Love watches and always have.Rolex is my favorite and ive worked hard to always have a rolex on my wrist.I like the look, heritage and feel of them. Not into most other watches. Not rich not trying to show off just a watch guy plain and simple. For me it was always better to have buy 5-10k watch than a 50-100k sports car. Also the prices i pay for my rolexes i never really lose money on reselling them as im a serial flipper.

I love watches! The mechanics, the craftsmanship, the quality and the way they tell a lot about a person.

Some like cars, others like boats or guns..whatever floats your boat.

But only a fool would deny the quality of a truly upper end watch.

I've built a decent collect of stainless steel watches but for some reason I am now looking for a good gold watch, something classic and not ostentatious like a AP Royal Oak, but just a subtle Omega or Rolex.  I would prefer not to have a gold band.  Would like a nice gold bezel, back and case but a watch face that is not gold with a good dark brown alligator band with a gold deployment clasp.

I bet you have a car that is just cheap enough to get you to your AARP meetings and shoes good enough to not get your feet dirty and clothes cheap enough to cover your ass and a phone cheap enough to allow you to make calls to your dealer.  So what?

What is it with getbiggers and watches? Every couple of months a similar thread comes up. I just picture a guy wearing an affliction tee shirt with jeans with crazy color basketball sneakers wearing his $2000 Chinese counterfeit Rolex.

Why not a thread on shoes and fine suits?

There are lots of show threads.  Just look up TA's threads on his british hand made shoes.  As for fine suits, well no getbigger can order off the rack.

Not about bragging though.  I own a lot of expensive watches, some are just for my love of complications and mechanics and rarely wear.  Then I have every day watches that I cycle through but the mainstays are my Rolex, Concord and IWC watch.  I have always had an obsession with overly complicated watches.

If I am going to spend a good amount of money on anything, its definitely not going to be a watch. I'd rather spend my money on something else.

Basically, pick your "poison." We all have certain likes and dislikes. For me, Ill take my money and do something else with it (for instance, going to Australia to meet Vince Basile). My cell phone tells me the time. That is good enough.

To each their own.

My dilemma is usually that many of the watches I would buy with passion usually depreciate a lot!
But some of my more "boring" Rolex's have actually gone up in value.

there's a dip in appreciation.  The first few years the value dips slightly because its not new, then there is a major dip in value where the watch is neither vintage or new so stuck in the middle then it becomes vintage and the price jumps way high.

True!
But some brands just go downhill fast..even being fantastic watches.
I have two Girard Perregaux, that even though I bought them second hand have gone down quite a bit.

My Daytonas from the 80's and early 90's hold great value.

Like cars watches can be bought like new after they have depreciated. I have never lost a dime on a higher end watch.

Watch forums have areas where people sell watches and that's where I have purchased most of mine.  Watch Recon shows all the watches for sale on all forums.

My fave blue dial.

I know 2 billionaires, and a lot of multi multi millionaires. I also know people with no money who drive cars they can't afford and buy designer clothes and spend a tonne on presents.

Great watch,subs are awesome.

Subs are awesome if you dive or snorkel.  I don't like the trend of these people that wear big diver's watch with a suit.  Just looks stupid.

Four of the five watches I own are older than the majority of you kids.  I am wearing my Seiko Automatic "diver's watch" right now.

Status  symbol?  Nope.  It's a watch.  I look to it for the time, not to improve my "status" in a pathetic celebrity based society.  But I don't begrudge any MAN a fine watch.  And all of mine work just fine, thank you.

Yup.  My watches are from 40 to 100+ years old now (except one of the pocket watches which I doubt is more than a few  years old).  I just like them and recently had the Seiko fixed.  I need to get my Bulova Automatic repaired but first I have to find it !

A Sub is the only watch I own.

Almost traded it for a Panerai GMT (to replace the Daylight sold a few years ago) but it's a classic. Also, it's appreciated more than the daylight would have.

Daylights seem to hold their value very well.

It's hard to beat Rolexes; in terms of watches that appreciate in value.

you know what the only thing i wear is a signet ring on my small finger left hand with my initials which my wife bought me. Is it worth a lot of money in Gold not much although it´s 18kt. The price you pay is a lot more than the middle man pays.

Panerais are overpriced watches.  Average watch with a high price to make it "exclusive".

The consumer decides what a product is worth.

I'm definitely getting another one next year but have to decide between a GMT or used Daylight. The Daylight face changed in 2005 or 2006 and I don't like the new one.

The Sub is less chunky and better for daily wear.

That kind of defeats the purpose of wearing a watch, doesn't it? Why is it folks spend a lot of money for something that doesn't work any better than it would if it costs less. I recently read where Cadillacs have a lot of transmission issues....seems like the same thing. If it's for the ladies, then I would say if a woman is attracted to you because of your watch, car or expensive clothes than she isn't worth wasting your time on.

valid point.  i coulda put $45000 into a mutual fund ten years ago and had 20-30 % of its value today.

if someone is choosing between paying a mortgage, getting their kids braces, or setting up their retirement vs. buying a watch; yes, they are idiots.

but if someone has all their bills paid, plenty of savings, and buys nice stuff, then more power to them.

and i don't know if you noticed my one post above,  i sold one watch for more than i bought it for 8 years earlier.

Having an investment work out well is always a good thing regardless if it is in art or mutual funds. So, you make a very good point. Like you, my finances are stable to the degree that my income is greater by far than my expenses. I can't take the money with me and I'm old, so might as well spend it on things that make me happy. That's why I've been putting a small fortune into my home lately.

I hope I wasn't interpreted like that.

I just roll my eyes at people who wear 30k in jewellery and clothing yet cannot pay off loans. The same idiots who caused financial collapse (aided by lenders of course) bought houses, cars, jewellery etc beyond their means to show off.

people talk of vehicles being depreciating assets.  impossible. the definition of asset is something that increases in value, or adds to your net worth.

Well... an asset can appreciate or depreciate. My house could go up or down in price, same as a barrel or oil could.

Most vehicles depreciate but... classic car prices have risen something crazy like 4000% in the past decade (Ferrari 250GTO is example) and other, in demand, cars like the Veyron, McLaren P1, or when it came out, the Bentley Continental, rise in value BEFORE they go on sale.

I hang onto my vehicles forever. Currently, I'm driving a 2004 Mazda 6 V-6 wagon. It runs great. It has a little over 140,000 miles on it. My mechanic wants me to sell it to him. Yesterday, I looked at a 2016 VW Golf GT 4 door. It looked hot! I was tempted, really tempted. Unfortunately, if memory serves me right, the excitement of having a new car wears off as fast as it gets a little dirty and needs to go to the car wash. $36,000 is a lot of coin to pay for a few weeks of joy. On the other hand, it could be the last car I ever buy considering how long I keep them.

ya,  some people consider an asset anything that can be converted to cash.  some financial gurus refer to it as something that brings you a return.

like a home that is mortgaged is an asset, but not your asset.  it is an asset to the bank that loans you the money, because they are getting back more money than they put out.

I hope (falsely) people stop viewing homes as an investment here after what happened in 08/09... residential went down 50-60% (commercial 80%) unless you own a few properties or more unencumbered.

If your house went up in value 50% but everyone else's did you can't win unless you sell and move to another country or owned a few houses and settle on one. Like a poker game where everyone's chips rise. Ugh. Sorry i am tired and i see the same mess happening here again. Better go bed.

All black wasn't available at the time and I didn't want something that drew attention. The Sub was a great deal (jeweler was a close friend and Godparent of one of my brats) and has essentially doubled in value, despite a senile mother throwing away its box and papers, LOL!

I enjoyed the Daylight more but the Sub was better for daily wear. Also, I had more tied up in the Daylight and essentially broke even when letting it go.

Currently rockin the AP as my timepiece of choice.

Did you purposely crop the pic extra small to hide the shitty AR on the crystal, lack of sunken bezel screws, and how closely the date is hugging the tach?
