Two of the churches I attended have done great things for countless people. A Christian company I used to work for has done unrepayable good for thousands of people throughout the years.

He sees himself emerge in his mother’s womb, he holds up his hand in the air and it has five branches; whence this devilish number five, and what has it to do with my soul? He carries a meal within him, yesterday it was a beast that could itself dash around, now I suck it up and make it part of me, and where do I begin and end? All things chain together in causes and effects, and everything he wants to grasp dissolves before the testing thought. From this moment on, he is in a state of relentless panic.
Such a ‘feeling of cosmic panic’ is pivotal to every human mind. Indeed, the race appears destined to perish in so far as any effective preservation and continuation of life is ruled out when all of the individual’s attention and energy goes to endure, or relay, the catastrophic high tension within.
The tragedy of a species becoming unfit for life by overevolving one ability is not confined to humankind. Thus it is thought, for instance, that certain deer in paleontological times succumbed as they acquired overly-heavy horns. The mutations must be considered blind, they work, are thrown forth, without any contact of interest with their environment.
In depressive states, the mind may be seen in the image of such an antler, in all its fantastic splendour pinning its bearer to the ground.

This wasn't meant as a proof of the validity of Christianity. It was simply a statement that there are specific instances where Christianity does some good in the world.
People are absolutely clueless how much charity and selfless help Christians around the world do to make this world a better place.
Or church has raised over 20 grand to help people who lost or hand great damage done to their homes in a recent flood. This is not to mention all the donated items as well as offering up their homes to help make this transition period more bearable.
This is just one church that has made a big difference in other people's lives.

I believe in a creator simply because it's hard for me to believe that all of this around us just happened purely by chance. That the universe somehow always existed and through a random concussions of molecules evolve to what we have today.
I, too, have struggled mightily with the thoughts you expressed and believe that the bad in this world far outweighs the good. That's why I never had kids (though I was always willing to adopt) and what ended my marriage.
So, to me, a far more interesting question is not whether or not a God exist, but is he good?

Its mode of action begins in the suspension of all logical thought and then renders the infected subject to an imagined all seeing force. The all seeing force keeps a tally of said person's actions, in preparation for a future trial, in a celestial realm, the exact date of which is yet to be decided.
This trial is to be presided over by the imagined force, with no recourse to appeal. If found guilty, the accused will be sent to another realm, where they will be tortured for eternity by a different imagined force. This imagine force having fallen out with the trial judge imagined force over a difference of opinion.

Last ear i donated to an african memorial fund for fallen Sudanese park rangers amd their families if you need a specific example. I believe the church should always operate tax free. If the church did not operate in this manner and did have to pay taxes, it would then become way too powerful and you would then have full blown religious entities legally operating as lobbyists looking to secure anything that will benefit them from the government writ large, thus giving them a foothold directly in the government. They would also want more representation as a tax paying body and expect more from the government with what would be, insane demands. This would allow them to permeate and then pollute further, with hooks in schools, state facilities and who knows what else.
Keeping them tax free in fact ensures that they do not have a stronger voice in political affairs.

Asking questions is pretty easy for most, so perhaps we can table that aspect and assume it's accounted for....questions have been asked basically.
So, how would you test the reality of God?
Would you follow the testimonial evidence of other believers and abide by their path to God as outlined in scripture (coming to God on his terms basically)?
Would you demand testing criteria of your own invention or a methodical, naturalistic scientific approach?
This all assumes of course that you desire to understand God's reality.
