First pic. Was his torso really that long, or is it just that angle or something?
Either way, one of the longest torsos ever.
-
Not shopped. The long torso kept him from winning pro shows.
-
Did he died?

And his chest, delts, quads, back...
He had world class arms and calves. Kind of uneven bodybuilder.

I think that Mike peaked at the 1991 USA's, which he won. He only competed once at the national level. He won that show and turned pro. He beat both Chris Cormier and Flex Wheeler at the 1991 USA's.

True when he turned around it was even more pronounced. His lats attached quite high, which really made his V taper non existent.

I don't think his lats were attached as high as people claim (see picture). I suspect he could never train his back with any intensity. His monstrous arms took all the action, same as Paul Dillet.

He said that his lats attached low, which was one of the reasons why he didn't do so well. I thought it was odd, because Franco's lats attach low, and so DSL Ronnie's and Kai's.
Also, Mike had a kinda sausage arm look---when doing a bicep pose from the front, there was a lack of separation with biceps from the tricep's.
There is some Bro science, that the guys with huge freaky calves, tend to not have ideal physiques.
-
the guy came out of nowhere in 91 weighing a shredded 228 at that show,he was freaky looked bigger than that.he then grew bigger and bigger over his career and as he stated did whatever it took...
-
Calves looked stupid but overall a pretty cool physique and he was one of the muscle-heroes of the 90ies.
-
He also had the sloped shoulder look that Arnold, Dillett, Priest had.

That shot it doesn't look bad at all. There are other contest shots where he is doing a rear lat spread and nothing happens. I tried to find one but had no luck.

Not many shots of Mike from the back or even from the side.
Still, the guy stepped on stage in the most competitive era of bodybuilding.

Yup, I was at the 98 NOC Mike was sliced and diced. If his lats flared more from the rear he woud have been a serious threat to Ronnie and Levrone.

I met Mike in Pittsburgh one year where he was guest posing, out of shape, and completely overweight.............. .FAT actually.
He was real cool.......apologized to the audience for his condition but said he accepted on short notice.
The crowd still loved him and were going wild.
When I told him I was from Massachusettes,we talked for a long time about home.
Real nice guy.

I always liked his physique.......insane arms and nutty calves....great conditioning too.
I `ve talked to a lot of pros and Mike,Jeff Poulin, and Vince Taylor seemed like the coolest.

I saw Mike guest pose at the Southern States one year also. Crowd went nuts also. One of the pros I never got a chance to speak to. Always heard the same thing great guy always had time for the fans.
-
I remember pics of his in Flex magazine's memory lane type expose on him. It showed him when he was younger and a boxer. Dude had some serious arms even back then. And also, let's not forget the time he lit up a supposed peeping Tom schmoe/possible burglar who was looking/lurking around Flex Wheeler's apt (he and Flex lived in the same apt complex).

Vince is the best. Have run in to him more times than I can count over the last 20 years in S.FL. Mike Quinn is another guy I have spoken to and even trained with back in the day. He was always very cool and brutally honest.

Perhaps this is a separate thread (and it's probably been done to death on here), but biggest calves ever..?
-
when this pic was about to be taken someone yelled out 'Hey Mike, we need you over here'.
he replied ' hang on,, this big fugger is gonna snap my arm!!!'
:D

Typing with one hand here.

No, 21s. Nasser had 21s as well (IIRC). And Dillett's seemed bigger than that. I think Fankhouser's maybe bigger.

probably the best calf to ankle ratio. which is much more important.

Thanks, that's kind of what I meant/should have said (off to research Fankhouser..)
edit: Holy SH*T!!!! :o :o
-
i read many times his calves were 22's and his arms 23's. Off season maxes most likely. Dorians calves were monsterous, Pakulski has probably the biggest on the scene right now but Fankhouser takes this comfortably IMO.
-
When Mike and Cormier were on the outs, Chris stated that Matarazzo was nothing "between the armpits and knees". Apparently, these two almost came to blows several times at Gold's. Mike would have punched holes into Chris.
On another note, Mike had a head that was abnormally small. Like a fucking apple.

Mike's calves are much better than Fankhousers, due to the aforementioned calf/ankle ratio. Erik's are (were) freaky but just like two big blobs.

Did he died?
Yes, he did died.
Mr Arms and Calves, got stiffed when he had heart surgery, was begging through magazines for donations. (Joe Weider, of course, could not help him... ::) ::) ::) )
-
Poor fucker got furked up but good. In his final days, his words portrayed a man very much remorseful to have gotten involved in the thong wars.
-
mike had a jaw that looked like it can take a lot of punches.

But could he have taken Pedro in a bathroom brawl?
-
Dude looked great, I read in flex maybe that he would consume several lbs of red meat per day, if so that can't be good for you long term.

Something tells me red meat was not the biggest factor in Mike's heart problems.

I did the Southern States about 5 times......awesome contest.

When I lived in Port St. Lucie,I saw Vince at a lot of contests pushing the Pinnacle products....very nice guy...........always a smile and took a lot of time with his fans.
Unlike Heath and some of the other idiots today who couldn`t hold a candle to Vince.
No humbleness from todays guys and they look like shit.

You know that Chris with his wrestling background wouldn't try and trade shots with Mike...
And Chris was right. Mike was mediocre except for arms and calves.

One of the things I regret in my competitive days never doing that show. I knew so many guys that did that show over the years. What years did you do the S.S.? Probably saw you on stage Wes.
-
During the the summer of 1991, I heard That Cormier was referring to Matarazzo as "Mike Maserati or whatever"
-
yup, the Sergio effect!!

Great look there. McGrath will always be a vascular poor man's Matarazzo in my eyes.
Holy shit he looks wide as hell in that 2nd pic.
-
this issue came out when I was competing in the Canadian nationals for the first time. I thought WTF??? how is that possible?? then Dillet appeared about the same time. insane!!
by the way, he looks like more than calves and arms here :o

I felt that way about Eddie Moyzan. Wide huge arms could never nail his condition though.

I had heard back in the day that Mike was quite the street fighter

I had heard back in the day that Mike was quite the street fighter
I beat up a few roads and avenues, but never advanced to 'street' fighter level ;D ;D
but ya, I heard he had a decent amateur boxing background.
-
Matarazzo was a real schmoe pleaser. Left everything on the stage. HERO.
-
Did he died?
no, he's lifting at the Lord's Gym
-

I think Frank McGrath has a better overall physique than Mike M....and better forearms
-

Yeah in a old musclemag he said that in his late teens that there was a tough Irish dude in the neighborhood. This fella carried a knife.
Mike and is friend had an encounter with him one night on the streets. Mike said that his friend smashed an unopened 40oz liquor bottle over the Irish dude's head.
The bottle smashed. And the guy just dropped.
Mike said that he ran from the scene. He never knew the extent of the damages... But he said that the guy could've been dead.
-
mike vs frank
wrath looks awesome in that third shot, I think thats an earlier pic of him

I think there's no comparison, really.

I know he did some boxing, but did he ever laud that as some kind of evidence that he was a "tough guy"?
Just curious. Things I've heard about the man were all over the map. Mike Mentzer once wrote a piece in MD about the '96 NOC, and he criticized Mazz for showing up looking a lot smaller than usual. Mentzer speculated that Mazz overcompensated from his '93 Olympia appearance, where he looked "bloated beyond belief" according to Mr. Heavy Duty.
Mazz took such offense to the criticism that, one day, he spotted the elder Mike and apparently shouted all across Gold's, challenging Mentzer to a fight in the parking lot.
GRHS and all, but given his additional problems with someone was stoned out and mellow as Cormier, he sounded like a typical, kinda dim-bulbed meathead with a short fuse -- much closer to a Craiggers than a Vince Taylor.
There were also stories about him being a dick going so far as misc.fitness.weights, but I can't speak to the veracity of those. Maybe Rob Schuh (sp?) could, but I rather doubt he's here :/
-

Isn't Matarazzo the guy who never qualified for the Mr. O but Weider would let him Schmoe it up on the Olympia stage anyway?

The crowd loved him
Definitely one of the crowd favorites

Rob Schuh passed away a few years ago.

The guy obviously didn't die and it is a bravado tale. I don't doubt he could have beaten someone with a knife when he had a bottle (seems a semi-fair fight) but to conclude "he could have died I don't know" is fantasy.
-

Mike had some good placings at smaller shows. He placed high at the NOC in 96 (5th) and 98 (third). Back then, top 5 at the NOC qualified a competitor for the Olympia.
He also placed 2nd to Porter Cotrell at a small show in 93 or 94.
