You could have the 200th best physique in the world. An amazing accomplishment putting you in the top .001 percent of humanity. Ahead of about 6.99999 billion other people. And you will not even make enough money from bodybuilding to pay your bills.
Same with the 100th best and possibly the 20th (without hustling).
An industry raking in hundreds of millions.

There's a reason hardly any Bodybuilders make money:
Because the overwhelming majority of the general public sees no reason to pay somebody to lift weights and take drugs.
The 200th best Plumber in the world makes a good living because most people are willing to pay someone to replace a broken drain pipe.

I'd imagine the 200th best plumper's earnings puts the number 1 bodybuilder to shame.

The whole point is that bodybuilding rakes in f*ck all.
The "looking good" industry rakes in billions, but bodybuilding is not about looking good.
Everyone bellyaching needs to wise up to this fact.
Six years ago Chris Scardino sold the prime Olympia sponsorship slot for $400K and everyone at Weider thought he was a legend. If there was money in the "sport" then that slot would be worth 10 times that.
Supplement companies that make big money aren't targeting bodybuilders anymore.

200th best?
Are you living in a van down by Gold's Venice?
Let's start with our most recent Arnold Classic...
2015 Arnold Classic Men’s Bodybuilding Payout:
...
7th: $2,000
8th: $2,000
9th: $2,000
10th: $2,000
11th: $1,000
12th: $1,000
13th: $1,000
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the IFBB does NOT pay for the competitors' hotel and travel.
So, your man around the 200 slot makes shit and the man in the 20th slot nets even less because he's probably spending more on traveling to farther locations and booking more hotel nights.

This is just plain wrong and possibly indicative of a schmoe mindset that doesn't understand males and the masculine mindset. Once the iron bug/muscle bug bites a large portion of males will begin gravitating to whatever is the most extreme, biggest, most ripped. They do the same thing no matter what obsession they choose, poker, muscle cars, football, whatever. Because males have a domination heirarchy mindset, hardcore bodybuilding will always be there. All this sissy keto swimmer crossfit physique stuff is just girlyboys playing patty cake.
And bodybuilding does make fuckall. Look at all the magazines and supplement companies. It's just the bodybuilders who don't. Hundreds of millions for snake oil all pretty much dependent on the top 100 guys.

That was kind of my point, choosing the 200th best. The 200th best football or baseball player comparison is obvious.

Ironically, the plumber probably takes drugs and lifts weights. Maybe if bodybuilders learned to change some tap washers they could finally start making some decent coin.

You must be a true industry insider.
The magazines are on their knees and the overwhelming majority of supplement companies would never touch a "top 100" bodybuilder.
Here's one example for you. Stoppani turns over $4-5million per month just via bodybuilding.com. No top 100 bodybuilder needed.
One of the UK's bigger supplement companies just sold for 10x earnings. They never used a leading bodybuilder.
In fact the most profitable UK owned supplement company only uses sportsmen and fitness models. They steer clear of all bodybuilders.
US companies like Metagenics are enormously successful and yet you've probably never even heard of them because you're stuck thinking bodybuilding has some significance outside of this tiny little world that it lives in.

You can say the mags are on their knees, but they are in every grocery store and Walmart. The supplements dependent upon the top 100 guys occupy a wall in every GNC. And bodybuilding.com depends on the top 100 guys.

Bodybuilding.com makes more money and gets more traffic (a direct correlation for the way bodybuilding.com figures things out) from Stoppani and Kris Gethin than from any top 100 bodybuilder. Probably more from those two than all the bodybuilders they use combined.
There's very limited financial for things that people don't aspire to.
Female bodybuilding has died, and now the male bikini and WBFF are eating real bodybuilding shows for breakfast.
Proper bodybuilding peaked with Arnold and then had a small chance at a bounce back with the WBF and Vince Mcmahon (sp).

Ahh...But as we all know, the only hotel that they book at is the Mirage. And the room? Ice. Ice. Baby.
Bodybuilders of today don't want to hold a job but will happily clamp onto some schmoes wang. 40 or more years ago bodybuilders were normal people and got a fooking job. Today they just get a job being fooked. Lazy as a porn "star".

i doubt there have been many if any bodybuilders who became competitive for the money.
if you can make a living out of it then great, if you can't then there's people like Max Charles who i think still works as an I.T technician and Cedric McMillan who works in the armed forces.
lots of competitive bodybuilders have other careers too,
and lots of bodybuilders like Stan McQuay, Jason Huh etc have become very successful P.T's from bodybuilding.
McQuay was Dr Dre's trainer.
it has always been and always will be a career chosen for passion rather than money. a lot of normal people make mediocre money but doing so with jobs they hate.

Preist got banned over posting a copy of the bullshit contract weedy gave him. (1) coach ticket, $50/day buffet ticket, cheapassed room, unlimited use of his Mr O comp/expo pics, other bullshit.
11th: $1,000
12th: $1,000

You bring up a valid point. Many people would play in the NFL even if they only made 50k a year because they enjoy it and they get paid.
What others are saying is that despite bodybuilders "doing what they love" (I'd argue nobody ever got into and stayed in bodybuilding for the money) the elite of the "sport" make pennies. Only a fraction of the top 1% actually make a living.
Finish #7 at the premier event Arnold Classic? Enjoy your 2 grand before taxes. Number 11? Oh you will be happy with that 1 grand pay day!
It's lunacy that drives this industry and insane lunacy that people still, quite literally, destroy their bodies to compete for the rankings out of the top 5.
