That night Mike Tyson knew that his whole life had built to that moment.
He had been groomed like a gladiator. He was so tuned to that fight. Because he felt that unless he performed in that ring. That no one would except him outside of that ring. That Tyson that Spinks met that night no other boxer professionally or as an amateur had seen that Mike Tyson. Other than Mike himself. Mike Tyson was at the best he could be that night.
-
Spinks was a great fighter but he was a blown up light heavy weight fighter. He fought Tyson at his savage best.
-
I just watched the interview where Mike said that, in prison, he was called a "tree jumper". A tree jumper is a rapist. They hide in a tree and jump on their victim.
-
Tyson that night was a beast no doubt..... That being said, he was never the best heavyweight of all time though, in the 70's he would have lost a few fights- Ali, Foreman, Holmes, and Frazier gives him serious trouble, Liston puts him down too. Go back farther and Louis gets him, prime Walcott too, Marciano puts him away too because of his unmatched heart and conditioning and "Susie Q" eventually finds Mike's chin. The great Cuban fighter Teofilio Stevenson would give Tyson trouble too.
Tyson was a BEAST , no doubt.... but he was not the best ever, not even close .

I agree he fought cans his whole career. I always wanted to see Foreman knock his head off his shoulders. Holyfield showed the blue print to handle a bully like Tyson can't show fear tie him up hit him with uppercuts. He puncked him twice Foreman would of buried him.

After that body shot at 0:53, Spinks was done.

I think that the left upper cut that landed before the shot to the body may have been more damaging.

i have been watching boxing many years.
i really feel tyson squandered a great talent. instead of improving he went backwards.
to much to fast he didnt have to struggle to get to the top. holyfield had been in some awesome wars even before he had become hw champ.
at cruiser weight holyfield was an animal

He didn't really squander too much... He was World HW Champion

Why do people constantly refer to Spinks as "blown up Heavy" when guys later like Holyfield showed how you move up and take over. Spinks height, reach and weight were all greater than Tyson so if he's a "blow up" heavyweight what is Tyson a blown up lightweight?!?
-
he didnt build upon what he started went downhill.
-
Tyson that fought Spinks may be best heavy weight boxer ever...
-
Spinks with knee wraps lol
-
I trained in Larry Holmes gym for a decade including his "losses" to Spinks and Tyson and Larry always said Tyson was a much better boxer and fighter. He privately used to admit how good (fast, brutal, strong) Tyson was even though in interviews he'd complain about age, time to train, even hit with elbows--clearly un true...

While I pretty much agree, I'm confused by the timing of this post. 1988 was almost 30 years ago.

Darren, you were a lot more fun when we thought you were a midget in a pink shirt. Now that we know you're a smelly Paki midget all of the fun is gone.
Shitbag.

What's his Facebook? I've got to see this! Bet he's posing with guns and shit.

Mike Tyson also said he sustained himself from ejacultion for 5 years before that fight. It obviously helps focus 8)

An old Foreman would have got battered by Tyson. Even a young Foreman was not the quickest, the old version would have been made to look like a heavy bag by Tyson.

Tyson was an overrated fraud. Built his career building up KOs against tomato cans too afraid to even throw a punch. Matched up against the worst ever heavyweight champs of any era (Berbick, Thomas, Bonehugger), allowed to gain glory by beating up an ancient Larry Holmes and a blown up skinny fat 205 lb Michael Spinks in the most fraudulent Fight of the Century ever and then got absolutely schooled by a journeyman Buster Douglas who never beat anyone of significance and then out-bullied by Evander Holyfield before revealing himself to be a quitter and coward against Holyfield II and Lennox Lewis before proving he was always overrated by getting the snot beaten out of him by Danny Williams and finally quitting once more against Kevin McBride. Every fighter who wasn't afraid of Tyson and took his shots either went the distance or beat him. Once his invincible mystique was exposed as a lie by Douglas, he proved himself nothing more than a bully who gives up at the first sign of resistance.

Late 80s/very early 90s Foreman would have clobbered any version of Tyson, for not talking about the 70s young prime one, would punch him off the planet, slow my ass... Now, Tyson was great admittedly, would have beat Ali easy, but clearly not the greatest (no one is) and massively overrated, he had a short peak and strange career... Against 45-47yo super slow Foreman yeah, a not shot Tyson would take an easy UD probably, but all the other versions are a nightmare for him, including the fresh comeback one...
-
Ali handles Tyson no problem, Tyson didn't have the heart of Frazier and Ali would have gotten inside of Tyson's head and had him beat before the fight,
Holmes in his prime puts him away too, for those who don't know boxing and think Marciano would have been destroyed by Tyson watch Ali's interview with Cosell where he says he didn't know if he could have beaten Marciano, and that he thought Marciano was tougher than Frazier- said Marcianos punches hurt and he was an old man ....
Louis was 215-220 when Marciano put him away, so the idea that he couldn't handle a big, elusive, skilled heavyweight is ridiculous ( yeah, Louis was old, but still dangerous and skilled)

So a prime 70s Foreman would punch Tyson off the planet and Tyson would beat Ali easy....Yet Ali actually destroyed a prime 70s Foreman
Great logic ???

Thats a pretty accurate summary.

He was 37 so not that old.

I don't know, Frazier and Norton always gave Ali trouble and Foreman bout killed them both real quick. It all comes down to fight styles. Plus I wouldn't say Ali destroyed George, he just let him punch him self out at the expense being hit a few hundred times.
