enjoy Zombie's re-imagining and its sequel as much as I do the original, and this is saying a lot. I love his overall tone and adherence to the sense of dread that is prevalent in Carpenter's.

yeah Zombie kind of gave Myers a reason to turn into a monster, gave him a heart with his baby sister.
i actually liked it but it makes him less evil, more of evil by nurture than nature which is always less scary.

but im one of the very few i think who liked the film!
made him to be a big fucker too which was good!
bit at the start when the female patient was getting raped in his cell and him being completely oblivious to everything until they touched his mask was a good touch,

A new movie with a chance of being a good horror movie. Has a very creepy atmosphere. Got good reviews at Sundance.

Set in New England circa 1630, The Witch follows a farmer who get cast out of his colonial plantation and is forced to move his wife and five children to a remote plot of land on the edge of an ominous forest rumored to be controlled by witches. Almost immediately, strange and unsettling things begin to happen—the animals turn malevolent, the crops fail, and one child disappears while another becomes seemingly possessed by an evil spirit. As suspicion and paranoia mount, everyone begins to point the finger at teenage daughter Thomasin. They accuse her of witchcraft, which she adamantly denies…but as circumstances become more and more treacherous, each family member’s faith, loyalty, and love will be tested in shocking and unforgettable ways.

Writer/director Robert Eggers’ debut feature, which premiered to great acclaim at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival (and won the Best Director Prize in the U.S. Narrative Competition), painstakingly recreates a God-fearing New England decades before the 1692 Salem witch trials, in which religious convictions and pagan folklore famously clashed. Told through the eyes of the adolescent Thomasin — in a star-making turn by newcomer Anya Taylor-Joy — and supported by mesmerizing camera work and a powerful musical score, THE WITCH is a chilling and groundbreaking new take on the genre.

Just great, that's what Halloween was all about, atmosphere, suspence, feelings, and that's why it's still the best... No needs of ten thousands bloody killings... Wasn't Myers screaming when murdering someone in Zombie's version? The original one was always silent with only his breath audible sometimes, he was much more evil...

A name in the article - Steve “Strong” Cepello actually makes this bodybuilding related in a 6 degrees sort of way. Steve was Ironman magazine's in house artist for many years. He also did tons of those old school late 70's, 80's cartoon bodybuilding shirts, the ones with the executioners, vikings, barbarians, and that type of stuff.
