From early August to mid Oct, I focused more on cardio. Wanted to get "shredded". I found my appetite skyrocketed, I needed to nap more and my body just looked flat. I actually gained a few pounds in the process. I stopped cardio. Focused on lifting only and have lost about 10 pounds, look fuller, feel better, eating better without the nasty cravings. Fuck cardio. Sure it might be good for the heart but it does shit for fat loss.

how long did you your sessions last?
No idea how people do it for like 45 min, many times a week. Would rather just eat less...

went up to 1 hour sometimes. I bought Amazon Prime and would just watch an hour long show while doing it. It was useless. I was constantly hungry after doing cardio. Would fall asleep instantly while sitting.

I've never done an hour of cardio. Must suck ass hardcore. No thanks...
-
You need cardio AND diet to get really shredded. It's an absolute must especially if you're over thirty.
-
It absolutely helps fat loss, but not if you put the calories back.
I prefer weight training and conditioning to be mostly synonomous, not caring about aesthetics all too much. I prefer a good combo of strength and the ability to run, play sports, etc... So I eat, because after working out for 1-1.5 hours with no rest, you get hungry.
But it's personal.
If I wanted to get shredded, I'd up the intensity, shorten the duration, and eat less.

But why bother and be totally miserable???? Lean is good enough, fuck being all skinny faced and "shredded" nobody can tell shirt on the difference, they just see a person draggin ass and looking unhappy.
Biggest waste of time ever and sacrifice of muscle mass in the process to impress some dudes....

Only miserable if you allow yourself to be. You get over it in 10 days. My diet is enjoyable I eat a ton of sushi, good steaks, buffalo, ostrich etc..
Also I like being jacked and able to play full court basketball every week.

You have to mix up cardio.
I do two runs a week:
1. 5k with 8x50 sprints and 4x440 speed work mixed in.
2. 10k at jogging pace
Both are outdoors. I don't know how people run on treadmills.

Treadmills as a last resort - like the woods best, but it cuts down the speed a bit.

I like the dirt, as well. You can get away with concrete when you're young. With age, the body starts to rebel.
Caught an Ultra Running Podcast with a guest who had just run the NYC Marathon. This guy regularly runs 50k & 100k trail races. He said the 26.2 miles on Asphalt, which is way softer than concrete, was much harder on his body than 100k on dirt.

Rucking at night, in the woods, or trail runs.

I agree with that. I'm not into that kind of running, but I can rip out a 7-10 mile trail run on occasion. Very cool feeling when the body hits that autopilot stage and you're just kind of floating through the woods.

Sex.
It's called sex... But I don't last long enough, lol...

cardio for weight loss purposes is literally a waste of time, an hours cardio that only burns off around 400 cals???
Just eat 400 cals less and do something enjoyable with that hour.
We had a guy on here doing over 2 hours cardio a day and eating 3600 cals at a bodyweight of 180lbs, no wonder he ended up fat as fuck after 6 months diet.
-
That's because high intensity interval cardio is ideal vs. traditional gerbil
on a wheel. Much less time and much more fat loss. Research it.
-
Some leaner people like myself just don't need it, a nice long walk is okay though.
-

This, if you dont let yourself become a fat fuck in the first place you dont need it.

Personal view: cardio very over rated for long lasting fat loss. Too much cardio actually can have a muscle wasting effect on some people, loss of muscle mass that was worked so hard for. For what their worth, a few suggestions for fat loss, rather than endless time on the treadmill.
Try running on heavy beach sand and watch the difference that makes on the body. 20 minutes should do it. If running on sand hills, 10 minutes should do it. Run in bare feet.
Suggest also interval training. The Tabata method is a good start, 8 to 12 minutes will do it. Many other forms of interval workouts.
Increase the pace of a workout, reducing rest time between sets and exercises. Most guys are just stroking it during gym time..... hanging out, rather than really working out. 45 seconds , as an average time between sets. 60-90 seconds between squats, DL's or cleans.
Checkout the PHA system of training......stamina without a doubt. Also circuit training, the correct way.
Some BB'ers will run 20 to 45 minutes after a good BB'ing session. If wanting serious muscle building results after a serious workout...don't run right after. Save that for another time. Want to keep the pump and the blood, (with all the bodies natural muscle building chemicals release from that workout) in the area of the body part just worked....than don' run.
Weight training based workouts can do much to greatly increase the endurance and fat loss, and still build solid muscle mass.
Good Luck.
-
Combo of both works best for me.
-
Sex.
It's called sex... But I don't last long enough, lol...
I prefer to see it as HIT, as we all know short bursts are scientifically proven to burn more fat....

Truth. The 10 miles a week I run works out to about a whopping 1000 calories, or ~150 a day, not even a Snickers bar burned.
Cardio is for overall health and fitness with a byproduct that you burn a few calories.
Weight loss and maintenance is all about diet. Sorry fat folks. The truth hurts sometimes.

Have you tried hip hop abs ???
-
Full body HIT with small breaks (to change weights and spinlocks and shit) has my aging heart up to 160. I count that as cardio, although not an athlete. I did notice it helped in horrible paddles surfing (actually bodyboarding but that is a can of worms to explain here).rn
What is the calorie burn on intense lifts per hour?
-
an hours cardio that only burns off around 400 cals???
An hours' wuss cardio, sure.
Plenty of ways to get that to 800-900
-

that would be HIT cardio, taking you to the point of muscular failure due to lactic acid build up.
Cardio in the true sense shouldnt do that, its meant to be aerobic as opposed to anaerobic.
-
Do an hour of low intensity cardio 7x a week every morning before breakfast followed by 30 minutes after training later in the day. On the weekend which are my off training days I do an hour a night as well. Never had any issues and keep me noticeably leaner. However everyone responds differently.
-
The point is that exercise is an extremely inefficient way to reduce body fat as compared to caloric restriction.

From my experience a lot of these HIT Cardio guys donīt last long on a distance stamina run. I used to run with a Guy who was a good distance runner and weight trainer. when running we never did so called HIT cardio although we called it Fartlek training which has been around many years long before it became known by the masses. Does a Bodybuilder need to run miles? no of course not but if you want to really be in shape then i think a longer run has itīs place. the Guy i trained with went SAS and passed.. so i think it has itīs place. Running with him was a real Bastard.

I see boxers running long distances at a moderate pace for hours, yet it would make sense to do hit cardio as they use energy fast in short bursts in the ring, seems distance cardio does have its place for overall fitness, weight loss, Nah.

Not HIT, you can add a backpack with weight, do the same cardio, and increase the calories burned.

I never understood why boxers run long distance when their sparring is already a shit load of cardio. Get in a ring and start moving around for a few rounds and you'll be gassed. Doing that daily over and over is cardio enough to last a full fight. The extra running outside seems useless.
-

If your muscles give out before your lungs its not cardio.

well if you had ever boxed you would know why you do it. Short burst of power are needed sure but you need stamina and..lots off it. Also stamina in your lower body.. sparring alone wonīt do it. Tyson did Squats but also distance running.
-

Agree. You have to be doing some majorly "not even trying cardio" for it only burn that many calories. Which I guess is the majority of cardio you see people doing in gyms, though.
-
If your muscles give out before your lungs its not cardio.
Shows your body is inefficient in transporting oxygen needed to fuel the muscles. This is common in unfit people. The legs will tire first.
-

People drive to the gym and then walk on a treadmill, FFS walk it to the gym.

Or you are very good at taking your muscles to failure by isolating them.
I can burn my legs out in 10 minutes on a stationary bike.

I can do it with leg extensions in one set but it is not cardio. Talking about two diffrent worlds here.

By developing the Aerobic system you raise the threshold for when the anaerobic system kicks in. The latter is what causes you to gas. So, you want to conserve that type of energy.
-
no it doesnt
Nah uh, Joon said so.
-
cardio is NOT necessary in most cases....just eat less ffs....exercise to build muscle...diet to lose fat its simple in MOST cases...always some exceptions but it is not mandatory....lots of people get contest shredded with zero cardio
-
I ride my bike to work, about an hour each way. Would be depressed out of my mind otherwise.
Don't know how people can stand being sedentary. Drives me crazy.
If fat loss is all diet, why is everyone constantly dieting... Can't you maintain the weight you want by just 'eating less'?
???
-

Absolutely wrong... I can burn 1k in an hour with zero perceptible lactic acid build up.

I know, thats my point.
Cardio should take place with oxygen present (aerobic), if you burn out the muscle before you gas its not cardio.(anaerobic)
-
I also do a high intensity cardio water sport now along with bodybuilding and have for over half the time I've trained. It helps keeps me as lean as I can be BUT you do get cravings and eat more. You definitely hold much more fluid and don't look as ripped after a few weeks of doing both which hurts fullness because you're not really holding bodyfat. The best I look is a few training sessions after a week rest period because there's no stress on the body making you hold excess fluid.
If you want to look leaner it's all diet and you need lower intensity cardio if you want to do any just to keep the metabolism going a little more. Diet manipulation is the key any hard cardio just makes you eat too much.
-

yes and no. I understand where you are going with your point but your largest muscle group is quads. Now going on your hypothesis two runners one untrained and one trained should "gas" out at the same point? no of course they donīt ..why is this? A good conditioned cardio vascular system is much more efficient in carrying oxygenated blood around your body. It is so. The non conditioned runner will feel his quads "burn" much..much faster.
-
Tons of fluid retaining, overeating elite marathoners, cyclists, swimmers out there... But I suppose that's not 'high intensity' ::)
Then I I guess the obese sprinters are the best evidence...
Plain and simple, bodyfat level depends in a host of factors, not one in isolation. You can find ripped people in any sport, not just the starvation sport (bodybuilding)

I'm talking over a few weeks you hold more fluid. I still looked ripped generally. Even just training with weights will cause this just harder cardio will cause you to hold more, sometimes not as bad. I'm not talking about bodyfat the guys you mentioned will of course hold low bodyfat but don't have as much muscle either to see what a bodybuilder sees.
All sports require high intensity. Going through the water is very hard, harder than say running without the same resistance.
-

yes, 80% diet, 20% exercise.
-
Never understood the one hour of cardio for bodybuilders. I see it in the gym all the time. Guys walking on a treadmill slower than the walk they took going from the parking lot to the gym door. Run hard for a mile or at the most 3 miles. A guy in his twenties should be able to easily run two miles in 16 minutes after lifting.
It's intensity over duration when you want to combine cardio effectively with lifting.

not everyone walks for an hour. I think and not boasting here but i could take a weighted rucksack of say 35 kilos + cross country and lose most here.

question for you Donny
You seem to give out a lot of advice (ie cardio thread, over 45 thread). Dont you think it is a bit ridiculous, especially on this site for someone who we have no idea what they look like physically to give out training advice? After all, we all clearly saw the fault in that when that pumpster or pumpsomething guy who gave out tons of advice turned out to be an obese wooden toothed frightening sight who had no comprehension of training. I think the majority of people on here also lean to the side that you dont train at all and are simply an out of shape alcoholic who thinks he knows a lot.

They can't. Those who fail at weight loss view dieting as a temp job, when it needs to be a lifestyle change.
The failure to make this distinction is the reason for the "Yoyo" effect.

yes and the same with cardio ..you gotta do it and regular. I can assure anyone on here that if you follow a cardio training programme year round and lift you will not be fat. Itīs about stickability .. you can or you canīt.

I for one could never say enough thanks to honour those who have served. It takes massive balls and is an amazing contribution to their country.
You however represent the opposite.
You disgust me, and others with your fake war stories, lying about serving and trying to take advantage of people hoping they kiss your ass. It is beyond clear you lie abut serving in the army, and I hope one day someone who has put their life on the line kicks your drunk skull in for lying about it. Lying about serving in the military is as low as one can go, and you reached that level. You are a shitty human being Donny.

This is fact. If you served and proved it on here, I would kiss your ass and never say a bad word about you again. Men and women who serve are remarkable (other than Navy Mike who is an asshole), and I am so thankful for them. You on the other hand have fabricated stories of serving to make yourself look good. However, by never proving it you have more than shown you are lying about this and are an embarrassment and need to apologize to people who actually did serve.

The body is compensating for the over activity with under activity, and for excessive calorie burning with excessive calorie consumption.
That's why it's pointless to do cardio for weight loss. It's essentially a break even proposition.
-
Obviously if you are a 170lb ectomorph, cardio is not going to be overly useful to you and may even be detrimental. However if you put on mass very easy even when eating clean, then cardio can be very beneficial.

This is true. The Model Jodi "Leigh" Miller could benefit from distance running which would slim down her thighs, give her a taller appearance, and bring her closer to the runways of New York and Paris 8)

A 25 minute run at a 7-8 min mile pace 3 times a week has always worked best for me. It's short enough to not kill your joints. Also it's higher intensity and great for health and overall fitness. If your goal is to maximize muscle gain then perhaps the long drawn out cardio sessions are better but I've never been able to do them. Can't stand em. 2 hours a day on a treadmill is ridiculous unless it's your full time job and your paycheck depends on it.
-
Walk your dog... fuck your broad. Cardio.
If you dont have a dog or a woman in your life.... you're most likely a creep.

I've read stuff that says this approach is best. Aside from injury, running longer distances has diminishing returns from a health perspective, and is only about performance after that.
-
Does anyone else like to do some vigorous exercise every day? I work a desk job and bodybuilding workouts didn't really 'do it' for me.
So far I really enjoy cardio with 'purpose'. Sports, or riding my bike instead of taking the bus or driving.
