according to ken gold's gym was 2 weeks away from closing , when he decided to buy it installing ken waller as manager the rest is history...
-
When I met Waller he was great. Friendly with a good sense of humor too. Sprague? Gay porn. Whoring yourself out is not conducive to being worthy of admiration. That doesn't mean you can't change, but as always change for the better is what's needed.
Dave Dupree and Bill Grant were nice guys too. This isn't to say I was part of the crowd at Gold's when it was gold, but rather the majority of the guys I had the good fortune to meet and speak with were great.
-

Wow, that is crazy.
Yup. I bought one (or two, my mind is foggy... ;D) from Waller the first time I visited the original Gold's. It was a XXXL size and Waller (with a big, good natured smile on his face) said to me something along the lines of "Good luck filling that out, kid!".
He made a good impression on an impressionable kid that day. I hope to never forget moments like that. I had that shirt until it was dust... ;D

Drasin should have been given a lifetime comp just to start with. It reminds me of how badly Dave Draper was burned on the ads he did.

True. The Bomber should never have settled until the dust did from a court decision. If he had, he might've "owned" Schmoe Weider.

I'm going to have to find that video and watch it again. It's been a few years since I've seen it, but I clearly remember thinking how awful it all was. Not Weider's finest moment.

bill grant used to come to my neck of the woods like 2 or 3 times a year always seemed like a nice guy, he would mc the local contests even had one named after him for a time the bill grant classic which he had in atlantic city too. he was in ill health a few years back 65 emergency room visits but i hear he's well again...as can be seen in first pic which is from this year.

I was referring to Bill Grant in my post who i wrote to on Facebook. Bill Pearl I have only admiration for. A Manīs Man. served his country. My telephone conversations with Bill Pearl i cherish.

I thought it was Chuckie Dunbar??

TOMMY, I have to respectfully disagree.
Ken Sprague was the Santa Monica Gold's Gym owner, and as far as I can recall ... he had nothing to do with the Venice location.
By that time he and his wife had relocated up north a bit to the Seattle area.
I realize that you are an expert in these matters so maybe you can help me out with he following which may be of some interest to a couple of old time GetBiggers......
Can you name each owner of the Gold Gym 'brand' from the start?
Including the location of each and the approximate monthly/yearly membership fees from day #1 to the present?
I think that I am the last remaining individual on this planet who can sort of recall that Joe's first and original location was just steps away from the parking lot of the high rise building that is now called The Sea Castle.
I never did meet Joe in that Sea Castle location but I'm 99% sure that that small gym was full of his 'home-made" equipment, but there seems to be no one alive today who can help me verify that ancient part of Gold's Gym history.
That Sea Castle building (just steps away from the original Muscle Beach) has some interesting history behind it which I'll do my best to describe some day.
It did play a part in the historical significance of Muscle Beach.
-
I knew Dupree, Waller and Grant.
-

:D I had a little help- Gary and I are friends on FB and he posted the pic and included all the names. I was good for four out of six.

Agreed StuntM. I actually grabbed that list and description from Gary's FB page. Didn't notice the Venice connection.

Sprague owned the original Venice location from 1972 to 1979 and certainly owned it during the Pumping Iron era according to this interview with Rick.
He converted into his family home for a while thereafter.
