Looking like a different man after shedding an estimated 100 pounds, John has battled the bulge for years. After Goodman topped the scales at 400 pounds, the actor has taken action. Goodman achieved his weight loss through the years with a series of healthy steps.
Step One: Stop Drinking Alcohol & Consuming Sugar
John revealed that he made the decision to break up with booze a few years ago. Feeling better, Goodman then eliminated sugar from his life to boost his weight loss and health.
Step Two: Work Out And Hire A Health Coach
Determined to keep the momentum going, John made the decision to hire a health coach. John estimates he now exercises six times a week, and he feels energized by the feeling. “I’m breaking a sweat but I’m not going nuts,” emphasized Goodman.
Step Three: Be Honest About Challenges
John Goodman is candid in calling himself an alcoholic. John revealed that he feels that his brain has an issue with the dopamine receptors.
“In my brain my dopamine receptors are blocked or something. I don’t receive enough of it, which is probably why I was an alcoholic for 30 years. Well, I still am one but I haven’t had a drink in quite some time. And I’m sure that all had a lot to do with what I do for a living.”
Goodman is proud of his weight loss, and he’s determined to continue.
“I wish I wasn’t as fat as I am. It just bothers me. When I saw a film in which I played Santa Claus recently, I walked away thinking, ‘This is just God-awful. I look terrible. I want to have my mouth sewn shut.’And it got me to lose about 70lb,” said John. :'(
Goodman previously went to Promises Treatment Center in Malibu for alcoholism, after which he stopped drinking alcohol. Now that Goodman has succeeded with his weight loss, he also takes more delight in acting.
Asked whether he feels happier about acting or food, the answer comes quickly. “Acting,” affirmed the newly svelte actor.

Giving up ALL sugar has to be one of the hardest things to do. It's in everything. With a diet that is truly sugar free doesn't leave much to eat. Life just sucks and I don't feel it is really necessary.
Can you imagine with his celeb life style always being surrounded with some of the best (enjoyable) food available and not being to eat most of it? Doesn't seem worth it to me.
I can imagine how TA would poo-poo this no sugar at all diet.

The simplest eating plan that is healthy is to just give up processed foods. Basically do your grocery shopping in the outside isles where the real foods are, and avoid the middle isles with the processed crap. Sugar is fine if it's natural sugars from fruits and veggies.

Giving up drinking is huge. It's not just the alcohol, but the invariable pizza that follows. Back when I was drinking, a night out usually totalled about 2k calories, easy.
Giving up sweets, completely, is unsustainable. Better to limit them. Are you really gonna go through the entire holiday season without eating a sweet? Do you really want to go through life without ever eating ice cream again?

Sugar, whether in its natural form or as high fructose corn syrup, affects the brain by boosting levels of dopamine. Dopamine is the same chemical that’s released when an alcoholic drinks. Dopamine is sometimes called the reward chemical because it creates feelings of pleasure – the very feelings the brain wants to replicate. Sugar also increases levels of another hormone called serotonin, which plays a role in mood as well.
While many of us understand the effect sugar has on our weight, its ability to affect hormones related to mood can compel some individuals to engage in addictive behavior. Just as an alcoholic loses control of his or her ability to control drinking, someone who consumes too much sugar may eat uncontrollably, often referred to as binge eating.
Similar to alcoholism, those with a sugar addiction can experience similar withdrawal-like symptoms when sugar consumption is suddenly stopped. For instance, heavy sugar users might feel anxiety or shakiness if they abruptly eliminate their sugar intake. While these symptoms don’t have the potential to cause physical harm (as can occur with alcohol withdrawal), the fact that someone experiences them indicates their brain has been altered in such a way that they feel the need for more of the substance.
Science supports the link between sugar and alcohol. For instance, researchers in one study showed women pictures of a chocolate milkshake made with Haagen-Dazs ice cream. The women who had reported previous problems with food dependence or food addiction showed high levels of brain activity in regions that have been connected to drug and alcohol cravings.
Additionally, research suggests there may be a biological connection between having a sweet tooth and an alcohol abuse problem. For example, a study of more than 300 children found that those with a heightened preference for sugary foods and beverages were more likely to have a family history of alcoholism. These children were also more likely to have a family history of depression, which is an additional risk factor for alcohol abuse. These findings do not mean that everyone with a taste for sweets is destined to develop depression or alcohol problems. It does, however, suggest a connection that may be important for those trying to stay sober.
