I have (as I assume many of us have) a female family member who is very overweight and am worried about her health. How do you encourage them to clean up their diet and exercise to lose the weight. She was on a diet a short time seemed to do well but gave up eventually.
Not my wife, I'm single, just a family member.
Suggestions?

A waste of time unless they're ready. You'll hear nothing but lies, excuses, BS, and probably alienate someone. Even worse... you'll end up hearing"I should have listened".
I tried for years to get my sister to do something about her weight. Got every excuse from "I love food too much" to "The bible says it's not what goes into the mouth that condemns a man but what comes out of it" and an opinion that the Lord blesses everything Christians eat so there's never any need to be on a diet, LOL! Now her fat ass is on metformin, LOL! When the topic comes up "Keep eating, they'll just give you insulin and other drugs" is all that gets said. It's what she wants to hear and I'm not wasting time giving advice she won't follow.

You really can't. There's no good way to intervene. Maybe try inviting her to do physically taxing activities. Something that she might like and decide to get fit for... A negative approach is guaranteed to fail.

I give them encouraging nicknames like "Hippobottomus" and "Sally McJigglebutt"

impossible task. she needs to want it

Do spend time with her, talk with her and motivate her (don't talk about diet). Create some healthy activities that can further help to loose weight indirectly.

Hi, Alex.

this is the one thing most personal trainers/srength coaches try t avoid
family members and your girl are the hardest people to get fit - they take what you tell them with a grain of salt, there is no incentive for them to get fit - it goes against most of their lifestyle choices up to this point
if they have to pay for a trainer - they show up, they listen and execute, and they complain less
just my $0.02

They're food addicts and an addict usually only changes after hitting rock bottom. Even then most never change.
It's bizarre, self-destructive behavior but there's nothing you can do.

Calfzilla, any update on this chubby little bastard? Is she still shoplifting Cadbury's creme eggs and wolfing down all the sausage rolls at the buffet?
-
only by my example and my behavior.

Kindly first observe if she's food addict or lazy or may be both. If see is lazy she ain't going to listen to you. No use of talking about exercise and diet she will never listen to those or care more. Just try to find out if she likes any activities like dancing, swimming or games like football, basket ball, etc. Any thing which lessen her laziness will work. Once she is active ask for exercising activity together.
