Title: Muslim judge, sworn in on Koran in Brooklyn New York

A routine municipal ceremony has become seeped in controversy after a Brooklyn Civil Court judge was sworn in using a Koran.

Carolyn Walker-Diallo, who was elected last month in Brooklyn’s 7th Municipal District, took her oath of office Thursday using the holy book of Islam as a testament to her Muslim faith.

The swearing-in session went off without a hitch, but after attendees posted video of the ceremony to social media, the backlash became so severe that some of Walker-Diallo’s supporters became concerned for her safety.

GREENE: BROOKLYN'S FIRST MUSLIM JUDGE ISN'T THE END OF THE WORLD

“Sickening,” one Facebook user posted in response to the video. “Is this America or the Middle East.”

“Another piece of s--- Muslim,” another user wrote, “trying to take over this country.”

Walker-Diallo did not return calls for comment.

On her campaign page, she makes reference to her faith.

“All is praise (sic) is indeed due to the Most High!” she said in a post thanking her supporters. “I am humbled that my community has entrusted me with the immense responsibility of ensuring that EVERYONE has notice and a FAIR opportunity to be heard in the halls of justice.”

Since the dawn of the nation, elected officials have been taking oaths of office. Under the U.S. Constitution, a candidate for office must “swear or affirm” an oath.

“Affirming” was for the benefit of people who have a religious objection to invoking God in an oath.

There is no requirement that an officeholder swear on a specific religious text, or any text at all.

Walker-Diallo is not the first Muslim judge to serve in the state.

In 2013, Sheila Abdus-Salaam became the first black woman and first Muslim to sit on the Court of Appeals, the state’s highest judicial body.

Walker-Diallo is also not the first officeholder to be sworn in on the Koran: In 2006, Minnesota Rep. U.S. Keith Ellison did so.

Backlash over Walker-Diallo’s oath of office comes amid Donald Trump’s proposal to close America’s doors to Muslim immigrants in the wake of the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, Calif., carried out by jihadi terrorists.

The debate over Trump’s proposal has stirred up anti-Muslim sentiment across the country.

“It’s really horrific what’s happening,” said Sadyia Khalique, director of operations for the New York chapter of the Council on American–Islamic Relations. “This is a proud moment for her, and to have this much criticism is just really sad. In our society, there is so much hate.”

Khalique pointed out that some of the recent backlash has been aimed at Muslim women.

Last month, two Muslim women, wearing Islamic head scarfs were accosted in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, by a man as one of them pushed a stroller with a baby.

The man threatened to “blow up your temple,” and spit on the women before he walked off.

In the us it is custom to swear on the bible, fairy tale book or not. Many jewish judges they do not demand swearing on the old testament only etc.

At a time when there is an argument if muslims are looking to arrive in the west and get people to live the islamic shit hole lifestyle, this was a wrong move.

The swearing "ritual" is implemented as an effort to get people to be truthful, isn't it?

Well, if this person believes in religion X and they take an oath on religion Y's text, does it have an effect? Would it have an effect if it was religion X text -- the one they adhere to?

PRESUMING, the Koran doesn't advocate lying, then who cares IF it gets a person to be honest?

You sound like you are in the 50's old man.

Even jewish people!!!!! the fact that you insist on the new testament as if that is some sort of tradition that makes anything great, LOLOLOLOL (it has no bearing on ANYTHING) is in fact retarded. If you apply logic to this ridiculous situation, the quran is better for truth adherence in this scenario.

So you don't care if the adherence to truth is maintained (why would a muslim use a bible?), it has no bearing on anything at all, do you honestly think anyone who is going to lie gives a fuck about a bible or a oath?

next thing you know blacks will want to vote.

Reporting is the key here. Sweden is doing great things in terms of rape awareness and support. More victims come forward there. The numbers in the US and many other nations might drop on occasion but it's mostly due to decreased reporting. Not decreased incidences.

That said hopefully there will be protests from atheists demanding no god or religion in the judicial system/government bodies.

Eh, it will never happen, however, you do have a right not to place your hand on a book of worship.

There is no requirement that an officeholder swear on a specific religious text, or any text at all.

Didn't have to scroll far for this point.

Many judges and a lot of witnesses are atheist and swear on a book that means nothing to them. Myself included. That is why there is a law on contempt - the law does not believe the afterlife will punish you for lying so it imprisons you for lying.

Most are completely missing the point.

The political ideologies/laws of Islam (Sharia) are at COMPLETE odds with those of the west/non-Islamic nations. The Qu'ran states NO law, man-made or otherwise, can supersede that of God's (Allah's) law, Sharia. To do so renders one as not submitting to his rules and therefore an infidel ... and is to be put to death.

The Qu'ran also states a Muslim is justified in lying when it's to a non-Muslim in the promotion of Islamic interests.

In Islamic law, democracy is not tolerated. That a proclaimed Muslim presides on the bench of law in a democratic country is the height of contradiction.

It's plain insanity.

Her being allowed to be a judge in the US, and swear upon a holy book that demands its faithful reject most fundamental aspects of a free, secular and democratic country, is absolutely disgusting.

Does no one educate himself anymore, anywhere? Has our PC, tolerance horseshit reached such a state of compression that any concept of reason, logic and thoughtful consideration is immediately trounced in its endless pursuit?

But like I always say, this world is beyond fucked.

It could equally be said that the bible sets natural law above man made laws.

Quote
See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it.  Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today? (Deut. 4:5-8).

Both are pretty archaic texts:

http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/quran/023-violence.htm

http://theonomyresources.blogspot.ie/2011/07/superiority-of-biblical-civil-law-to.html

You also have to remember that the Nuremburg trials relied on "natural laws". That is, a law superior to man made law that should have been obeyed, when convicting and executing Nazi leaders.

It comes down to how fundamentalist the person's beliefs are; it is a bit unfair (discriminatory) to assume a Muslim believes every passage of the Qu'ran and every Christian believes every dictat of the bible. I'm sure the vast majority of both ignore the archaic shit, the loud ones just get the most attention and press.

The No Religious Test Clause of the United States Constitution is found in Article VI, paragraph 3, and states that:

The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.

Seems like this would also apply to not having to place your hand on any religious text.

i'm all for shutting down the borders for 1 year, 2 years, however long it takes to sort out the bad guys vowing to hide as refugees.

but for legal americans, as long as you do your job, and your religious choices don't influence public policy, like Chris Christie says, cool.  The MINUTE you decide a woman should be stoned for this or that, they YES, fire her ass and charge her, do everything you can.

I always thought the law was an inflexible thing.   A random judge cannot just start handing out stonings for jaywalking... don't the judges just follow NY State law all day?

What is the big issue here?

I don't believe Islam, in any form, has a place in any western/non-Muslim nation, in any "official" capacity.

Even if its holy book is merely used as a swearing-in tool for a (pretend) Muslim woman judge.

Your point is noted. However the standards this nation has set for itself are low, people(as individuals or a nation), in general, aren't forward thinking. Most live for the moment, tying to get the most out of whatever they can; as I'm sure thats how its always been for the most part.

Many can say anything and get away with it (as long as its not racist {as least for whites} or LGBT phobic).
When President Obama's pastor, Jeremiah Wright,  made anti America comments (and he had other ridiculous comments, but I'm only referring what he said about about the country)  from the pulpit, at one point proclaiming "God damn America", it obviously made all the news circuits.

When asked to defend his choice of church and the pastors comments President Obama's reply was that he only attended the church he didn't let it influence him (although he was a member of that church and was married by Reverend Wright).

The bottom line being that we don't really hold leaders/politicians/big business/et accountable, I'm assuming its because we dont really hold ourselves accountable.

*The president also said he considered Wright like a family member you don't agree with, which is fine BUT being a member of a social group means that you usually adhere to their beliefs and practices. If someone were a member of the KKK and said they went to the meetings for the social aspect and didn't condone racism, we would/should hold those people accountable. I know the comparison is extreme but I'm using it to illustrate my point.

Please be clear, you rambled off there like a closet Islamic lover. What is your stand of Islam coming to the USA? Be clear, no lectures using cryptic historical tales.

Meltdown schmeltdown, I mean stick to the issue at hand. Over the past few months you spent an incredible amount of time on here defending radical Islam. Has Allah cockbar sent you a thank you note already or you reap the rewards in your afterlife?

Seriously guys, at some point we must call out people who endorse terror using online forums. I am not here to save the world, however, we can all do our small part by denouncing the radicals that keep defending muslim terrorists on various online forums / social media.

Looks like the USA is on the same "politically correct" path as Europe.

One day you'll probably be a centralized nanny-state too where the government is always there to look out for you and knows what's best for you and what is good or bad for you to say.

But like I always say, this world is beyond fucked.

have you read the bible? have you watched the news, how many Christians put the bible before the law(abortion and gay marriage are still a thing)

The bible states NO law, man-made or otherwise, can supersede that of God's, it's the first fucking commandment for petes sake

More and more Muslims have come into a America. Yet we never hear in the news about Muslims being killed. Sniper style or whatever. So what gives? Shouldn't this be happening quite often? Or is it happening and the media refuses to report it? Millions of low to low middle income white American's with tons of guns and not one of them go into a Muslim community and take any out? Just doesn't add up to me... :-\

Christian law is at odds, ALL religions are IMMORAL. They say you are born sick and forced to be well or face eternal torture, how fucked up is that?

Sounds like the ramblings of old pedophiles who cling to power.

People are born physically sick everyday; premature, malnourished and physically deformed babies. Some have it worse being born with cancer, aids, crack addiction, etc.. This is by no fault of their own, they are innocent children, infants incapable of choice or understanding. Decisions of others and genetic factors determine their health. This isn't "fair",its life and it is what it is.

I understand why people don't believe in God, hate Him if they do, despise religion and everything else. Its completely understandable.

The premise of mankind being born "sick" and needing to be well, despite doing nothing than being born,  isn't preposterous because we physically see it everyday with new born children.

I agree religion is unhealthy, among the least of its offensives it creates false beliefs and superstitions at its worst religion is catastrophic. However religion isn't simply limited to "god chasers". Some chase the religion of freedom and democracy or money, power, control, education, 4% body fat in all its thonged glory, and so forth.

Everyone is following something whether they want to admit it or not. If you're a muslim, christian or atheists your view point, beliefs and decisions are undoubtedly influenced.

I wasn't arguing religious beliefs. I was making the point that America doesn't hold itself to any standard, although the argument can be made it never has.

It seems every generation thinks its era was better than the current time, more simple and pure.

For us, those alive in this time, we are learning/growing at an unprecedented and accelerated rate. Throughout the history of mankind life was very simple and basic, travel consisted of some type of horse and buggy, boat or steam engine. The last 150 years of our existence has blown all of mankinds previous advancements out of the water.

Is it fair that the everyday normal people experience luxuries that the richest rulers a century ago could have never dreamt of? Is it fair that.........

Life isn't fair, but it inevitably ends for everyone ever born; christian, muslim or atheist.

You mean, born by chance? not by command? you are confusing two completely different topics, god says we are born with sin cast down from adam and eve, when born we must accept him to be well or face eternal torture. Someone being born sick randomly is what I would expect in an unfair world, ipso facto it is an unfair world. People born sick also don't have conditions placed upon them such as accept this or suffer FOREVER, to compare the two is ludacris, it's a failed analogy.

I understand why people don't believe in God, hate Him if they do, despise religion and everything else. Its completely understandable.

Ok

The premise of mankind being born "sick" and needing to be well, despite doing nothing than being born,  isn't preposterous because we physically see it everyday with new born children.

Nothing alike, again, how is being born with asthma (which you can choose to treat or not, which is random) the same as being born with sin that you must cast out or perish forever, and this sickness is due to decisions other people made, do you still think it's a fair analogy, the only thing you have right is the word sick.

What is an atheist following again? being atheist says NOTHING about someone insofar as being an aunicornist does, don't be silly.

I wasn't arguing religious beliefs. I was making the point that America doesn't hold itself to any standard, although the argument can be made it never has.

Agreed

It seems every generation thinks its era was better than the current time, more simple and pure.

Agreed

Not sure if it's a matter of fairness, I think fairness would indicate that inequality is correctable or present, hence the temporal difference creates a situation that is unfortunate more than anything
Life isn't fair, but it inevitably ends for everyone ever born; christian, muslim or atheist.

Life isn\t fair, I agree.
