Title: R.I.P. Lemmy Kilmister, Motörhead frontman dead at 70
Post by: R.A.M. on December 28, 2015, 05:25:23 PM
I would have never said Lemmy would make it to 70 :o

Lemmy Kilmister, founding member and frontman of Motörhead. has died. He was 70 years old.

News of his death was first reported by radio and TV host Eddie Trunk, who was a longtime friend of Lemmy. Several others have since confirmed the news, including Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne, who wrote on Twitter, “Lost one of my best friends, Lemmy, today. He will be sadly missed. He was a warrior and a legend. I will see you on the other side.”

In a statement posted to Facebook, Motörhead wrote, “There is no easy way to say this… our mighty, noble friend Lemmy passed away today after a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer. He had learnt of the disease on December 26th, and was at home, sitting in front of his favorite video game from the Rainbow which had recently made it’s way down the street, with his family. We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren’t words. We will say more in the coming days, but for now, please… play Motörhead loud.”

In addition to cancer, Lemmy had been suffering from a number of other well-publicized health issues, including hematoma. In 2013, he was fitted with an implantable defibrillator to correct an irregular heartbeat. His health issues had caused the cancelation of multiple Motörhead performances in recent years, though Lemmy remained an active force up until the time of his death.

Ian Fraser “Lemmy” Kilmister was born Staffordshire, England in 1945. Inspired to become a musician after seeing The Beatles perform in concert, Lemmy spent his 20s playing in a variety of bands, and also served as a roadie in the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

In 1972, he was hired to play bass in the UK space rock group Hawkwind, despite having no previous experience on the instrument. He quickly honed his skills, helping shape the band’s sound on critically acclaimed albums such Space Ritual, while also signing lead vocals on the song “Silver Machine”, which peaked at No. 3 on the UK charts.

Lemmy was lead vocalist, bassist, principal songwriter and the founding, and the only constant member of Motörhead since the band’s formation in 1975. To date, Motörhead have released twenty studio albums and achieved 30 million in sales worldwide. Their last record, Bad Magic, was released in August 2015.

Motörhead saw far more commercial success in the UK, though they achieved a cult status in the US. Their ferocious hard-rock style rejuvenated the metal genre in the late 1970s and inspired everyone from Metallica to Guns N’ Roses to Dave Grohl. Albums such as Ace of Spades, Orgasmatron, and Rock N’ Roll were critically lauded, though ironically the band’s only Grammy Award came via a cover of Metallica’s “Whiplash”, which they recorded for a tribute CD.

Lemmy’s outlandish behavior further fueled his icon status. He was fired from Hawkwind after being arrested at the Canadian border for drug possession, yet his appetite for drugs and alcohol remained a constant throughout most of his career. He famously claimed he had drunken a bottle of Jack Daniel’s every day since turning 30, and he was also a proponent of amphetamines. Recently, he joked that he had switched from drinking whiskey to vodka for “health reasons.”

“Apparently I am still indestructible,” he insisted in a 2014 interview with the Guardian, noting that the only thing that will keep him from playing music was death itself. “As long as I can walk the few yards from the back to the front of the stage without a stick,” he said, adding with a laugh, “Or even if I do have to use a stick.”

Lemmy also dabbled in acting with cameos in films such as Airheads, Hardware, and even Foo Fighters’ video for “White Limo”.

I started my Lemmy RIP thread 4 seconds before you but the great man deserves 2 threads at least.

When he couldn't complete his last gig I knew his time was short but I'm still in a state of shock.

This one made me sad. There are certain guys that live so hard that you worry about them, and then they just keep on keeping on, so you figure they'll be here forever. Lemmy was one of those guys.

RIP.

A total legend, huge fan since 1st getting "Iron Fist" back in 1982 as a 15 year old. Of course that made me go out and get all the classics the following week (Ace of Spades, Bomber, No sleep, etc).
Saw them 4 times or so live, and got to  meet Lemmy and drummer Philthy (who also died last month) in the "Channel Club" in Boston, when they came thru on Orgasmatron, back in the mid 80's.

Nothing like the classic line-up (Lemmy, Philthy, Fast Eddie)... Another Perfect Day (When Thin Lizzys "Robbo" came on board) was excellent (and very different) wish he would have hung around a bit longer (Robbo).

Again, nothing like the classic line-up... Philthy's double-bass drumming, off the charts... I love Eddie's guitar style as well...

Motörhead's Ian Fraser 'Lemmy' Kilmister, 1945-2015

Lemmy passed away on December 28 after succumbing to an aggressive form of cancer. He was 70 years old.

As the rock world mourns the loss of the redoubtable frontman, here are some words of wisdom from the one rock legend who was always worth listening to…

"I come from a broken home. I broke it."

"All I learned at school was how to dodge fighting, and how to smoke. And what girls’ tits looked like."

"I like to be loud and shout and run around. Rock ‘n’ roll should be Saturday night every night."

"I like girls. That’s the only reason I’m in the music business – I discovered you could get women to take their clothes off if you had a guitar. And they come off a lot faster if you can play it."

"My ethic is: ‘Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die.’ You can be as careful as you want, but you’re going to die anyway, so why not have fun?"

"I know, intellectually, there was a time when I wasn’t in Motörhead. But I can’t actually remember it."

"I get to travel all over the world, I get to sleep with women of all colours and religious persuasions and I get to play the music I like and make people happier than they were when I arrived. It’s a good way to make a living. You find me a better one."

"I’ve got what’s called a Low Tonal Register, which, loosely translated, means I sound like a gorilla on Valium."

"Motörhead are supposed to make people wonder what’s the next bad thing that will happen to them. Life is about brief periods of bliss, followed by long periods of depression, angst and brutality."
Lemmy
Lemmy at Download, 2013 (Neil Lupin/Redferns)

"It’s not that I take pride in being unfashionable. It’s just that I’ve gotten used to it. I do it rather well now. I’ve been practising for a long time."

"I don’t get hangovers. You have to stop drinking to get a hangover. Why stop?"

"I don’t agree with any politician. I think they’re all c--ts."

“I was Jimi Hendrix’s roadie. My rock’n’roll credentials are fucking impeccable.”

"Integrity is everything to me. I will not die ashamed. I will live on my deathbed knowing that I gave it my best shot, and everything else is meaningless to me."

"If there is a God he hasn’t been paying attention. He should retire and hand over to a younger man, because he’s making a real bollocks of everything."

"I don’t want to be a fucking legend. I want to be a competitor."

"I only care about my band. All the rest of you can go fuck yourselves."

"Most people get to clock out at the end of their day’s work. I’m Lemmy twenty four hours a day, seven days a week."

"I am rock and roll, and rock and roll is me."

He'd sadly been on a slow decline with his health for the past 4 + years. I remember seeing him in an interview around 4 years ago and he said he had to cancel some shows due to him having lost his voice and feeling a little weak and not like his usual self. Apparently that was the first time he had ever cancelled a show up until that point. Unfortunately, things have only gotten worse for Lemmy since then. Diabetes, pacemaker, cancer, etc. If anyone's see recent interviews of Lemmy, he was barely able to conduct the interview, constantly struggling to talk and even keep his eyes from closing. He's been deathly thin as of late and all the while, I was hoping he'd bounce back. He fought until the end, even showing up at his 70th birthday party a mere 2 days before he died. He was a true LEGEND. He spoke his mind, never bowed down to the industry. He was brutally honest, was quick with his comebacks, was a badass and an inspiration until the end. RIP Lemmy. You'll be missed, but never forgotten!

Dude, just shut the fuck up. Lemmy himself would not have given a shit was you thought about him. In his younger days, he might have stabbed you with a knife while laughing at how much of a waste of space you are, but even a sick Lemmy would have given you the middle finger with an evil look and that would have been enough to have made you shit your pants and run crying to your mother.

Motorhead set the path for EVERY hard rock and heavy metal band to follow from 1978 and on...

I'm pretty sure he KNEW well before then that he had cancer. He'd lost A LOT of weight and could barely talk and stand for quite a while now. He must have known something was seriously wrong, but didn't want to officially get the verdict until the very end, at which point he probably just stopped fighting and gave in to the sickness that was eating away at his body. Sad, but he was a true lion.

His lived his life (and died) on his own terms, true legend...

So, I just found out that he had multiple tumours on his brain and neck and this is what someone very close to him said today: "He had to hate the way he was feeling, but he had 2 to 6 months to live according to his doctor. They brought him a morphine kit. He nodded off at the Rainbow and never woke up again."

Looks like Lemmy overdosed on the morphine he was self-administering to himself because the pain had gotten to bad. His speech had become slurred and he needed a cane to walk to the bathroom. So yes, it was Lemmy who ended it, but his end was coming anyway. Sad.

That's what I figured, the whole got cancer then died the next day didn't make any sense and the wording of the story was a bit coy about actual cause of death.

He died at home. Not the Rainbow. The owner of the Rainbow was there at his condo. The morphine kit was purchased in prep for the anticipated pain, meaning it probably hadn't been touched. Slurred speech etc is almost assuredly a result of the brain tumors.

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/lemmys-last-days-how-metal-legend-celebrated-70th-stared-down-cancer-20151229?page=3

Plans were to put out a press release after informing close friends and family. Nurses were hired to be at his condo in shifts. A morphine kit arrived in preparation of coming pain. A favorite video-game console at the Rainbow Bar & Grill on the Strip that Lemmy loved to play at the corner of the bar was brought over.

Singerman and others began calling friends and family. Lemmy told his partners in Motörhead on Sunday night, and travel plans were being made for them to visit immediately.

"Here's the shocker for me and everyone else: He's been to a thousand doctors and hospitals throughout the world, but nobody caught this," says Singerman. "To be told you have terminal cancer with all the blood tests he's taken in his life and everything else? It's very hard to grasp that. It's not like he had a fucking chance here. This was outright: 'You got no more than six months.'"

A doctor visited early Monday. Ozzy Osbourne would be coming by that day or the next. Lemmy spent hours on the video-game console, as Rainbow owner Mikael Maglieri paid a visit. Then Lemmy nodded off and never woke up again.

I picture you on your southern plantation, in front of your Macbook, with a tiny hard on giggling at how clever you think you are on getbig...

You should post the same side chest pose picture that you always do. Maybe you will get the praise you so desperately need

Would you say that he was a "beast"?

Not doubting you, just want to know more.

He had a girlfriend once who got hooked very quickly on heroin and died from an overdose. She was 19. He later described her as the love of his life.

For years he advocated harsher approaches to hard drugs, until eventually he reached different conclusions. He was invited to the Welsh assembly sometime in the 90s and stunned everyone by saying that heroin should be legalised.

Well, he wasn't a genius and certainly did not write Beethoven's Ninth.  Oh well.

He was actually pretty damn close - extremely high IQ. And certainly no Ninth, but Beethoven never wrote "Ace of Spades," either. Different brand of genius is all. No way Vienna could've handled the unbridled brilliance and savagery of 'Inferno,' Abeles. Would've given the deaf fuck an earache.

Side note: Always assumed that the Rainbow video machine was a trivia game. Everyone who knew Lemmy said he was smart/informed as hell.

Heard he switched to vodka and OJ, and the morphine thing, too, is questionable.

Word is the Rainbow owner delivered his favorite video game - that part's confirmed - but they'd hired a 24-hour hospice nurse, and the morphine GEAR had arrived for the pump or whatnot, BUT the drug itself hadn't yet been delivered. They say he was playing his game, and without his expected meds, he simply dozed off into eternity.

A quick, painless exit, it seems.

This needs to happen  ;D!!!

http://www.vocativ.com/news/267997/lemmy-heavy-metal-periodic-table/

If heavy metal fans get their way, a tribute to Lemmy of Motörhead could be hanging in grade school science classrooms across the world.

This week the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry verified the existence of four new elements, but before these scientific discoveries can officially make it onto the periodic table, they have to be named. A British music lover has a name suggestion for at least one of those elements: Lemmium.

“For me and an awful lot of people, Lemmy is the essence of rock, and our dreams as teenagers of living our lives as we please and just saying ‘fuck it,'” John Write told Vocativ, explaining why he started a petition on Change.org to name one of the new elements after his idol Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister. Write created the petition on Monday and it currently has over 50,000 signatures.

“I had no idea how quickly the idea would take off, but part of me isn’t that surprised,” Write said. “He was a hero to many, [and] also managed to transcend his genre.”

The petition is aimed at Jan Reedijk, president of the Inorganic Chemistry Division of IUPAC. The organization confirmed to Vocativ that they are aware of the movement and that this is the first time they have encountered an online petition. “This is a rather new development, to see a petition such as that. But we have seen [paper] petitions in the past,” Lynn Soby executive director of the IUPAC told Vocativ.

More The Periodic Table Has New Elements, But You Can’t See Them
Reedijk does chair the commission responsible for naming the new elements, but Soby said he has virtually nothing do to with choosing the names. That honor goes to the laboratories in Japan, Russia and the United States that discovered the elements. “The IUPAC will not get involved in that petition. The laboratories have the right of the discovery and they’re the ones that will propose the name. So the petition would have to go to the laboratories,” Soby said

The naming of elements is a process that has been in development since 1782 when French chemist Louis-Bernard Guyton de Morveau wrote the first guide for chemical nomenclature to “help the intelligence and relieve the memory.” The IUPAC was developed in 1919 to officially oversee the naming of elements and other chemical standards. In 1947, the organization decided laboratories that discovered new elements would come up with the official names. That rule worked until the 1960s, when scientists in the U.S., Germany and the Soviet Union all made claims on discovering elements 104-109 at the same time. The ensuing controversy, known within the science community as The Transfermium Wars lasted until 1997. The IUPAC has since refined this process to make sure the organization remains neutral and the process is secure and confidential so no one gets involved in another three-decade dispute.

Soby said once the labs submit a name suggestion, IUPAC subcommittees will review and evaluate the names to make sure they fit a set of guidelines, which is currently in the process of being updated.

One rule states that new elements should be named after a mythological character, astrological body, mineral, property of the element, place, or a scientist. Motörhead fans might tell you that Lenny’s status as a legendary rock demigod who lived hard and cheated death for half a century places him firmly in the category of a mythological character. But just to be safe, John Wright registered a star named Lemmy so that the new element could technically be named after an astrological body.
