Two fish are swimming in water and one fish turns to the other fish and says, "Hows the water?" The other fish says, "What water?"

Get em' every time!  :D :D

Freshwater fish do not actively drink water, but absorb the water through their skin and gills. On the other hand, saltwater fish do actively drink sea water. Their gills process the water and take out the salt.

The salmon is an interesting example of a fish that lives in both fresh and salt water, and consequently, they have the characteristics of both types of fish. Salmon are born in fresh water, and migrate to the ocean. While living in the ocean, they drink saltwater by opening their mouth; their gills then rid their bodies of the salt and minerals. When the salmon enters freshwater streams to spawn, they stop drinking the water and instead absorb it through osmosis (osmosis means that the water passes through the cells of the fish's skin into its body).

So saltwater fish have built in Brita filters  :o

What I am wondering.....is if fish can get thirsty surrounded by water, like Be There gets aroused when surrounded by cocks.

Saltwater and freshwater fish have entirely different hydration strategies.

Freshwater fish are immersed in a medium that has a lower solute concentration then they do internally - they are faced with the loss of salts through osmosis. Therefore they actively avoid drinking and excrete large amounts of (low solute) urine.

Saltwater fish face the opposite challenge - they tend to lose water through osmosis due to the high salt content of the ocean. The strategy of bony fish is to drink lots of saltwater and then excrete very small amounts of urine with a high solute concentration (filter the salt from the water they drink and excrete it in small amounts of urine while retaining the water).

Incidentally sharks use an alternative strategy. Unlike other fish they do not lose water to the high solute saltwater through osmosis because they have very high concentrations of urea throughout their bodies meaning that they stay (roughly) in osmotic balance with the saltwater they are immersed in (they do excrete excess salt when necessary to maintain osmoregulation).

And other marine animals have varying strategies to deal with this. For example, dolphins and most marine mammals don't drink at all, with most (all?) of their water coming from dietary sources.

I like my explanation better...plus, it is shorter and therefore more attune to the mentality here. Many of us are severely ADHD. We cannot comprehend an explanation as detailed as yours is. Our minds wander. Heck, I cannot even remember where I put my Ritalin.  ;)

The Vissy is an interesting example of a hairdresser that lives in both fresh and salt water, and consequently, they have the characteristics of both types of homé. Vissies are born in fresh water, and migrate to the ocean. While living in the ocean, they drink saltwater by opening their mouth; their gills then rid their bodies of the salt and minerals.
