YouTube has exposed the truth: There is no shortage of people in the world who have heaps of talent. For all manner of things. Used to be, folks figured some popular singer was some kind of special, for example. We now know great singers are essentially a dime a dozen.
But unless you get lucky and hook up with quality management and quality songwriters and producers, you're going nowhere.
And it also helps hugely if you're attractive. Look at Swift, Underwood, Perry, etc. And if you're not good looking, you'd better have a unique and interesting look. Lady Ga Ga, for example.

OLD SCHOOL< I was stationed in Subic for a while and was a regular at a good number of the locals' birthdays, weddings, funerals etc. and there was always some young kid with a shit-load of talent that blew my sox off.
Beautiful voices on these young kids. And it's good to see that the internet opens up the world for them.

Pat on my back time ...... I have been somewhat of a remote cause for the success of about 5 old time friends who have made a success of themselves in Hollywood major motion pictures.
And the strange thing about that was that I was only involved with the assistance of the five mentioned above.
So far I haVE A REMOTE batting AVERAGE OF 100% and always manage to argue with those who have returned from Hollywood because they did not find work and contend that it was impossible.
But right now I am having difficulty finding an agent for a major GetBig player, so my batting average may come down a bit.
