I believe the media started calling them hoverboards. It seem that they got popular after Lexus unveiled their actual Hoverboard.

A lot of people's houses (well about 7) have burned down because of shitty chargers from knock offs. If my son asked for one for Christmas I would have disowned him there and then. Thankfully, he knows they are total shit.
