Those two were excellent, especially so Mike.  I know Pearl said Ray was one of the strongest bodybuilders around though.  Bodybuilding hasn't gone downhill since then.

It's gone down the toilet.

There is no way that Vince would allow 2 known steroid users to use his gym, this was his one golden rule.
Larry Scott and Mohamed Makkaway had to prove they were clean before Vince would train them.
Even the biggest fool knows that Vince only trained natural athletes.

Thank you.  With bodybuilding I look at it in much the same way I view the cultural malaise that afflicts so much of the world.

We cannot go back and yet we continue to go backwards all the while calling it "progress".

Maybe, just maybe what is before us is within us. That is true of so much of what passes for societal zeitgeist.  We have it in our power to change but as always, change for the better is harder to achieve.  People are influenced from all directions today. In the past it was family and church (not always good, hence the lower case for the  latter of these two), now it's CNN and FOX.  And worse.

Bodybuilding is influenced by the same sort of mentally ill men that find women with 44 EEEE breasts their cup of fetish.

Oh lord, I am rambling again.  ;D

Scott only took dianabol after he won the 66 Olympia. This is why Vince threw him out his gym and Larry retired and didn't compete in 67 as he couldn't build natural muscle without Vince and the dianabol didn't compensate for Vince's glandulars and advanced multi side muscle building techniques.

Learn some history dumbass.

Ask yourself this question. Why would Vince give his life to unveiling the secrets of 4 sides to a muscle training and glandular supplementation and then allow drug taking bodybuilders to enter his gym ?   A gym so adorned by his own images as to be a veritable shrine to the outcome of scientific training and nutrition pre 1960.

If he let steroid users train at his gym would that not make the whole Vince Gironda mystique and legend nothing but smoke and mirrors?

I am fed up with the disrespect shown to Vince on here.

Gironda let Arnold train at his gym. That says it all. Larry's physique changed in a very short period in the early sixties. We all suspected the reason for his amazing gains. Vince was an intelligent man so I doubt he was unaware of what his stars were doing.

Why indeed?  If by "smoke and mirrors" you meant dope and coke, I would say you are correct.  Kommiefornia (where Vince's place was located) has always encouraged the use of such all natural substances while eschewing and demonizing tobacco based products and this in spite of the fact that the Native Amuricans gave that  leaf to whitey.  And now they're saying "second hand vapor" is eeeeevile too.

I am certain the Vince's Gym was a palace of purity, peace and all things pleasant with all natural camel dung laden with strawberries and honey incense burning 7/24 to keep the musky odor of scrotum from the air.

Or something like that.

Yes, yes...

I almost forgot...

Fertile raw eggs, mixed with heavy whipping cream and Rheo H. Blair's secret protein powder formula that duplicated the molecular structure of human breast milk that doubles an infant's growth rate every 6 months... Sipped through a pinched straw to mimic the feeding rate of a pre-natal baby...
Plus, Vince's glandulars and plant sterols...

Scott simply admitted to dianabol use as a diversion to what he really used to get his physique.

what was true then is still true.  genetics plus drugs plus (less nowadays) hard work = the trophy.

Scott wasn't great genetically except for that freakin bicep that went alll the way into the forearm, like sergio. He said that he was told so early in his training.  He focused on his tricep but someone told him no, you got the bicep.

also he used to take dianabol until he pissed blood, then he would back off

and ps i believe that he worked very hard, which most people don't understand nowadays

I remember Vince got Mohamed into shape drug free for the NY night of the champions around 1982 and then matched him pose for pose from the audience in a bizarre vodka fuelled performance complete with fringed cowboy jacket.

One things for sure, Vince got Mohammed into the best drug free condition of anyone at that time.

Actually you are correct in Mohammed's "claim" to be drug free during the NY NOC. He admits to using steroids before and after that and for the 83 Olympia. He also admits to using diuretics. It's safe to say that his mass was built through years of training and drug use.

This should answer all the doubters:

That old dude doesn't know what he's talking about. Larry took steroids after he left Vince's and used them for his comeback in 1979 but without Vince's techniques he didn't make it. As for being a physical wreck like the old man is implying, well Larry looked great up to the last year or two before he died. That old black guy looks like he's never seen a weight in his life.

i think he saw a few , he used to train with tom sansone till leroy almost ripped his foot off in a motorcycle accident..... sansone early death was blamed on steroid abuse.... whether it was or not is debatable.

Funk I think you will find that the picture of the black guy you posted is a young Sergio Oliva when he had hair. It's certainly not the old rambling guy in that video.

I knew Vince and I knew Larry and I was in Vince's Gym more than a few times, I can't say who did or who did not take steroids back in them good old days because I never watch anyone ingest them or shoot them up ..... but I personally knew the individuals who are the topics of this conversation.

And please notice that I did not use the term "accuse' in the about sentence, simply due to the fact that steroid used 'accusations" back then were unheard of.

Nor was the use of roads back then ever considered to be as dispicable as many road free individuals considerable it to be today.

Back then the use of steroids was not a felony and not even frowned upon.

The only reason why roid use was disliked back then was that those who used them had an advantage over those who did.

And those outside the 'lifting world' could care less simply due to the fact that it was of no concern to them or they simply knew nothing about them.

The only thing I ever heard Vince complain about was squatting.

Larry squatted elsewhere while Vince expounded on the benefits of protein ... the when, the where, and the  how it should be 'taken'.

Great pics of Sergio. You can see he was more ripped in his pre steroid days in the bottom picture in the late 1950's but really blew up on D Ball in the top pic which I think is like 1972.

Actually, he took one look at Sergio Oliva and saw the writing on the wall. Said this himself.

You should maybe take a peek at the picture again.. It pretty clearly says Leroy Colbert. You are making yourself look stupid man. You cant possibly know anything about the history of BB and have no clue who Leroy was / is...

Awwww Crownshep  >:(

I was just about to reveal that when Sergio first swam from Cuba to escape communism he picked the name Leroy Colbert because he thought it sounded American.
Joe Weider thought Leroy was too uncle Tomish so he picked the name Sergio Oliva and got him to change his name, shave his head  and reinvent himself.

Wonder how many would have scrambled to prove me wrong and call me a fool ...... :D

Oh and I know Larry was a Dbol freak. :P

Funk thanks for posting the great pics of Leroy. There is no doubt that Leroy was way ahead of everyone else in the 1950's , an absolute genetic freak and a more impressive physique than Sergio a decade later.  If it wasn't for his accident he would have wiped the floor with Park, Pearl and the other top guys in the later 50's to mid 60's. He also seemed to be the one guy who Joe Weider actually liked and treated as a friend rather than an exploited meal ticket like he did with all the others.  His youtube films are great.
Sorry for the wind up but being semi retired I have too much time on my hands.

Dam. Look at that shelf Colbert's upper chest makes. Also, long time ago, prolly 25 years ago I was shopping in this mall in some clothing store. I was jacked n young back then. So this black girl who works there started talking to me asking me about lifting etc. She says she either had a famous dad or grandpa but I prolly never heard of him. I swear it was dad but my menory is fading. She was trying to do modeling n was very pretty. So anyway she says his name was Leroy Colbert. It was cool because I knew who he was so she was happy I'd heard of him. Pretty gay story but I forgot all about that incident until this thread.

That isn't exactly true from what I heard. He stopped taking dianabol because it conflicted with his Mormon religion and he also felt like a fraud because he looked nothing like his pictures without the drugs. It had nothing to do with Vince. Horworth, Scott, and every well known champion out of Vince's was a user.

they didn't want to give the secret away.... this was done for several reasons,   but mostlythat if everyone would take it they would have to up the dosages to stay ahead of everyone even then they were aware of the health risks associated with these magic beans....

I suspect it was also so that Gironda & co. could attribute their results/success to the training methods and supplements they just happened to be selling to the public.

Maybe had they been selling D-bol instead, it would have been a different story.
