Title: Stupid question about bikes for 80s/90s babies
Post by: Al Doggity on September 21, 2015, 01:00:04 PM
Anyone in their late 20s/30s remember this brand of dirtbike that was popular during the early 90s that had these plastic discs over the spoke?  ??? They had sort of an unusual name and they were really trendy but they faded out quickly. They were like the starter jackets of bikes.

LOL that's it! I had a BMX, but my neighbor won the stylin' awards with his sigma. Everybody thought this bike was the shit just because it had those damned wheel covers.  Was describing this fad to someone earlier today, but couldn't remember any relevant details  to google.

I was big into BMX when I was a kid.

Had like 4 of them at a time.

Had one of these Sigmas...

My absolute favorite was a a chrome and blue Columbia that originally only came with a rear hand brake that my parents modified for me to add a front brake and pegs all around.

This was pretty much it... I think this one is modified some as well.

The iron cross certainly wasn't on mine!

My first bike my dad bought me came with this radio. Man I would love to have that thing today just for the antique quality.

I wasn't that much of a bike aficionado and my family DEFINITELY would not have allowed me to have more than one bike at a time. Did all bmx bikes have those checkered patterned foam covers on them? If not, then that's the bike I had, except mine was red and black. I remember I let my friend ride my bike for a few hours and he came back with the foam pad on the frame missing... i almost killed him.

Those rims are sick. Huge money today if you can find them...

Find an old add for them on the right.

when I was a kid someone stole my bike.  what did my dad do??   THE COOLEST THING EVER!!!!

he took me to the dump!!  we grabbed every bike frame and bike part we could find. went home, sanded down the frames with emery cloth, painted them, repacked bearings, etc.

put together 4 totally cool, totally different bikes. every day I would ride a different one. kids were like - yer spoiled, how come you got so many bikes???  lucky kid.

I think the checkerboard pattern was somewhat common, but not all bikes had them.

Columbia had them all over, so it is pretty likely it is yours.

I actually grew up 10 miles from the Huffy Bicycle plant where these were made and I now actually work in that building. I work with a bunch of folks who use to work for Huffy before they closed this facility and they said this bike was the shit for about 6 months and then died out. I always wanted one but was a poor kid so never got one. But my old beat up Diamondback was lighter and better then the Sigma ever was.

Is it for safety?

"aero styling" was big in the 80's

it's probably reduces drag at bit a high speeds but for a bmx bike it's pretty much cosmetic
