PADILLA, his later look was pretty impressive, even if his midsection thickened up a bit. Could have probably gone longer, he seemed to have more gas in the tank... WBF thing prolly didn't help.
-
Uncrop his photos and see the truth.
There is no kigtropin in his blood.
-
Starting in 1988 all the pro`s trained at my gym when they came to nottingham for the english grand prix, and i saw most of them train. And no-one,and i mean NO-ONE impressed me more than Danny.Every single muscle was perfect, and if he`d have been 5"10 he`d have won many olympias.
-
The Giant Killer...great Bodybuilder
-
He said he ate 80 grams of protein a day.
-
dude had amazing proportions and shape and then those calves!
-
Fucking sick side chest..
-
He should've won the '81 Olympia. He was a miniaturized Arnold.

Looks carved out of granite there. :o

Very well put together fello!

Even for his height, dude was narrow. Good allround though.

Are you an imbecile, a troll or both?

Yes, his back should have been wider. Even at 5'2".

Wish I was that narrow....
-
I was talking about his back. Should have been clearer.
-
he looked on a par with Mike Mentzer at that point, phenomenal and Mentzer was the top man.
-
ridiculous
-
too bad the judges like tall dudes as much as naked dudes, no homo
-
him and mike mentzer were good friends to, i know danny has never said anything bad about mike in any interviews.

That's some one I would of liked to have seen in person.
Always struck me it was his lack of height that kept the big
Prize away from him.
What height was he around 5ft2ish & what would he of weighed 180/90lbs.??

Should have won the Olympia in 81. Awesome bodybuilder.
Anyone know what he's doing these days?
-
One of the very best short bodybuilders ever. Better than Franco better than Preist.

hey galain i am not sure what he is doing now , but i kid you not , one time while flying back from the phillipines the guy i sat next to
we ended up talking bodybuilding turns out , padilla was his personal trainer, in new york. i am not sure if he is still personal training
this was about 6 years ago
-
WBF helped all of those guys for a couple of years, finally made some big money.
-
Padilla was great.
As he got bigger he started to resemble Eduardo Kawak, who was a fantastic bodybuilder the Weiders fucked over because he came from another federation
-
Wider than (and owning) "one leg, gyno nipple" Franco...

One of the judges at that Olympia was from Italy, his name was also Franco Columbu. I wonder who he put in first.
-
In Franco's defense, his conditioning was good, and his ripped striated chest was awesome.
Still didn't deserve the win. I say Platz did, with Padilla right behind.
-
Danny
-
Great back. Dense.
-
Danny
Momo was pretty amazing himself
-
Phenomenal side chest pose!
I wouldn't mind this look (on the left), but possibly 50 lbs lighter.

Close... His name was Franco Fassi and was Columbu's good friend from his home town...

Yeah, only about 5"2 and 180 but every single bodypart was perfect.I was backstage when he was pumping up at the concert hall and his arms looked massive, simply because of his perfect proportions and muscle insertions.I`d look at Strydom and think well he looks big but somethings missing, but Danny was flawless.

No way he was better then either at their respective lpeaks

i think danny had open heart surgery to not sure, though, im sure someone on here can confirm this

Bypass surgery. He talked about in an interview in Ironman. He's not the only big star of that era to have it. The others hide it and don't talk about it. I heard about several. I hope it never happens to me. Two guys I know had it and it's major surgery that took one guy 6 months before he felt like himself again.

Boyer had bypass surgery as well. Arnie had heart valve surgery (genetic condition of course) ::)
-
Powerful looking little fella. And he was miles better than Franco, ever.
-
If he had open heart that picture Is either shopped or he is an incredible healer. I guess I can imagine I see a big verticle scar where he is white over his sternum but not sure.
-
Padilla had the Viator look......don't see many of those around.
-
Great physique!!
Met him in Rochester a few times.......nice guy and lives and breathes bodybuilding.
-
.
-
Someone mentioned picture cropping - if you can crop a picture and then the guy looks 6ft tall he's built right - some guys still look short even when shot alone. I think it's that their limbs need to be in proportion to avoid that dwarf-like impression - i.e. Padilla, Pastel, Benaziza being examples of proportionate limbs.
Danny's legs look ripped too - does anyone know if he did cardio?
Danny also had a great death-mask 8)

Danny for the 1980 Olympia rode a stationary bike for so long that everyone told him it was too much. One guy told him that when he was finished and he took off his shirt and the guy had nothing to say.
-
This was a great interview with Danny I watched last year that someone had posted here, Danny has a great sense of humour about the whole thing
-
-
Saw Danny at his peak in Rochester, NY along with Pete Grymkowski as guest posers at a local bodybuilding show. Most impressive bodybuilder I have ever seen proportions wise. Danny walked down the aisle about 2 feet from me after he posed. You couldn't put another ounce of muscle on his frame. Wide isn't the right word. He was imposing even at 5'2".
I wonder if a lot of commenters on this site have actually seen any of these top guys in person. I mean the ones that comment negatively. Guys like Padilla are the ultimate in muscle development. You can't get any better than them.
-
Danny's physique has always impressed the hell out of me. Crazy. Guys today aren't even in the same ballpark.
Never heard a bad word about Padilla, either. I think I remember Bob Kennedy telling me he ran a family store. I could be wrong.
A hard worker who didn't get the accolades he deserves.
As far as any comparison to Franco, there is none. Danny blows Sardinian Sausage away. Period.
Politics. ::)

5 weeks of 2 hard boiled eggs and a chicken salad and thats the result
-
Met Danny briefly once a very nice guy. I wouldn't have argued if Danny beat Yates and Momo that night. I tad sharper and he could have pushed Haney that year.
-
Danny was very impressive and cool guy.

Also saw him guest pose around that time in South Florida. Huge and proportionate, probably didn't weigh 200lbs, looked massive.
-
I saw him in the streets of Manhattan. They got him listed as 5'2". He looked shorter than that.

Some say he was only 5'1". The funny thing is Franco gets listed as 5'5", but was barely taller than Danny in 1981. Franco was at best 5'3".
-
Padilla was way better than Franco ever was... no comparison.
-
I have what I think is a great story when I was a kid training at Bill Pearls gym and Danny was secretly spying on Mohammed Makkawy when I was training with him.
-
Danny was near flawless. Should have won in '81 with Platz a close second. When you see pics of Danny standing by himself it was hard to judge his heigut due to his perfect proportions. If he was six inches taller he would have been unbeatable.

that would make him 5ft 7, still not tall enough...
-
Roger Schwab, the former head judge of the IFBB whom I worked for, said Danny Padilla was the most complete bodybuilder he ever saw.

Okay, 9 inches... :)
-
Danny is great, such a cool, chilled out guy.
Was screwed over so many times. I saw him at the British Grand Prix and he was awesome. Had given up dieting after his Olympia and early Grand Prix results and was just there to have fun.

Even at 5'6 he probably would have had a chance.

Then he wouldn't have been the Giant Killer. ;)

The WBF thing probably put more money in his bank account than he ever made in his life.
-
being a tall dude, i am kinda into my own type
-

Yes.
From 1998-2001.
-
Great bodybuilder

I competed in that contest... the Empire State.
-

Yes.
-
From what I hear he did most of exercises with five sets of twelve reps with the same weight. I read he tried the low set and heavy weight route and he said he got better results with volume.

Yes, that's true. Danny had no weaknesses. Perfection.
-

That he was. He possessed a superb physique that was a smaller version of Arnold but perhaps even more balanced. He was not just robbed by the IFBB and the Weiders, but royally fucked over.

I trained with him for 5 weeks in 1977 and also interviewed him in Iron Man around 2000 and yes almost everything was 5 sets of 12 with the same weight. The only exception was with his warm-ups for squats, and Bench. Occasionally he'd work in a heavier rep range for a month or two doing 5 sets of 8 instead. Depending on if it was off-season or he was getting ready for a contest, he'd do 2 exercises per body part (off-season) and as contest time grew closer, he'd add a 3rd and then a 4th exercise.

Well if you take him at his word he claims a 405 incline press in that video on the prior page (around the 4:20 point in the video)
Seems like total bullshit to me

He's got great levers for lifting. I've stood next to him. He's built like a tank. Unreal thickness.
-

Perhaps but I'm still not buying him inclining 405
-
Was he strong?
Yes for his weight but he rarely trained heavy. Keep in mind that on 5 sets of 12 the rest was only long enouph for his training partner to do his set. Here is a video of a shoulder and bicep workout.
-
Inclining 405 at his size does seem like bullshit. Maybe it was a Jimmy Pellechia lift with 3 spotters deadlifting the weight.
-
How much could Franco incline?
-
Padilla...
-
Here's a 154 pound guy doing a rep on a flat bench at 410. Yet a full gassed Danny Padilla couldn't do the same on the incline? This board really has gone to shit. Doesn't anybody but a handful of guys actually lift, lol?
And here is more on the guy who did it: https://gravitus.com/blog/ufpwrlifter-path-to-410lb-bench-press/

He did most certainly poses a very balanced & Great Physique.
Maybe his short stature & not being very “Big / Heavy” went against him.
On a physical level he really had no weak body parts.

True to some extent - I Powerlifted & competed at a high level
I benched 180kg at 75kg in strict competition.
That didn’t give me big full muscles - I was strong & muscular yes Not a bodybuilder physique though.
Plenty of very large muscular men I could easily out lift.
When I turned to bodybuilding I still lifted relatively heavy - Only had to train in a completely
Different style to powerlifting to grow larger muscle size.
Im not saying Danny couldn’t bench 400+ only what difference does it make if he could
or Couldn’t. He was a Bodybuilder & Had a Great Physique.

I agree - being strong doesn't necessarily track with voluminous muscles. We have sarcoplasmic hypertrophy coming into play.
But Danny said he was a powerlifter, much like Franco Columbu was. So it's much more believable that he retained a lot of power.
-
Having a big bench I bet is his one trick he can do. What can he power clean. Bet he couldn't do 225lbs.

He used to train the olympic lifts as a teenager.
