Title: What books are you fellas reading?
Post by: Never1AShow on November 06, 2015, 12:11:56 PM
Getbig Thunderdome is clearly a place of literary scholarship so I figured I'd ask what books you all were currently enjoying reading.

I just finished Ernest Cline's new one, Armada.  An okay read but not anywhere near as good as his last, Ready Player One.

I also loved The Martian.

Just for clarity, I am excluding The Bible because I presume that would be on everyone's list already.

How would I ever find that thread, 275, it's not in the G and O Thunderdome.  Thanks, though I suspect that selections here may differ because the posters are less faint of heart.

Last month or two -

T J English - The Westies. An old, and well respected true crime book about NY's old Hell's Kitchen Irish mob faction. Also his book "Whitey's Payback", which is a collection of his writings for various magazines for the last 20 years or so. A decent portion of which deals with Whitey Bulger.

I re-read a bit of George Pelecanos's "The Double" and "King Suckerman", simply because they were on the table, and I enjoy his writing style. He and Robert Crais have slowly made their way to the top of the mystery writers pile now that Block, Westlake, and Leonard have slowed down or passed.

Ran through an old pulp novel - Dan J Marlowe's "The Name of The Game is Death". It's based around a bank robbery, and reads like an old "Parker" style novel, just a bit darker, and more fanciful.

Right now, I'm 2/3rds of the way through Chester Himes's "Real Cool Killers". It's an old book, based around a pair of Harlem based detectives. It's a fun book, and the interplay between the white and black characters is an interesting snap shot of the time. You do have to make a few leaps of faith with some minor plot points though.

Next on the burner is probably "Clubland" about the whole Michael Alig / Peter Gatien saga.

Richard Wright: Daemonic Genius, it's a good read. I've read it several times.
Also Robert Greene's "Mastery".

The Bible................... ........................ ...........(by GH15)

Would be good to find some time for the "leasure reading", reading mostly technical stuff now and fondly remember these times when I used to be swept away by some good book (like Financier by Dreiser or when I was a kid - Huckleberry Fin, Lost island or whatever the title ). I did not need a Tv just red a book after a book, later on Internet started to steal the book time. I feel sorry for current teenagers, many of them will be illiterate morons due to parents not emphasizing and teaching him the pleasure of a good book and technologies creating an illusion of "reading" a lot (social networks doesn't count, sadly).

Just finished "Unbroken". Really amazing what the soldiers went through in that era. Most of the attention was given to the European Theatre so a lot of people just don't appreciate or know just how brutal, cruel and heartless the Japanese were. Just a warrior culture. It's amazing to how they are now compared to the modern day Sparta they were then.

I lived in Torrance, CA and the surrounding area for almost twenty years and use to drive past Louis Zamperini's house regularly without even knowing it. At one point I had an apartment just couple of blocks from where he lived.

Damn I wish I could have met him in person.

Among other things, I'm trying to bring up my programming skills.

Coursera offers a course in Python basics based on this book:

I'm also reading the book that book was based on: Think Python.

There's really no excuse for being a useless POS, these days, as there's so much knowledge available online about pretty much everything.
