Title: Anyone here worked in the recruitment industry before?
Post by: BigCyp on August 13, 2015, 04:29:17 AM
Friend of mine went for a job with a firm in London, because I showed him the advert and really encouraged him saying it would suit his skills perfectly.

2 years later, and the bastard is on target for six figures this year  ::) :D >:(

He seems to work for a really good company, so I'd like to hear the other side of the coin...

You can do well if you have a good network, or are willing to do the hustling necessary to build one. It's really all about building long relationships with companies and individuals.

Here in the Boston market, it's a crowded space and it's being pushed out a lot because of in-house folks and LinkedIn.

My last gig, the recruiter that brought me in made 25% of my total yearly comp in one go.

Agree on all - seen up to 33%.

Know a few people who worked in advertising/marketing who just started doing this on their own - used connections with the company / former co-workers and just went from there.

I can see how Linked-In and stuff could make this difficult now.

Never worked in recruitment but have good friends that do and many clients in the industry.

No value added industry. Nothing but selling people to firms and hoping that they don't succeed after a year so you can find another one and get another commission.

Friend of mine owns a recruiting agency and they typically take 25% - obviously they negotiate with bigger accounts. I know that a handful of his people earn decent 6 figures - one in particular does VERY well. Before I met him I had no idea the amount of money made in that field.

I can see the downsides to having an industry, which is basically a dating service for complanies/contractors and charging 25% for the pleasure. However, seeing someone who was doing telesales at 19 for a bank, and then driving round to mine in a spanking A5 sport 2 years later tells me there is a slice to be had.

Thank God I had the Merc parked out the front when he pulled up  ;D

The company he works for specialises in Microsoft CRM recruitment, so the commission for winning a contract is pretty huge. A lot of the time he will be poachiing people from elsewhere in Europe as its so specialised.

That's a pretty narrow band of tech. They should at least expand to Salesforce.com too. I can't imagine that Dynamics placement can fill a pipeline.

That's basically what I assumed from our last convo on the topic - maybe they also handle other CRM tech also?

having dealt with recruiters extensively over the last six months

I wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire

they have shoehorned themselves in to a gap in the market that was there

just cause people cant be arsed finding employees

the guy I went with got paid nine grand for sending my cv to someone

crazy
