Title: Mouthpieces in Sports
Post by: jugheadjones on September 02, 2015, 05:55:06 PM
What is with this silliness? I'm watching baseball and they wear mouthpieces in the outfield? I see guys in the gym wearing mouthpieces? What next, mouthpieces in the world chess championships? I don't understand it at all.

I used to think the same as they look very stupid... But! Have someone who knows how to test you, with then without the mouth guard. You may find your range of motion is better with it.
I'm still not gonna wear one though, lol...

I'M sure performance is better with a Bain mask also, leggings for leg day and shit like that. But fuck it... Don't need all that gear.

I just miss days of going into the gym, making a mess with chalk and lifting weights. It seems they took a simple thing and made it so complicated, but all in the name of money I guess.

I get it with some things.

Football, wrestling even.

If you're going to take some real punishment, but damn... Baseball. No.

Man do I hear you on that. When I read about shit like "tuck your elbows in on bench" I have no fuckin' clue what the hell they mean. Lower and raise the mother fucker with control, explode back up. That so complicated??? Many like to make it so...

Sometimes you talk to experts and they make you doubt your own info so much, you begin to think you have it all backwards. Then before you know it, you're doing all these complimentary movements that take a shit load of time and just make you hate going to the gym all together.

I remember there was an add with Aaron Baker sporting a mouth guard way back when. Then again, I think Aaron always liked to have "things in his mouth", lol...

Still, when you consider how long ago that was, he was really ahead of his time.

My dentist recommended that I get a mouthpiece as I grind my teeth when I lift, which is wearing my gums down. I didn't get one but I can see why lifters would wear them (provided they are actually training hard and regularly)

Not to one up anyone here...
But there is scientific evidence that this actually works to slow the heart rate, release tension and put an athlete "in the zone"...
The idea behind it is that when one moves the lower jaw away from the top jaw, and even protrudes it, it produces a calming effect and allows one to concentrate further.
There are athletes that naturally have done this in the past (think Michael Jordan)...
I had the privilege of being taught by some folks at Vision 54, and this is something that they teach...
This is not to say that some wankers do it  simply because they are clowns, just pointing out that for some athletes, there is a real purpose behind it.
Cheers!
