The thread concerning how to get bodybuilding back on ESPN got me thinking.  There is something aesthetically beautiful to me about muscle.  Visually amazing and captivating but it is very hard to explain or put into words how something has all those qualities normally associated with muscle, brutal, sick, grainy, veiny, shredded, massive and yet at the same time be beautiful.

Then someone went and posted this pic of Bertil Fox (?)  I cannot explain what it is about this that I find beautiful, but something like what is being conveyed by this pic is the reason I got bit by the iron bug.  Drugs or not, that's fucking awesome and in some weird aesthetic beautiful to me.

Thanks for correcting me that this wasn't Bertil Fox and I'm not down with all the disgusting stuff, I'm just saying look at the Arnold pic, or even Jean Paul Guillaime something about the muscle has a captivating aspect to it on an evolutionary biological level.  It is beautiful to us the same way a straight line horizon is (allowing to scan easily for predators).  The strength/virility aspect translates into a certain innate beauty at a subconscious level.  This is also why the current contest bodybuilding seems to get worse and worse, it seems too artificial and high maintenance, lacking that strength virility.  Somewhere a line was crossed. At least for me anyway.
